Could a solid planet with twice the surface area of earth possibly have the same/similar gravity?
For instance if that planet were somehow made of less dense/lighter material. Idk. I’m thinking a planet exactly like earth (i.e. rock planet with atmosphere/water), just way bigger.
I’m writing a story and I want there to be absolutely colossal continents. Yuge land masses.
However if the planet were 2x as big as earth on the surface, the gravity would be insane, all else kept proportional. And consequently humans would have to look very very different due to evolution from this amount of gravity, or they would just never have evolved and only insects or fish or whatever would be able to survive.
I know if it’s fantasy/fiction, ultimately most people don’t really care about this kind of stuff. But I’m wondering for myself would it be possible to have a huge solid planet without a disastrous increase in gravity?
I built a bunch of planetary mass harvesters and i have a decent stockpile, but i cant figure out which of these megastructures builds the darn thing. i looked it up and saw something about a "lunar macro fabricator" but despite building attack moons and planetcraft, and having all the megastructure traditions, i can't build one, its not listed.does anyone have any idea how i use the planetary mass?
Also, how would mechanical life recover from said solar flare?
So, I did a pretty long (not sure if good) reply to a question from u/RawwkSC2's post. I thought maybe some others, who may miss it in the depths of the comment section might benefit from reading this approach. OR! You may be able to tell me why I'm dumb and help me improve on my problem solving skills!
Original Reply (based just on theory crafting, without timings of the build. This is why posting a replay is critical, so we can see the timing windows / scouting info)
Hey! Late to the party. Do you have a replay we could have a look at? I can't recall the timings of the PF into Ravens build. But, there should be a fairly simple kill timing quite early on, which you can abuse and not even worry about it.
My usual approach to "nonsense" stuff is to just kill them. There is a reason this isn't standard at the pro level. Same with one or 2 base mass BC (not the uThermal BC guide which is viable because it gets... other units lol), or other shenanigans. It's all about finding the weak spot, being able to scout it, and just making a mental note to do X and you see it.
For example, lets say they PF at 2:00, and they start Raven production at 3:00 or 3:30 (depending if 1/1/1 CC or a regular Expand into 1/1/1). OK, so by around 5:00 they should have 2-3 Ravens. OK, so if we scout an Ebay and a PF by 3:00, lets say we're doing a 2 Gas Factory expand (1/1/0 with a 2:20 CC), then we just do the following: ask what they can have at 5:00 and what can kill a PF, 2-3 Ravens and a couple tanks (remember, they won't have that much since they're mining a lot of gas to sustain their Raven production, and the PF also costs gas. They're likely either cutting on mineral based stuff, or they're cutting Tanks.
OK, so if we go for a 3:00 Starport (standard with either RFE or 2 Gas 1/1/0 CC) then by 3:40 we can start producing air units. Accounting for 30s travel time across the map, we could have 4 Vikings on his side of the map at 5:10. We could also start Tech Lab Factory production at 3:00 if we haven't gone for 2 Hellions, or just in general if going RFE. So we could have 3 TL units on his side by 5:00. I'd probably suggest going for 1 Tank and 2 Cyclones. The Tank would put his PF on a timer, and force the Ravens to engage. Your Barracks could also have made between 4-8 Marin

It makes sone sense that communications might work from behind the planet, but it seems to me that transporters would be line-of-sight only, ie. unable to transport through a planetary mass. The only way a ship could stay constantly in line-of-sight transporter range would be in a geostationary orbit, yet they are normally said to be in “standard” orbits and are seen on screen to be whizzing around the planet.
Do they deploy relay satellites every time? Am I missing something obvious?
Hi, So I see terran Command Centres falling to Z and P runbies all the times in pro games, especially to banelings/zerglings. Often the same base would be taken, destroyed rebuilt 4-5 times in the course of a game. Why not simply invest a little more in static defences early beforehand and have 2-3 Planetary Fortresses stacked in the more remote bases in order to prevent this? Some advantages:
- by placing PFs carefully, one can create walls/chokepoints where needed
- place a single siege tank/sensory tower behind the PF wall, instead if out in the open
- PF splash damage doesn't harm friendly units, unlike other splash
- a critical mass of 2-3 PFs + tank together is hard to overrun
- even if 1-2 fall, there is little to no loss in mining time
- no need to rebuild the base, so no loss in build time
- fewer SCV losses: no more 15 workers killed in a single attack -> even less mining/building time lost
- if Orbital Command is placed to protect PC, the opponent has to choose between taking PF/tank damage while attacking the OC (that can lift last minute anyway) or travel further past the OC and attack the PF, but this way the OC survives and there's still no loss in mining time + mules available
- added static defences with no supply cap
- less need to move armies around to defend bases
- added deterrent so less enemy run-bies to begin with
It's expensive upfront, but so is rebuilding the same base 3-4 times+ 50 SCVs, and that doesn't have any of the advantages listed above. So why isn't more PFs a more common strategy?

When a low mass star like our sun nears the end of its life cycle, it sheds its outer layers of gas, forming a planetary nebula with a white dwarf at its center. When these outer layers are shed, what effect would they have on the planets orbiting the star?
Would the shedded outer layers violently strip away atmospheres, level mountains, scatter moons and ring systems, or destroy the planets entirely?
Would the added drag from the gas slow the planets down and cause them to fall into the white dwarf?
Would the reduced mass of the white dwarf cause the planets to drift away into space, even in spite of the increased drag of the nebula?
Or would some other fate await these planets?

I usually go for ling bane hydra - rule of one gass. But i saw the planetary fortress at was a bit thrown of so i decided to go muta and changed my mind to corruptor. But should i really have gone for either roach ravager or roach hydra viper?
