Wow, does that sound bad. Let me reiterate.
The star chamber of an M-4 or M-16 rifle is where the real action happens. It is where bolt of the rifle meets the barrel of the gun, with the bolt being "star shaped" and the receiving part of the barrel being referred to as the "star chamber". The "star chamber" receives rifle cartridges which are pushed into place by the "star shaped" bolt.
Apparently, being that close to the action, it gets dirty. Also, due to the machining and shaping of the "star chamber" it is notorious for holding forgotten grime.
Enter me, a newly promoted E-4 who has spent the last 45 minutes meticulously cleaning every single part of my rifle...... except the star chamber.
During this work session, me and my fellow mafia friends had double and triple checked each others work, making sure that our weapons would pass inspection so we could be done with these damn things. It seemed like nothing was more anxious than weapons turn in, and nothing more relieving than no longer having to carry it everywhere. I knew guys who would wrap their weapon in a plastic garbage bag when it was issued and carry it that way, then turn in their weapon at the end of the weekend with minimal cleaning.
I spent extra time with q-tips and pipe cleaners getting all the extra springs in the trigger mechanism and personally didn't stop until my rags no longer turned color when I wiped my rifle down. I then wiped it dry, the theory being that if you put it away wet with oil, the oil would pull more carbon out of the weapon while it sat stored away, and would be oily and dirty again when you received it.
After watching many people get loudly turned back by the fire-haired E-4 (we'll call her Fire) for bringing back dirty weapons, I came up loud and proud.
"Go ahead!" I announce loudly, drawing everyone's attention. "There's no way you'll find anything in there, Fire. Check wherever you want, I want to see it!"
"I bet I can find dirt in the first spot I put my finger," she retorts.
"Sure, lets see it!"
Queue the moment when she sticks her finger into the star chamber, and behind the tabs into an area I didn't even know existed until that point.
She pulls it out and shows me a large, easily noticeable black stain covering her fingertip.
The room roared with laughter as I slunk away knocked down a few notches, sat back down, and crammed paper towel into the star chamber proper & wiped until nothing came out. Then a light coat of oil, wipe dry again,
