Edit: Current Status: Network is Moving!!! (Last update 3:15 PM PST)
Harmony staking portal and harmony bridge are in the process of being updated to account for increased gas fees.
See hour by hour updates below. Check networks status live here: monitor.hmny.io/status
Why are your transactions stalling? Why is your balance not showing? Why can't you use any dApps? Why is your transaction from Binance/Kucoin not showing up?
Short Answer: The network has halted.
At the time of writing this update, shard 0 has halted for nearly 2 hours now. Official communication will be released from Harmony core at the time of resolution of this issue, in the mean time I will do my best to provide some insight to what is happening.
The network has suffered from multiple block propagation issues over the last 30 hours due to heavy spam traffic. An internal leader node of the Harmony blockchain became overwhelmed by the spam traffic following a network upgrade and ended up forking the chain which then resulted in a consensus not being able to be met and the network halting. Validators have been cooperating with the core team to resolve these propagations when they occur.
The team has been working around the clock since these network propagations started in an attempt to identify the underlying issues and create a solution to resolve it. Currently there is not a pending solution that has been communicated to Validators thus far. We currently are awaiting for the internal leader nodes to get caught up, while Harmony continues to look for solutions. We will do our best to put out updates as we receive them.
Given that the origin of this issue was caused due to the spam attacks, the upcoming change to to increase minimum gas should help prevent this moving forward and greatly improve overall performance.

We feel it's important to keep the community informed with communication and transparency, while accepting constructive feedback and listening to your concerns. The on-going RPC issues have our attention, and we will not be treating this lightly. Improvements to the infrastructure are underway and with more to come. Some of the upcoming work includes:
a. RPC Change #1 (completed)
Problematic RPC nodes were redirected to functional regions, restarted, confirmed as caught up, then placed back into service This is a workaround. Items below are long-term solutions.
b. Arbitrage Bot Transactions & Gas Price (upcoming)
Nodes are receiving an urgent update to increase recommended gas price from 10 gwei to 30 gwei and minimum gas price from 1 gwei to 30 gwei. The fee increase will combat the arbitrage bots spamming the network with transactions.
^(**[Update Jan 3]) When: We want this to be as smooth of a transition as possible for everyone in our ecosystem. Dates will be published soon, giving developers an opportunity to update their apps if necessary before anything is modified.
c. RPC Change #2 | Rate Limiting (monitoring)
RPCs used specifically for staking data are now rate limited. These requests are very taxing, and could drag down all RPC nodes on the network, causing them to fall out-of-sync. We noticed a correlation between the two some hours ago.
^(**[Update Jan 3]) When: Rate limits are being tested on a few RPC nodes with no issues. Roll out is is postponed as our focus is on (d) below.
**^([Update Jan 5]) We have two RPC methods bogging down the nodes with one method processing 5,000 queries in 5 minutes and another processing 2.5k queries in 5 minutes. We're adding rate limiters to those RPCs and will be pushing it tonight.
Upcoming fix: https://github.com/harmony-one/harmony/pull/3971
**^([Update Jan 6]) The rate limiting above has been applied to most RPC regions and we're seeing a lower number of requests processed. Next, we will be rate limiting another RPC which appears to be excessively used and resulting in poor node performance, doEVMcall. It's being merged into PR #3971 along with above limiters.
**^([Update Jan 7]) Rate limiting

Hello!
Most of us are probably well informed of the minimum gas raised to 30 GWEI and overall gas raising to combat the ongoing attacks/spams to Harmony Network.
Maybe some of you know, that Daniel Pagan - Harmony Core Team member and communicator to the Reddit/Telegram communities stated that GAS fees will be lowered back to the previous values once the Harmony Network gets control of the situation.
Here is my problem with that. If higher GAS fees keep away the spam, then lowering them will be very hard in the future, even if by then Harmony has control of the network traffic at potential future volumes, lowering GAS fees to todays volumes could potentially bring back dramatic congestion issues even if Harmony by then βbelievesβ it can handle the volumes. Low transaction fees are a key principle and selling point of Harmony, we are applying a bandaid to a problem right now. I have a feeling this wonΒ΄t be the end of volume increase and possible FEE RAISE. At this point everything needs to be done to keep transaction fees at YESTERDAYS levels and end this βsymptom treatingβ and fix the problem at root level. If you give your finger to the devil, it will take your hand. This easy fix might just be too easy to repeat.
We need a real solution to the root problem which is the lack of servers to handle the traffic. Not a bandaid that we will constantly have to reapply to survive, ultimately digging our own grave. I donΒ΄t think any of you want to wake up one day and see transaction fees comparable to Avalanche or about 0.12$ per tx. This can happen if Network fees are being constantly raised to βcombatβ bot transactions and ONE token price jumps to dollars or tens of dollars, should mass adoption happen.
I hope Harmony will up their hardware and LOWER fees back to historical lows like they stated, otherwise they are paving the way for future candidates to lead the scene.
We donΒ΄t want to lose our main triumph, think about it.
I hope this makes to Harmony Core Team and that they are still two feet on the ground and fees will be back to nomal ASAP. This can not become the standard.

While the West and East coasts have immense population density (for the US), most of the entire land mass is vacant. Often the largest city is only a few hundred thousand for many hundreds of miles. China is the most populous country on earth. The train stops ever 60 km or so (about 20 minutes) and passes by several tens of millions of people every hour or so all down the east coast and well into the interior. Japan has some of the highest population density in the world. Europe has the same rough land area of the US, but more than twice the population. These places are well suited for a large fast train network. India would also be well suited for a fast train network.
The US, on the other hand, is sparsely populated from the West coast all the way to the East coast. Who would ride the train? Where would it stop? Its just not a good idea for the country. Many states have a lower population than a tier 3 city in china (nowhere ville), of which there are many hundreds per state. In china, you pass by the entire population of Montana ever 15 minutes in a fast train, or less. In America, there wouldn't even be a place for the train to stop for hundreds of miles. You would end up having a day trip just to get to the train.
I love fast trains. I dont think the US has the population density for them.

Hi,
I would like to understand this statement better:
"Ethereum's scaling bottleneck is not the time it takes to reach consensus but cost of verifying the chain. If the state of the network grows too fast, the chain becomes too expensive to verify."
Could someone give it a go in ELI5 terms? Why does ETH become too expensive to verify if the network state grows too fast?
Iβm graduating in the Spring and looking to move to the DC area for marketing/advertising. From what Iβve seen on LinkedIn, most UCF alumni are in Orlando or Florida and those that are in the DC area are there for politics. Have any of you guys had luck networking out of state, and how did you do it?
