A list of puns related to "Submediant"
The submediant shift involves using a pivot note to move from one key to another that is four flats to the left on the circle of fifths. In this music composition lesson you'll learn a technique that will add colour to your harmony and that will offer a way to modulate in one move to a key that is four flats away on the circle of fifths. For example, the note C belongs to the tonic chord of C major but by repeating the note as the middle note of a tonic chord in Ab major, a moment of colour can be created in C major or a modulation to the flattened submediant key can be instantly achieved. A really useful device for composers and arrangers.

I'm a huge fan of Parappa the Rapper and one of my favorite songs is hair scare from the second game but I've always wondered what the function of the first chord is. Song is in G major: E Mm7 G Maj C Maj G Maj
I understand the tonic to sub dominant relationship of the latter chords but I'm stumped as to what the E is actually acting as. Anyone understand?
These go: Tonic, Supertonic, Mediant, Subdominant, Dominant, Submediant, Leading Note/Subtonic, Tonic.
Okay, I'm sure everyone knows that. These are conventions that have been in place for over a century, if not longer. However, and I hope you'll pardon my French... what the fuck?
Tonic, Supertonic, sure, no issues. But then Mediant? The middle? How is the 3rd of 7/8 notes considered the middle? Then come Subdominant, and Dominant, which is all peachy keen. After which plops the SUBmediant?! So we have the Subtonic and Subdominant immediately preceding Tonics and Dominants. However, the Submediant comes * *puts on glasses* * three positions after the mediant?!?!
You see what I'm saying? How does this ordination make sense? Does it somehow make sense? If so, can one of you brilliant people please explain it to my feeble mind. Otherwise, if the realization of this injustice has your feathers similarly ruffled, allow me to propose a new, logically concordant order of scale degrees:
Tonic-Supertonic-Submediant-Mediant-Dominant-Superdominant-Leading Note/Subtonic-Tonic.
There. Now it's perfect, and my sleep deprived ass can rest easy knowing I've righted a great wrong in this world.
I don't want to step on anybody's toes here, but the amount of non-dad jokes here in this subreddit really annoys me. First of all, dad jokes CAN be NSFW, it clearly says so in the sub rules. Secondly, it doesn't automatically make it a dad joke if it's from a conversation between you and your child. Most importantly, the jokes that your CHILDREN tell YOU are not dad jokes. The point of a dad joke is that it's so cheesy only a dad who's trying to be funny would make such a joke. That's it. They are stupid plays on words, lame puns and so on. There has to be a clever pun or wordplay for it to be considered a dad joke.
Again, to all the fellow dads, I apologise if I'm sounding too harsh. But I just needed to get it off my chest.
The nurse asked the rabbit, βwhat is your blood type?β
βI am probably a type Oβ said the rabbit.
The doctor says it terminal.
Alot of great jokes get posted here! However just because you have a joke, doesn't mean it's a dad joke.
THIS IS NOT ABOUT NSFW, THIS IS ABOUT LONG JOKES, BLONDE JOKES, SEXUAL JOKES, KNOCK KNOCK JOKES, POLITICAL JOKES, ETC BEING POSTED IN A DAD JOKE SUB
Try telling these sexual jokes that get posted here, to your kid and see how your spouse likes it.. if that goes well, Try telling one of your friends kid about your sex life being like Coca cola, first it was normal, than light and now zero , and see if the parents are OK with you telling their kid the "dad joke"
I'm not even referencing the NSFW, I'm saying Dad jokes are corny, and sometimes painful, not sexual
So check out r/jokes for all types of jokes
r/unclejokes for dirty jokes
r/3amjokes for real weird and alot of OC
r/cleandadjokes If your really sick of seeing not dad jokes in r/dadjokes
Punchline !
Edit: this is not a post about NSFW , This is about jokes, knock knock jokes, blonde jokes, political jokes etc being posted in a dad joke sub
Edit 2: don't touch the thermostat

We told her she can lean on us for support. Although, we are going to have to change her driver's license, her height is going down by a foot. I don't want to go too far out on a limb here but it better not be a hack job.
Ants donβt even have the concept fathers, let alone a good dad joke. Keep r/ants out of my r/dadjokes.
But no, seriously. I understand rule 7 is great to have intelligent discussion, but sometimes it feels like 1 in 10 posts here is someone getting upset about the jokes on this sub. Let the mods deal with it, they regulate the sub.

It really does, I swear!
Happy holidays! Noob here. I spontaneously decided to get into music a year after purchasing FL Studio and have been cramming everything down music theory related the past 4 days straight through for the holidays so, please bear with me if I sound confusing. I understand that Diatonic functions work in roman numerals and vary in half and whole step arrangements whether they are a minor or major chord. I also understand that each roman numeral has its own given name (tonic, mediant, dominant, etc.) and that certain ones can help lead or give resolution to another chord for example however, I am not sure if I understand the rules behind this. Below is a link to another reddit post that I was reading and found myself a bit confused.
What is the function of the submediant? : musictheory (reddit.com)
Top comment states " It can prolong the tonic, serve as a pre-dominant, serve as a pre-pre-dominant, act as a deceptive resolution, and generally be an available alternate tonal center for modulation." for the submediant. Seems pretty straight forward but I am struggling to understand how this applies if for example I choose to start on V (Dominant). Could I use chord progressions and use a submediant after a V or do my chord progressions have to follow an order of rules to allow my progression build up in a way that sounds pleasing? I'm not sure if I am allowed to use the roman numerals in a chord progression in any order that may interest me.
Additionally, if this different question can be answered about modes that would be all the more helpful. I understand that if I chose to play C Ionian and decided to switch to Dorian all I am doing is rotating the tonic chords over. Assuming I choose to substitute a chord from C Ionian with C Dorian, can only specific numerals be substituted or can any roman numeral like VI from Ionian be substituted with VI from Dorian? If there is a chart, link, or video I could use to dive deeper into this I would forever be grateful. I have been using Signal Music Studios, Michael New, and Andrew Huang for YouTube videos as I have found them to be the most informative and helpful. If anyone has any other channels or website besides musictheory.net for knowledge I would once again appreciate it. :)

Looking at a standard Coltrane changes, if we take the first chord as a I, the cycle looks like this: I, bIII, bVI, VII, III, V, back to I. Obviously what makes the progression unique is the 'three-keys-at-once' thing going on. But putting that aside, I-bIII-bVI-VII-III-V isn't really that diatonic. Going by functions and proximate harmony, that becomes:
Tonic, βmediant, βsubmediant, leading note or subtonic, βmediant, dominant.
Would a chord sequence of T, M, sM, LN/sT, M, D generally work as a rule of thumb for 'diatonic' Coltrane changes? Of course some scales won't offer the same minor 3rd-then-perfect 4th pattern like the normal changes do, but generally I think I've got it. Any thoughts?
Put it on my bill

Edit: Thank you guys for the awards, they're much nicer than the cardboard sleeve I've been using and reassures me that my jokes aren't stale
Edit 2: I have already been made aware that Men In Black 3 has told a version of this joke before. If the joke is not new to you, please enjoy any of the single origin puns in the comments
