Pidyon Haben Puns

If you're a firstborn son and never received a pidyon haben, are you really a Cohen? Would you be not allowed to marry a divorcee? Could you work in the temple? Could you act as the Cohen in a Pidyon haben for someone else?

Below is the Dvar Torah I used at my son's Pidyon Haben. Thanks to /u/ajmarks for recommending the source.

Oruch Hashulchan, Yoreh Daeh, 305-35:

By a pidyon haben the Kohen asks: “What would you rather have: your son or the 5 coins that you’d have to pay to redeem him” and the father responds that he’d rather have his son and pays. It’s a strange question: What would I rather have, my son, or about $60 worth of silver?

The Kohen’s question is even harder to understand in light of the Rama, who says that if the father wants to give his son to the Kohen, he isn’t yotzei Pidyon haben - rather, he has to pay. So why is the Kohen even asking, if I don’t have a choice?

It’s also strange that this mitzvah is called “Pidyon” haben. Because redeeming usually means to switch the kedusha from an item on to money. For example, someone who is mekadesh something to the beis hamikdash can deliver it to them or redeem it’s value onto money and give that. Or someone with maaser sheini fruits can either eat them in Yerushalayim or redeem them onto money, which can be later used to buy fruit in Yerushalayim. But by pidyon haben what kedusha are we redeeming?

In mitzrayim, the bechorim did the avoda, meaning that the bechorim need to be set aside for Hashem and all their actions need to be done in kedusha. But it isn’t possible for most people to live like that. So when the father redeems his son, he is being taken out of that kedusha, so he can live a normal life.

Similarly, when the Kohen asks “Do you want to redeem your son or not?“, he isn’t giving a choice. He’s explaining why we’re doing the pidyon haben - and is asking: “Do you want your son to live in constant kedusha, and not be able to do anything mundane, or would you rather redeem him?”, and so of course, any father would redeem him.

Pidyon haben obviously goes by the mother. Did she have a C-section? Was it after a miscarriage? Etc.

But I realized the firstborn may be the first born son of the father.

That can’t be right but I can’t find a source. Any help appreciated.
