• Much like they were throughout last season, Sevilla are in the thick of the action at the top of La Liga (LL), although catching Real Madrid will take some doing. They trail the leaders by eight points – but have a game in hand – and following their 2-1 defeat to them in November, they’ve won their last two league matches by the same 1-0 scoreline.

• Sandwiched in between was a disappointing 1-0 UEFA Champions League defeat to RB Salzburg which means come February they’ll be playing in the Europa League – a competition in which they’ve excelled in recent years. Back in LL duties, Sevilla haven’t lost a home league fixture since May (W8, D1) and have led at half-time in all six wins here this season, so a repeat of last year’s H2H victory by – you guessed it – a 1-0 scoreline could be on the cards.

• After eventually finding out their Champions League Round of 16 opponents (Manchester United), Atlético Madrid must now refocus on their LL campaign as the reigning champions lie five points behind Sevilla after suffering two consecutive league defeats. They hadn’t previously suffered such a fate since February 2019, and both of their losses this month, to Mallorca (2-1) and Real Madrid (2-0), saw them lose the second half.

• A decent start would therefore be welcomed, especially as Atlético haven’t won any of the last three H2Hs here (D2, L1). With none of those games producing over 2.5 goals, the first goal could be crucial, so it’s worth noting that Atlético are unbeaten (W2, D2) when scoring first in LL away games this term.

• Players to watch: Sevilla’s Rafa Mir has opened the scoring in three of his last five goalscoring outings while Matheus Cunha has netted Atlético’s last two league goals, both coming after the 65th minute.
