A list of puns related to "Second Party System"
Hi all,
Crew of Osminog (donβt read if you are part of it) just entered the βOrigin systemβ finding out that they were not originally from Earth as they believed. Unfortunately just as they entered the system, the actual Earth disppeared together with itβs gravitational pull on Moon and space stations.
The system was still recovering from the Scream and this will be a heavy blow which attacts many eyes and weapons to the party. The inhabitants were not yet able to create spikedrive so the partyβs ability to jump between systems might be the culprit.
My question is: Why? What caused it? Could they get it back?
Thanks for your suggestions :)

Maybe I am misunderstanding, and someone can set the record straight for me. But from what I understand, around the time James Monroe became president, the Federalists collapsed and ceased to exist, and there was only one party for the remainder of his presidency, the Democratic-Republicans. And then at the end of his presidency, the Democratic-Republicans fractured into multiple parties.
So wouldn't that make John Quincy Adams and his allies Democratic-Republicans? But then when that party fractured, it just so happened Adams aligned himself with the pro-centralized government faction that became "National Republicans" and later "Whigs"? Or is there some nuance I'm missing? What was it that distinguished the Federalists from the National Republicans/Whigs? And what distinguished the Jeffersonian Democratic-Republicans from the Democratic Party of Andrew Jackson and Martin Van Buren? Why aren't they both considered continuations of the earlier parties?
In the United States, anyone can run to be the presidential candidate of a party. Who is allowed to vote in party primaries varies from state to state. There are several kinds of primaries.
Closed primaries
In general, a voter seeking to vote in a closed primary must first be a registered party member. Typically, the voter affiliates with a party on his or her voter registration application. This system deters βcross-overβ voting by members of other parties. Independent or unaffiliated voters, by definition, are excluded from participating in the party nomination contests. This system generally contributes to a strong party organization.
Closed primary states: Delaware
Maryland
New York
Florida
Nevada
Oregon
Kentucky
New Mexico
Pennsylvania
Partially closed primaries
In this system, state law permits political parties to choose whether to allow unaffiliated voters or voters not registered with the party to participate in their nominating contests before each election cycle. In this type of system, parties may let in unaffiliated voters, while still excluding members of opposing parties. This system gives the parties more flexibility from year-to-year about which voters to include. At the same time, it can create uncertainty about whether or not certain voters can participate in party primaries in a given year.
Partially closed primary states:
Connecticut
Idaho
Oklahoma
North Carolina
South Dakots
Utah
Partially open primaries
This system permits voters to cross party lines, but they must either publicly declare their ballot choice or their ballot selection may be regarded as a form of registration with the corresponding party. Iowa asks voters to choose a party on the state voter registration form, yet it allows a primary voter to publicly change party affiliation for purposes of voting on primary Election Day. Some state parties keep track of who votes in their primaries as a means to identify their backers.
Partially Open Primary States:
Illinois
Ohio
Indiana
Tennessee
Iowa
Wyoming
Open to unaffiliated voters primaries
A number of states allow only unaffiliated voters to participate in any party primary they choose, but do not allow voters who are registered with one party to vote in another partyβs primary. This system differs from a true open primary because a Democrat cannot cross over and vote in a Republican party primary, or vice versa. New Hampshire requires that unaffiliated voters declare affiliat

##Purpose
How many of you have ever tried to discuss an issue only to be BTFO by the point that the Democrats are the real racists and that the Republicans are the party of Lincoln?
In order to prevent the continued triggering of my fellow libs I have taken it upon myself to look into the issues and the politics which have divided our nation since its beginning. A personal project I have been working on is reading through all of the published presidential platforms in order to track the general changes that the parties have faced over the centuries of American democracy. I have begun taking notes on all of the platforms marking all of the specific policy points that they have prescribed and the changes that they officially have endorsed for the country. Using the generous archives of UC Santa Barbraβs American Presidency Project, I have been able to examine all the party platforms back to the 1840 election. Arthur Schlesingerβs History of US Presidential Elections and other primary documents are used to flesh out the commentary and provide background. I have chosen to start with the Second Party System, as this is where the first of our modern political parties comes to stage. The goal of this is to show the lineage of the issues and how the parties shaped political identities, and vise versa. For an exhaustive list of all issues detailed in the party platforms click here
##Background
The story begins, like all good stories do, enjoying dinner with John Quincy in 1824. With the end of James Monroeβs presidency, so ended the so called Era of Good Feelings. Though America was essentially a single party state, regional concerns still divided the nation. Issues of trade, internal improvements, the balance of state and federal government, national banks, and slavery lead to very different policy goals between the North, South, and West (Appalachia and beyond). Five men will, in 1824, attempt to claim the prize of the presidency. Westerners Andrew Jackson and Henry Clay, Southerners John Calhoun and William Crawford, and Northerner John Quincy Adams. Jackson was able to outmaneuver Clay for the South Western vote and relied on his humble beginnings to swell populist fervor among the commons man leading to his victory in Pennsylvania. His credentials as a famous general were an easy counter to Calhoun and Crawfordβs nationalistic appeals outside of their home states. When the election came about, the plurality of voters and elect
Can members here help me gain a better understanding on the differences in βFirst, Second and Third party" data and technology systems?
Would you like to end the two-party system? So would I.
Most Democratic Socialists want to vote for a Democratic Socialist, but often times we need to align ourselves with the Democratic party in order to get our interests heard and have any say in an election. The reason for that is due to how we vote. Most elections in the U.S. only allow voters to choose one candidate at a time. A large number of elections also only require the winner to have the most amount of votes at the end of the race (a plurality), not even requiring over 50%. This is how we end up with the two-party system.
One way forward to ending the two-party system is with STAR Voting:

