Help needed with the Devi-Bhagavata purana

I recently bought the Devi-Bhagavata purana from amazon. It has been translated into English by Swami Vijnanananda wich was a direct disciple from Ramakrishna but i have doubts that it is correct. I will give 2 examples. If the translation is true than how can Shaktas follow it?

example 1 from chapter 3

18-24. At every Manvantara, in each Dvâpara Yuga, Veda Vyâsa expounds the Purânas

duly to preserve the religion. Veda Vyâsa is no other person than Visnu Himself; He, in the

form of Veda Vyâsa, divides the (one) Veda into four parts, in every Dvâpara Yuga, for the

good of the world. The Brahmânas of the Kali age are shortlived and their intellect (Buddhi)

is not sharp; they cannot realise the meaning after studying the Vedas; knowing this in every

Dvâpara Yuga Bhagavân expounds the holy Purâna Samhitas. The more so because

women, S’udras, and the lower Dvijas are not entitled to hear the Vedas; for their good, the

Purânas have been composed.

example 2 from chapter 4

15-27. There is no prospect in the after birth of the sonless; never, never will Heaven be his.

Without son, there is none other who can be of help in the next world. Thus in the Dharma

S’âstras, Manu and other Munis declare that the man who has sons goes to Heaven and the

sonless one can never go to Heaven. The man possessing a son is entitled to the Heavenly

pleasures can be vividly seen, rather than imagined. The man with son is freed from sins;

this is the word of the Vedas. The sonless man becomes very much distressed even at the

time of death and while lying on bed that is ground at that time, mournfully thinks. “This all

my vast wealth, various things, this my beautiful house, who will enjoy all these?”

Buying Gold on Akshaya Tritiya is a SIN according to Srimad Bhagavata Purana

I was curious about the hype around Akshay Tritiya and buying gold and found out that it’s a pure marketing gimmick played out by the gold vendors and businessmen. Nowhere it’s written that it’s auspicious to buy gold on AkshayTritiya on the contrary it’s forbidden to do 5 things on AkshayTritiya as well as every day if possible (but the sins get multiplied if carried out on this day as explained by Parikshit Maharaj placing Kali in the 5 places in Srimad Bhagavata Purana, 1st Skandha)

  1. Gambling
  2. Consuming Alcohol
  3. Indulging in Sex
  4. Consuming Meat
  5. Buying Gold

Were considered even more greater sins on this auspicious day of birth of Parasurama, 6th Avatar of Lord Vishnu

The gold merchants and traders started spreading fake news about the unlimited or un-diminished(Akshaya) returns if gold is purchased on this day, they also started attributing Gold to Goddess Lakshmi as a pure marketing gimmick whereas it was mentioned in Puranas that Goddess of Wealth Lakshmi is only in the following places/things:

  1. The face of an elephant with its trunk in upright position
  2. The forehead with Sindhoor between the division of hair of a woman
  3. A Lotus flower

Is it true that Sri Ramanujacharya ji never quoted from Srimad Bhagavata Purana? Also, any info on what the first Purana written was?

I've heard various conflicting theories about what "the original Purana" was (I think Vishnu Purana is one of the strong candidates?) but I don't know much about the evidence presented for each theory. For those of you who are familiar with Sri Ramanujacarya ji's writings, is it true he didn't quote from Srimad Bhagavatam? If so, why or why not would that suggest that this great Purana wasn't written by that time?

I'm primarily interested in disinterested arguments from history backed up by evidence, rather than traditional beliefs and word-of-mouth, though all perspectives are welcome.

Current state of my project to experience all highly notable literature/works.

Hi again. Three weeks ago I posted about a project I'm working on. For those who haven't seen it yet:

>So, I am embarking on an interesting project. I intend to experience the best art and media humanity has to offer before I die. Namely this is all the highly notable and interesting books, plays, art, music, films, TV shows, and video games. I guess you could call it a bucket list. I've been indexing it chronologically and downloading it to an external hard drive.

I then solicited suggestions for highly notable/significant ancient and medieval literature that I was missing from an early draft of what the list would cover. I got over 100 responses; it was clear I was missing a lot. So, I pretty much started from scratch, doing multiple sweeps of any pre-Renaissance literature, and incorporated many of the suggestions I received, ranging from missing individual works to missing authors and cultures.

I should also note that in order to prevent this list from becoming unwieldly, I am limiting myself to 10,000 entries total, forcing myself to take a more deliberate and top-down approach. So far, I have 261 entries for the time span 4000 BC to 1400 AD: 12 Ancient-era, 121 Classical-era, and 128 Medieval-era works. 251 are literature, 10 are music. In other words, 2.61% of the list is Medieval era works or earlier, which seems quite reasonable to me and leaves plenty of room for more modern works spanning across more mediums.

I thought I would share what I have so far before I begin work on more modern stuff. Note that bolded entries are in the top 1,000 works, the cream of the crop, the most notable of all. If you're following along with me and don't want it to take a decade or longer to get through the whole completed list, just sticking to the bolded entries will give you a good taste too.

Ancient Era (4000 BC - 1001 BC)

Year (circa) — Title — Origin Description
2350 BC — Pyramid Texts — Egyptian Earliest known ancient Egyptian text that concerns assisting dead spirits
2100 BC — The Epic of Gilgamesh — Sumerian Earliest surviving notable literature about a mythological king
2058 BC — Sumerian King List — Sumerian Ancient Sumerian list of city states and rulers, many with impossible reigns of thousands of years
1875 BC — Story of Sinuhe — Egyptian Considered one of the finest works in ancient Egyptian literature

Interested to hear your take on this discussion on Vedas

So, I'm from India, and had been an atheist for a long time, primarily because I was not convinced that there is any proof for the existence of God. I was not seriously seeking answers or anything, I just wasn't really bothered then. But during my engineering days, I came across a group that practiced Gaudiya Vaishnavism, which is a subset of Vaishnavism (primarily, the belief that Vishnu or his incarnations are the Supreme Lord). Gaudiya Vaishnavism holds that Krishna is the Supreme Lord, and that Vishnu is one of his expansions. I initially attended their discourses, and through a mixture of somewhat convincing answers, my own newly ignited curiosity, and in general the good quality of the devotees, I took to the practice whole-heartedly. I was then a strict theist for four years, after which I wanted to leave the group, because I found it too restrictive. Restriction in terms of what music one can listen to, in terms of what books that one can read and so on. I found the principles difficult to follow. I was also curious to explore other philosophies such as Western, Buddhism, Shaivism and that too from their own sources, rather than what devotees had to say, because there'll naturally be bias. After I left, I'm still in touch with some of them, and they're more like usual friends, and are not fanatic enough to push their thoughts on me. My position now is that of an agnostic, because I'm not sure whether God exists (including non-scriptural) or not. I'm currently reading Russell's History of Western Philosophy (read till Spinoza) and am going to read Anthony Kenny's next.

So, one of the friends that I'm still in touch with (two years senior to me from my college), is a practicing monk and is open to any sort of questions. He is also learning Sanskrit and in general, I regard him to be more reasonably versed in Vedas than me. I recently had a lot of discussion with him regarding God, Vedas etc. and wanted to hear your take/perspective on this. The questions are by me and answers by him (mostly from memory); I told him to forget that I had been a practicing devotee and answer my questions anew.

Q1. How do you know that there is a God? Where's the evidence for such an entity?

A. Evidence of God can be realized only through personal experience, which is based on faith on God and his word (scriptures). Since God is by definition non-material, we cannot perceive him (let's refer to him for brevity) through our senses or instruments (i.e. through the in
