Ive listened to Tubular Bells and Hergest Ridge and absolutely love both - Hergest is my favourite.
what do you think? the original?
ive heard many say Ommadawn is their favourite so i am highly excited
Also, why isn't RTO on Spotify in the first place?
I really love the sound of these records/songs. Particularly that very open acoustic sound on guitars and the meditative / mysterious elements within the music. Have a hard time finding other stuff simply because Mike Oldfield is under the "classic rock" umbrella and Popol Vuh I discovered by luck thanks to Spotify. Help!
Edit: Here is the Popol Vuh song. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=s316I8euYuE&pbjreload=10
Hey - a quick Ommadawn impro/cover - Ommadawn was one of my favourite albums as a kid, and it became a masterpiece in my mind - and while playing with some cinematic drum samples today I thought it would be fun to weave my setup around the opening section (which contains the chords of the final build up section of side one of course) - it is not meant to be a slavish cover (although there are a couple of close sections) but an homage of sorts.
There are a few edits as the original jam went on for 55 mins! - so a couple of sections miss the 'development' as I was playing/programming bits in, especially the chordal arpeggios in section 2 ...

Update: It's available for preorder on the US iTunes Store.
I have listened to the new Return to Ommadawn twice now, and it's not really that good. I'm not one of these fans who think Oldfield shits gold and everything he does is amazing; far from it, Mike has done some terrible stuff, but RTO isn't terrible, it's just not really deserving of the title "Ommadawn".
Ommadawn is my favourite Mike Oldfield album, it's one of my favourite albums full-stop. Return to Ommadawn, however, isn't to Ommadawn what Tubular Bells II is to Tubular Bells. It's no-where near being the folk/Celtic/African/world music of its older brother; and it's kind of lazy. Instead of getting new vocals for a new "Ommadawn chant" towards the end of Part 1 Mike just used samples (albeit backwards and with other effects added) of the original, same goes for the On Horseback section, which wasn't exactly good on the original album. The uilleann pipes are gone, which were a huge part of Ommadawn's Celtic feel. Mike didn't use African drummers for this one either, preferring to play them himself (and not very well by his own admission). This whole thing of Oldfield locking himself away on his little tropical island and making music with no other input is making the music less than it's capable of being. Yes, the music is all very lovely, yes the musicianship is superb, yes Mike is extremely talented, but this album falls short of achieving what Ommadawn achieves and I don't have any high expectations for the upcoming Tubular Bells 4 either.
Had a look on tubular.net the other day and saw this:
>"Hello Everyone some news : Well today got to the end of Part 2 Return to Ommadawn. Most of Part 2 I am happy with just have to finish up the ending and then polish both Part 1 and 2. So looking to finish everything around my birthday mid May. It has been a wonderful experience and I have loved playing all the acoustic instruments. So just have to complete the final steps. All the very best from Mike" He subsequently said he expects to release it in mid-August.
Ommadawn is definitely my favourite MO album so I was thrilled, and somewhat stunned, to see that he's revisiting it. Thought I'd post it here in case anyone hadn't heard yet.
I discovered Mike Oldfield a couple of weeks ago and have been addicted mainly to his album Ommadawn. I like Tubular Bells as well, but there's just something about Ommadawn that makes it sound absolutely perfect to me. Specially the folk-y elements.
I've yet to find another album/song like it, though. So I've come here.
Would absolutely prefer instrumental, but vocals blending in with the music (like the vocals in Ommadawn near the end of part 1), would work too.
Just listening to Return to Ommadawn. What a beautiful album. I forgotten how much I love Mike Oldfield. This album just takes me back to the time I listened to hergest ridge and the original Ommadawn...
OK guys, this is a longshot, but I think someone can help me here.
The section of music in question is from 11:11 to 11:25 in this video of Mike Oldfield's "Ommadawn" :
https://youtu.be/jh9CsmpVya4?t=11m10s
The caveat here is that I really have no idea where I have heard this before, but I know for a fact I have heard it. It could be from another song, a movie, a television show...I really don't know.
My strongest guess is that it was sampled in a rap song I've heard. I believe this is the most likely solution, but again, I may have heard it being used in a movie or on a TV show, or sampled in a different genre of music.
It's a very distinct section of music though, so I'm hoping someone will recognize it and help me out. Thanks!
EDIT: Just want to mention that I have done my homework on this and the answer is not able to be Googled. I have listened to every song that Google tells me has a sample from Ommadawn and none of them contain this specific section.
