The general solution (all four roots) for ax^4+bx^3+cx^2+dx+e=0 in terms of only a, b, c, d, & e. The four x terms are the solutions. I've had to express them each in two different ways so as to avoid taking square roots of negative numbers, which demos won't compute even when the imaginary component cancels out later, which is a shame. It was a bit fiddly to get working but this is a very fun graph to play around with. Enjoy!

Have recently been able to derive the cubic formula for the general cubic equation f(x) = ax^3 + bx^2 + cx + d, given the method of dividing up the volume of a cube of dimensions t x t x t, and solving the depressed cubic, as pioneered by Cardano. The key trick was the substitution x = y - a/3b.

I have gotten a bit of the way to deriving the general quartic formula, but hit a massive road block with all the algebra involved with the coefficients. One can see how that goes with my derivation of the quartic formula.

I have attached my effort as a google drive pdf to this point, and would also like to iterate how interesting it was to find the method of completing the square with a quartic. I never knew that was a thing.

Why does the quadratic, cubic, and quartic formula work, while no quintic formula can exist?

Why is finding the roots or solutions to any function so important? Moreover why work on solving something equal to zero?

Why do mathematicians go to such great lengths to find the zero’s(solutions) of polynomials like creating the quadratic formula, or worse: the quartic formula.

I have a survey with 2 input variables and an output. I want to test out various degrees for the function and see which one has the highest r2 value (i.e. maybe it's a multivariable input cubic function or maybe it's multivariable linear.)

Unfortunately, I can't find any calculators to do this online (except for multivariable linear, but I want to test it for other degrees including quartic) Could someone help? What's the formula for multivariable cubic/quadratic regression? I could possibly solve it myself then.

School is split into many levels. There is kindergarten, elementary school, junior high school (middle school), and high school. Each level is divided into 3-5 smaller stages. The gap between the levels is like a chasm and it is almost impossible to cross. However, this standard cannot be applied to Xiaoming.

However, Xiaoming, who has been persistent and brave since he was a child, agreed to Xiaohu's challenge, because retreating from this challenge will hinder his "Heart of Pursuit of Knowledge". Uncle Wang, who guards the doors of the school, was moved by Xiaoming's spirit and threw Xiaoming a set of bronze grade arithmetic cards in the middle of the night, and often secretly tutored Xiaoming.

To everyone's shock, Xiaoming and Xiaohu were evenly matched in the Duel. Xiaohu, forced into a corner, finally used his family treasure "counting sticks". Just when everyone thought Xiaoming is sure to lose, Xiaoming was enlightened to the utmost mysteries of mathematics, and he created the ability: "Counting with Both Fingers and Toes". His academic ability was instantly increased to the level of "mid level kindergarten" and easily defeats the Xiaohu who only had academic ability level of "low level kindergarten" in one fell swoop.

For context I'm a Refuse Driver (Garbage man) & today I was on food waste. After I'd tipped I was checking the wagon for any defects when I spotted a lone pea balanced on the lifts.

Also, it is quite easy to derive using a method of completing a square.

The formula for the cubic and the quartic equation are much more difficult.

Finally, Galois proved that in general for equations of degrees 5 or more such a formula, that expresses the roots of the polynomial using +,-, *, /, and roots of any order doesn't exist.

Those formulas are called radicals.
