Seeking Sources: Early 19th century Russian Mennonites

Johann Boese, 1831-1915, is my earliest known patrilineal ancestor; a brief summary of his life can be found at http://www.angelfire.com/va2/boese/boese1.html . However, it's extremely unlikely that he was born in the Crimea, as is claimed there, because as far as I can tell, Mennonite settlement didn't begin there until after the Crimean war.

It's possible that he migrated to there from the Mennonite colony in Molotschna, where I've found mention of several Boeses; or even that he was born in Karolswalde of the Volhynien province, where several of his fellow migrants to America were born. I've also found mention that Boeses lived in Danzig-Neugarten, in Prussia, at perhaps roughly the right time period.

Does anyone here have any advice on pinning down where Johann was born; or perhaps even on identifying his own ancestors?

Thank you for your time.

Would it be better to learn standard German before learning Plautdietsch?

Greetings! I'm doing a research on Plautdietsch-speaking Mennonite communities in South America, however, while written Plautdietsch is having a revival in these communities, the majority of them seem to only use it in oral communication, while the rest of their literature and newspapers are in standard German, so I think that the latter will be more useful for this study.

I was learning standard German as a hobby until around 2014 or so when I lost interest, I thought that I would fare well in only learning Plautdietsch from scratch without knowing too much of standard German, but I do not think that this will be too helpful, so would it be better for me to fully immerse myself into standard Deutsch first before switching over to Plautdietsch?

Another issue is that there is very few online learning material for Plautdietsch (for obvious reasons, given that its speakers are almost all rural Mennonites who use few technology), other than a few not-so-helpful youtube videos, the other sources that I found are like 3 old Plautdietsch dictionary sites and a translation of the New Testament that is freely available.

Also again, this is about Plautdietsch-speaking Russian Mennonite communities in South America like in Paraguay and Bolivia, not those from Canada and the US who are more numerous, so most of these Plautdietsch speakers I am researching and eventually entering contact with do not speak with an American accent and do not have too much influences from English, which would've made it easier for me.

Worth mentioning that (Brazilian) Portuguese is my native language, but I also speak English, Spanish and Italian, so since English is the only Germanic language I speak with fluency, up until recently I was trying to learn Plautdietsch by trying to understand it from the lens of an English speaker, as I had no intentions of learning standard Deutsch, hence why I think that I am beginning to learn it in a wrong way.

Religious Group in Ukraine with 8+ Children!

Youthful Villages

As Ukraine witnesses a population implosion, a small sect nicknamed the "Ukrainian Amish" - by Russian and Ukrainian media sources - has been growing rapidly in Western regions of the country.

I first believed they may be a Russian "Old Believer" sect or Mennonite group (certainly not Amish). Yet, I can see why the media refers to them as "Amish", as they have denounced electricity, vehicles and many other modern technologies while dressing "plain".

Researching the Ukrainian term "ΠΊΠ°ΡˆΠΊΠ΅Ρ‚Π½ΠΈΠΊΠΈ" (meaning "Caps Wearers") will showcase many photos and news articles about the group: youtube video here.

Further, an Amish man - Ed Kline - went to Ukraine for 10 months around 2009 to gain insight about the sect. His video recording is found under the "Anabaptist Identity Conference 2010", episode 9: Ukrainian "Amish" Worldview. An overview of the recording can be found here.

Demographics:

  • This group has large families: 8-12 children on average, with a few noted with up to 18!
  • Ed Kline discusses a high retention-rates of their youth into the faith + new conversions.
  • Kline estimates their numbers to be around 3,000-5,000+ members in 2009, although, recent articles claim 10,000+ around 2015.
  • Denounce birth control.
  • Newlyweds are provided a house by the entire village collectively.
  • Found in rural villages near Ternopil, Ukraine: Stinka, Naberezhne and Kosmyryn etc.

Similarities to the Amish:

  • Hold Sabbath/rituals in their houses.
  • Practice separation from world: no electricity, less modern conveniences, travel by horse & buggy; yet, some emergent liberal groups/families seem to have cellphones for work...
  • Pacifism.
  • Practice excommunication by the "Ban".
  • Farming livelihoods, housing construction/labour and small business centred economy.
  • Against the use of Icons/religious imagery.

SERIOUS: This subreddit needs to understand what a "dad joke" really means.

I don't want to step on anybody's toes here, but the amount of non-dad jokes here in this subreddit really annoys me. First of all, dad jokes CAN be NSFW, it clearly says so in the sub rules. Secondly, it doesn't automatically make it a dad joke if it's from a conversation between you and your child. Most importantly, the jokes that your CHILDREN tell YOU are not dad jokes. The point of a dad joke is that it's so cheesy only a dad who's trying to be funny would make such a joke. That's it. They are stupid plays on words, lame puns and so on. There has to be a clever pun or wordplay for it to be considered a dad joke.

Again, to all the fellow dads, I apologise if I'm sounding too harsh. But I just needed to get it off my chest.

Help name some sapphics

My girlfriend (38f) and I (37f) are planning to get married and want to select a wholly new last name. We were both married to men for 15+ years and don’t want to keep those names, but for various reasons don’t want to return to our maiden names.

I suggested β€œFluffernutter” as a joke months ago and we and our kids refer to our combined household as such, but she insists that in her profession that last name would not inspire confidence. Our kids will be keeping their dads’ names.

We’ve tried a mash-up of previous names and haven’t found something that we love.

This is criteria that we are considering:

-Needs to sound like a last name

-Needs to be culturally appropriate

-Meaningful is great but not crucial

-Our first names are something like Nora and Layla, so preferably not ending in an β€œuh”.

-Similarly, not beginning with an β€œuh” or sound that is hard to say together.

-If it incorporates an M or K or both that’s great, but not required.

My background is German, Polish, Mennonite. My original last name is common among Russian Mennonites, but weird everywhere else. She has an English background and had a common English speaking name.

So we have largely been playing with German translations of things we like/are important to us.

Some possibilities are

Mulkatz (Americanized spelling) of German β€œdumpster cat”

Amsler something like β€œbirder” in German

but we just aren’t sold.

We love gardening and cats. We are casual bird watchers, enjoy plant identification, history, rocks, and nature stuff. We like the mountains and the prairie. We are Christians; into justice and mercy and peace. A classic or literary reference could be good, like β€œFinch.” I’ve studied classical languages, so something out of Latin, Greek, or Hebrew could be ok. We pretty simple people. We met online and ATM don’t have any places that are particularly special to us. I love whimsy.

Just because it's a joke, doesn't mean it's a dad joke

Alot of great jokes get posted here! However just because you have a joke, doesn't mean it's a dad joke.

THIS IS NOT ABOUT NSFW, THIS IS ABOUT LONG JOKES, BLONDE JOKES, SEXUAL JOKES, KNOCK KNOCK JOKES, POLITICAL JOKES, ETC BEING POSTED IN A DAD JOKE SUB

Try telling these sexual jokes that get posted here, to your kid and see how your spouse likes it.. if that goes well, Try telling one of your friends kid about your sex life being like Coca cola, first it was normal, than light and now zero , and see if the parents are OK with you telling their kid the "dad joke"

I'm not even referencing the NSFW, I'm saying Dad jokes are corny, and sometimes painful, not sexual

So check out r/jokes for all types of jokes

r/unclejokes for dirty jokes

r/3amjokes for real weird and alot of OC

r/cleandadjokes If your really sick of seeing not dad jokes in r/dadjokes

Punchline !

Edit: this is not a post about NSFW , This is about jokes, knock knock jokes, blonde jokes, political jokes etc being posted in a dad joke sub

Edit 2: don't touch the thermostat
