How essential is the Puranic literature to Vaishnavism and Shaivism?

From what I understand (please correct me if I'm wrong), the Puranas (typically) provide the foundation for the modern practice of Vaishnavism and Shaivism—Vaishnavites revere the Bhagavata Purana, and Shaivites revere the Shiva Purana. Is it uncommon for followers of these lineages to centralize other texts? For example, are there Vaishnavites who primarily look to the Bhagavad Gita, or the Mahabharata as a whole? Are there Shaivites who primarily look to the Shvetashvatara Upanishad, or some other selection?