With STAR Voting, you can support multiple candidates! This means being able to support a Democratic Socialist and even a "safe" candidate that you think is more likely to win. So long as you express yourself to the fullest, STAR Voting will let you have a say in the final automatic runoff. If more progressive ideas are going to advance in the future we will NEED to change how we vote. And anyone can support this. You can talk about this to the most conservative people you know, because at the end of the day, a more expressive ballot and more democratic election process helps everyone.
FAQ and Additional info:
Why not Ranked Choice Voting (RCV) ?
Ranked Choice Voting, also known as Instant Runoff Voting, has some flaws that make it a bad choice for a very polarized society such as the U.S. is now.
The Birth of the Pacific States
At 9:45 in the morning on May 1, 1937, members of the 12th Infantry Regiment surrounded the White House in Washington, D.C. Within an hour, Speaker of the House and acting President John Nance Garner announced via live radio broadcast, which would play on repeat for the rest of the day, that President Olson and Vice President Roosevelt had stepped and he, in their place, was declaring martial law and handing over all matters of national security to Army Chief of Staff Douglas MacArthur. This was the spark that finally set of the inferno of the Second American Civil War. While there had been no shortage of violence in the months since the New Year's Strike, this was the event that finally pushed even the moderates on all sides to decide upon the course of violence^(1).
However, while much has been written of the bloodshed and the vibrant personalities whose conflict bore the greatest loss of life ever witnessed on the North American continent, little attention has been paid to those leading the war's eventual victors in the Pacific States. To be certain, Frank Merriam and Hiram Johnson make for less compelling characters than Huey Long and Jack Reed, but for all their flaws, it was these men, clinging to the light of democracy on the West Coast who preserved the ideal of the American republic^(2).
Go West Young Man
When John Nance Garner held the first session of Congress on the afternoon of the coup on May 1, he found that the body had been reduced to a third of it's members. Surprising as this may sound, fewer and fewer members of the Socialist and America First parties had been in attendance since the New Year's Strike. When negotiations between President Olson and the insurrectionists broke down, the Congress was dominated almost to a man by members of the National Coalition. Even with that, there were a hundred or more Congressmen absent from the previous week's meeting. Numbering the entirety of Western Progressives and the Labor Caucus, they were joined by many Democrats and Republicans. A sweep of the city by Military Police found two dozen, either asleep, hiding, in a drunken stupor or in the process of fleeing. The rest had fled the Capital^(3).
Within minutes of Garner's speech to the nation, Governor Frank Merriam of California and Governor John Arthur Gellatly of Oregon spoke via telephone. The conversation, of which no transcript exists, concerned, quite obviously, what direction the Pacific states

The first large scale engagement of the Western Theatre would be a naval one. The Panama Canal was, at that time, still under the control of Federalist forces and while the Atlantic theatre was dominated by an icy standoff between the Royal Navy and the Union of Britain's PLN, a sizable fleet remained at the command of MacArthur's junta.
On February 2, 1938, the Federal navy under the command of William Halsey Jr. fell upon a squadron a few miles off the shore of San Diego. The attack sent shockwaves through the Pacific States, which had previously been spared the chaos that pervaded the rest of the country. President Frank Merriam personally called on acting Chief of Naval Operations Chester W. Nimitz, telling him that this would be the Pacific Fleet's trial by fire, determining whether or not they could be trusted going forward.
After scourging the coast for a few days, on February 6, Halsey's fleet began to make it's way south along the Baja Penninsula. On the 8th, Halsey found himself caught between two halves of Nimitz's fleet, his own ships stretched in a thin line, leaving them open to attack over a wide area. While both commanders would wake away from the battle unscathed, some twenty thousand Americans would be killed or injured, the Pacific fleet lost ten ships and the Federals thirty, with another five captured. Afterwards, Halsey would limp off to the Canal while Nimitz returned in triumph to Sacramento^(1).
This would the last time that the Federal and Pacific fleets had a meaningful exchange. Though MacArthur would urge King Edward to direct the Royal Navy based in Australia to move against Pacific sea lanes, the King's military advisors considered it a needless waste of resources. By the Fall, the Panama Canal would be under the control of the Provisional Government. The daring of this operation, executed under the command of then Captain Sid McMath's Marines, needn't be repeated here, for it has been dramatized and recorded extensively, as is appropriate for one of the events that helped make McMath the titan he became and remains in the history of the United States.
The March to the Mississippi
The Provisional Government's strategy for the war was rather simple: while the insurrectionists and the putschists were busy beating the hell out of each other in the East, the thrown-together forces of the Provisional Army would seize great swathes of western land, sweeping away small federal garrisons and partisan mil

The main thing I'm trying to figure out here is if this resource based system is worth completing, polishing, and balancing, or if I should just return to my existing more traditional attribute + skill dice pool setup. Does it seem interesting to you, or too complex?
The main goal of this document is to explain the basic rules to playtest players. Since I last showed it here I've taken suggestions by removing the "in character" vague hints the setting. Instead I'm just going to rely on the game's elevator pitch for setting info. I've also added examples for everything, added a clearer statement about what your character is, added equipment, and more info about how leveling up works.
Keep in mind, the intended audience does not include game masters. There's nothing on how to run the game or the setting, there's only rules on how to play a character.
If it helps, here's the elevator pitch for the game. "In a near future where society is fraying due to your worst climate change anxieties coming true, play characters ready to transition from being normal people and into a life of supernatural adventures. You'll need to develop your X-men style powers by uncovering X-files style secrets and engaging in X-com style combat. You'll quickly learn that it's less important what your character's body and mind can do and more important how synchronized you are to a mysterious incorporeal version of yourself."
