Hi folks, I would really like to hear some more jazz, fusion jazz, ethnic jazz or whatever kind of jazz with scat singing performances. Not singing, but literally playing voice like that amazes me, but the combination of the two is also great. I prefer female voice but it is not mandatory. Some of the tracks I find beautiful and enjoy are:

My sister showed me this back in the day, maybe on YouTube and it became one of our favorites for a laugh. Best guess is I saw it around 2008. It was in English, I think American. Possibly recorded as part of a radio show or local public television event (not local to me, I just mean that it didn’t seem like a big production). Not great video quality, kind of fuzzy. Maybe a yellow set? I can’t find it anywhere and I’d love to send it to my sister again.
Edit to add: they aren’t really singing, more like saying “skee dop doo daa” in flat voices while looking uncomfortable. This video might have been scrubbed from the internet.

I read a comment, either here or on YouTube, from someone who had seen the Cocteau Twins live. If I remember correctly the commenter expressed their disappointment that Liz was singing through the whole performance in a dolphin-like scat style that was very different from her usual approach. I've lost track of where I read this, and I'm really curious now about what that sounded like. I'm not very familiar with Cocteau Twins live recordings, any ideas what period/ performance this might have been?
What songs have scat-singing in them? I know soul to squeeze has "Doo-doo dingle zing a dong bone Ba-di ba-da ba-zumba crunga cong gone bad" but how much more is there?

Basically 'skiribapapa' vocal onomatopoeia in genres like rock, electronic, R&B, etc. I think it's very original and interesting when artists manage to use their own voices as instruments it brings agility, originality and livelihood to their music!
Esthero does it, Björk does it, Nelly Furtado does it in her 'Whoa Nelly' album and also Jhelisa (though she is a more obscure Soul artist, whom I definitely recommend y'all listen to btw!)
My wife got this melodic figure that we're both pretty sure is from an 80s pop song in her head today.
The thing we definitely know is this melody line. It might be an intro or a chorus or an outro or a bridge or something, but it's definitely sung as scat singing with no lyrics beyond "duh da da duh dat da duh da da duh" and we believe is accompanied by hand claps or finger snaps.

We're both pretty sure it's from the 80s but possibly early 90s.
The image in our heads when we're imagining who sings it it is preppily dressed white dudes.

I remember hearing this song in the early '00s, but it's likely older than that. It featured male and female vocal harmonies in the verses, and the chorus features only the male singer scat singing. The instrumental was mostly acoustic guitars, but the outro had an electric guitar solo before fading out.

Scatman John and his fans found out the hard way that Googling “scat” or “scatman”is a risky click if there ever was one. Of course excrement is not actually worthless, as not only followers of Rule 34, but also any farmers, already know. But my point is that words for feces often are used colloquially to indicate something of no value at all, and this is not a new usage by any means.
Scat is a doublet with shit, and both come from a root that means “to cut” — (think “turd cutter” or “pinching a log”). But like a lot of doublets, the usage and connotation between the two word forms varies considerably. In this case scat came to be seen as much less vulgar.
Wiktionary gives the etymology of scat singing as onomatopoetic, as syllables that sound like “scat” are commonly used as vocables in jazz singing. But somehow I get the sense this doesn’t tell the whole story. Is there any evidence that the meaningful use of the word scat might have influenced its meaningless use? If not, why don’t we call it “shooby-doo singing” or “nah-na-nah singing”?

Scat is a very unique yet catchy style of singing that I think deserves more love. It especially works well in upbeat jazz songs and can flow nicely in other genres when it needs to. I think we should popularize it’s again.
