Roman Tradition/Legacy in the Post-Roman Western β€œBarbarian” Kingdoms.

Hi, I’m writing an MA thesis on the various kingdoms that arose after the β€œfall” of the Western Roman Empire c. 476, and wondered if anyone could point me in the direction of some good primary sources that I could read.

I’m not trying to answer whether or not the β€œbarbarians” caused the fall of the empire, or whether it was already in the process of collapse, but rather that, although they were not Roman in name, the peoples and the kingdoms that arose were really a continuation of Roman traditions and ideals.

I’m currently working my way through Gregory of Tours, Jordanes, and Procopius, but wondered if anyone had any thoughts on the matter?

Much appreciated!

What was the reaction of the Greek elites to the progressive victories of the Romans over the Hellenistic kingdoms?

We know that the Greeks considered themselves superior to anyone who was not one of their own. We also know, from previous questions in this community, that Greek intellectuals were convinced that Latin was a partially barbaric and partially Hellenic dialect of Greek. I would be interested to know what was the immediate reaction of the Greek elites first to the defeat of Pyrrhus, who was considered one of the best generals in the world, and then to the subjugation of the major successor kingdoms.

Was the supposed racial superiority of the Greeks merely cultural or also physical? In other words, were the Greeks convinced that they were militarily superior to all other Mediterranean civilizations? How much did the Greek leaders know about the Roman state, and how convinced were the Macedonians and Seleucids that they were capable of standing up to the Romans? Finally, I would be interested to know what the opinion of ordinary people was once the Roman conquest of Greece was complete. Would the average Athenian have considered the Romans as barbaric as the Persians, or were there differences between these two civilizations in the common view?

How did Europe go from Western Roman Empire to disparate kingdoms?

How did the kingdoms of Europe rise from the remnants of Rome? Anytime I've learned about this period, it's been kind of glazed over as "Western Rome declined and was overcome by Goths and internal strife, then Charlemagne conquered Europe and his empire split into various kingdoms which eventually became the countries of today." In particular, how did we get to the idea of the divine right of kingship? I know the Pope declared Charlemagne "Holy Roman Emperor," did that just transfer to his heirs and get claimed by other kings at other times? It just feels like a big shift in the idea of what a state/country is to go from Rome to medieval kingdoms.

Did the Golden Bull of 1356 say there a rule that Bohemia wasthe only kingdom allowed in the Holy Roman Empire?

Since 962 each of the Emperors was also the King of the East Franks or Germany and of Italy or Lombardy. Since 1032 each Emperor was also the King of Arles or Burgundy.

So when Bohemia became a kingdom it was the fourth kingdom in the empire. But if someone discounts the kingdoms of Germany, Lombardy, and Burgundy as having been united with the emperorship, then Bohemia could be considered to be the only kingdom within the Empire.

I have seen statements that there was a rule that there could only be one kingdom within the Empire, Bohemia.

And recently I read a statement claiming that the Golden Bull of 1356 decreed that Bohemia was the only kingdom allowed in the Empire.

I thought that I had read a translation of the Golden Bull without noticing such a clause.

Does anyone know whether there is such a clause making Bohemia the only possible kingdom in the Holy Roman Empire?

Why has no one claimed the title of Roman empire/kingdom/Republic since the fall of Constantinople in 1453?

I'm very curious about this, I'm not talking about the Countries that claim to be it's successor like Russia, Spain and all the others, No what I mean is why no one ever took the Name and flag colours of the old Western or Eastern empires.

Long after the west faded away into mediocrity the east lived on for a thousand more years, never called themselves anything but romans, so why when they fell no one else ever brought the old Name back? It has allot of prestige behind it I'm sure.

Even when greece finally broke off from the ottomans they never declared themselves roman, but rather went back to greek roots, why is that? They have been calling themselves Roman for so long and now they call themselves greek once more, I feel this is probably Greek Nationalism and pride, it makes sense why they never did call themselves Roman.

When Italy United again why did they never call themselves Roman? I'm sure the old empire must have been a good source for italian Nationalism.

Allot of people today blindly idolize the old Empire today with it being gone for more then half century now so how much prestige did this title have back then I keep wondering if people today are still fascinated with the Romans.

I know allot of people claimed the Title but no one actually ever went out of their way to fully claim the Name and Colours of the Empire it just faded away like all the other dead empires allong the way, but I can't think of any other empire that has such a cult following.

The Aquila is used as a symbol of authority and freedom which is mostly associated with the Roman Empire but many kingdoms used other animals, usually the lion associated with strength (or in Asian empires, the dragon or the tiger was used).

How the eagle become associated with freedom and strength? Why did the Roman Empire use this animal as a symbol of their strength when they had contact with lions?
