…And there was some rice-storing scandal too? I need of an unbiased history lesson as to why people really hated him and if he was (or potentially wasn’t) truly and bad person, or somewhere in between. I just want to educate myself on current affairs and researching the 2012 coup, this came to interest. Information about this is scarce on the English-speaking side of the internet, apart from a few vice articles. Thanks in advance :))

[M] Sorry for the flurry of posts incoming, they were meant to be spread out over a few days but I was busy during the start of the season.
The former prime minister and leading opposition figure Thaksin Shinawatra has passed away naturally today while living in exile. The 72 year old has been one of the most influential figures in Thailand the past decades and been a constant thorn in the side of the Military Supported Governments through the years. However he himself has his fair share of controversies regarding his own accumulated wealth and allegations of administrative corruption, claims which Thaksin denied fervently as nothing but smears. But what the truth in these matters are matters very little now.
He is survived by a large family but none of them except his younger sister who is also in exile, seem very interested in carrying on his political legacy. They have successfully petitioned the government to allow him to be buried in his homeland, but only a small private ceremony.
With it's figurehead gone, many wonder what direction the Pheu Thai party will take now and whether they will hold onto their mantle as the leading opposition party.
