So I recently bought a Saiga 7.62x39 from a friend who wanted nothing to do with it (he has a HUGE gun collection). This particular Saiga had a previous owner who spray painted the top dust cover (horribly) and added a UTG picatinny rail to the front. On top of that he spray painted the rubber hand guard inserts as well. SMH. On top of that, this poor rifle has sat for a while and has a few spots of minor rusting. So with all that said, I’m looking to convert this ugly duckling into a beautiful commie swan rifle.     I recently purchased a conversion kit from CSS and am waiting for it to arrive. I’ve heard mostly good things about the kit and I am very handy and have all the tools I need (drill press, vice, etc). Only thing I’m not crazy about is screwing in a bullet guide. I’ve read elsewhere people suggest riveting it in and wanted to know what people’s experience with this was. Also, any tips or suggestions for other parts I could use to convert the front end would be great.                   

MY PROGRESS SO FAR:
So I’ve used 0000 steel wool with Eezox and cleaned up most of the rust. Not too crazy about using the 0000 steel wool because of the shavings it leaves behind that I’m sure will rust eventually if you don’t clean them all away (might use scotch bright pad to do the rest). I am waiting now to clean it all off and re-spray the finish and possibly bake it on (brownell aluma Hyde II matte black). I will update with my progress as I go but would love some advice and input from you guys!

I found a Saiga by Izhmash for 1200 bucks at a local gun store. It has an alg trigger and Midwest industries hand guard on it. Y’all think it’s worth picking up?
