Happy little update: the purpureus is back in its shell, he's only sitting on moss since I knew he didn't want to molt (he evacuated due to distress since he was basically dead after shipping in the cold). A nice little surprise after coming back from work. I hope he stays in his shell now.

Again my purpureus! Do you all ever just see all the isopods scatter away in panic when you turn on the lights? I'm loving them like my crabs and whenever I find isopods where they don't belong (like the basement) I always put them in with the crabs. They're a proper colony now!

Red Koji Rice/Red Yeast Rice (Monascus purpureus) has anyone any experience with this?

Red Yeast Rice (made with Monascus purpureus)

As far as my research went, Red Yeast Rice (RYR) is made the same way as other koji.

Whereas Koji spores like Aspergillus oryazae are easy to obtain, I found it impossible to get Monascus purpureus spores (where I live). But after 2 years I was lucky enough to purchase a few bags of RYR.

My idea was, that I could use this RYR to inoculate fresh rice. What are the chances that this works?

I read, that the growth of the fungus (Aspergillus oryazae) is stopped before it can produce spores (biter taste?).

I didn't find much about the production of RYR (mostly due to papers which weren't free) but it seems that the fermentation takes 5-7 days (plus drying) whereas the fermentation of koji (Aspergillus oryazae) takes only 2-3 days (is this right?).

So, my assumption is, that in RYR it is desired that the fungus will produce spores and therefore there might be a chance to make fresh RYR from storebought RYR and fresh rice. It also could be possible, that the Monascus purpureus just takes longer to grow. It's hard to find any information because if you search for this, you mostly get spammed with all this supplement shit or how to make Red Yeast wine from RYR.

Is there anyone who has any experience or deeper knowledge about this?
