Merry Christmas!
We purchased a Balinese male about 2 months ago. He's been pretty great so far. He is very talkative, snuggly, needs a LOT of attention. I am historically allergic to cats, but he hasn't caused more than a handful of sneezes so far. We were generally aware of this up front and wanted a cat that wasn't necessarily going to mind his own business.
We have intended that he be indoor for several reasons, one being that we do have local coyotes, we would prefer an indoor cat and we do have a signed contract with the breeder that he not be free outdoors.
We let him out on our deck a few times (which is not connected to the ground, one story up) and he loved watching birds and hanging out. But then he got bold and started climbing up onto the handrail and recently just straight jumped up onto it. Below is grass, but we didn't really feel we could trust him not to jump at a bird or something of interest and fall and hurt himself.
So my wife bought a harness and leash and started taking him outside. He won't go near the road as cars are terrifying, but loves exploring our wild steep yard.
But now . . . he expects to be taken out immediately when we get up and will meow loudly, constantly for HOURS until we do. We cannot make him stop or distract him for more than 10mins before he starts up again.
Did we screw ourselves with training this expectation into him?
Was this a bad idea?
Will he calm down a little as he gets older?
I have some long term plans to build an enclosed catio on a concrete pad attached to the house and figure out how to give him an insulated pet door for that, but it's getting cold, so that won't be until late spring.
