Myers-Briggs Type Indicators and ADHD

Warning: This is kinda long, but if you stick with it, you could learn something and it could be fun.

One of my interests is Psychology, and part of that is the Myers-Briggs Type Indicator. MBTI for short. Which attempts to paint a picture of a typical personality through four dichotomic areas of preferences.

Extrovert (E) and Introvert (I)

Sensing (S) and Intuitive (N)

Thinkers (T) and Feelers (F)

Perceptive (P) and Judgers (J)

A personality type can be described with their corresponding letters for example: ENTP or ISFJ with 16 combinations in total.

You can take an unofficial MBTI personality test here. https://www.truity.com/test/type-finder-personality-test-new

For the neurotypical individual it is somewhat easy to read the descriptions of each and come to a determination of their own preferences, but for those of us with ADHD who have a notoriously hard time with self-assessment, it’s not nearly as easy. Like ADHD, these dichotomies are on a sliding scale and not binary. I decided to workshop a merging of ADHD and Meyers-Briggs to add a little more to the equation and the highlights of personality types with ADHD.

Take a guess at your own personality type, or take the test and compare it to my description below. Let me know what your personality type is and how accurate it is to my description.

Where our energy comes from:

Extrovert – You love to be where the action is, and you love to talk to people. Meeting new people is always exciting, fun, and you talk to people very easily. You’re likely to cut someone off mid conversation to get your thought out in the open rather than risk losing out on the thought. People who don’t know you may perceive you as rude, loud, or annoying, but people who do know you may find you fun, bubbly, energetic, funny and the life of the party.

Introvert – Lets cancel those plans for the second time this week and stay in with a good book. Or ten good books. Either way, you much rather be by yourself then out at a bar. You’re likely to have deep interests and hyper focus on things for hours by yourself. Making friends is difficult, small talk feels like torture, and if you have to hang out with people it should be one or two at a time. Your friends share a lot of the same interests as you because other than what you’re interested in… You really don’t have much to talk about. You’re very likely to have thoughts mid conversation an

Myers–Briggs Type Indicator/16 Personalities is basically Horoscopes and Zodiacs for the "intellectuals" that are too snobby for peasantry
  1. Myers-Briggs Type is those 4 letter indicators aka, INTJ/ENFJ/INTP/ESFP, that determine the personality type of an individual.

  2. Horoscopes is based on the astrology, it uses the time, place, position of an individual's birth to determine that individual's destiny and overall growth or outcome.

  3. Zodiacs is based on the Eastern Lunar Mythology of the 12 Animals that represent the 12 year cycles, the Characteristics of the animals are then used to describe the luck, fortune, and personality of individuals born of that year.

Now, that I've educated you on the 3 types. Lets discuss.

Myer-Biggs, is a fun sociology test, I've done them in College, because they were assignments, (yes assignments, no I didn't take psychology to solely do this, my Business Professor asked us to do it.). Now the interesting thing about this is that every few years, your personality can change, not drastically, like if you're an "Extrovert" you won't find yourself becoming an "Introvert" in 4 years after you re-take the test again. So what's all this about? Basically, it askes you a series of questions, like If you were involved in an argument, you would try to resolve the issue at hand, Agree/No Stance/Disagree And determining how you resolved "each conflict" you would then be awarded with something like ENTP/Debator

And then you would read into ENTP/Debator and it tells you, "based on the questions and similar studies" you are most likely to X, perform Y, strive for Z, and then list someone like "Mark Twain was an ENTP".

Okay, I've seen many people take piles of Manure to diss the "Horoscope people" and say, "lol, the stars aligned in such a way that makes you an obnoxious individual." or that usual, "that's like totally what a Libra would do, and I'm an Aries."

And then you have some people who even include Eastern Zodiacs, being born in the year of the Rooster and having your Luck and Fortune on the low end, "you need to watch out for this year, great misfortune is coming, but if you act quickly, then you will survive the year intact." (its found in all Chinese Calendars)

Now, what's all this about? I've recalled back in College (like shit 8 years ago, fuck me) where people just fall in love with this 16 Personalities Test, and just like Horoscopes and Zodiacs based their new found "personality" as a Quirk. But the major difference? Well, this is scientific, and is backed by studies. they say. Dude, you're being sold the same BS. Its nothing more th

The Myer-Briggs Personality Type Indicator is not a complete or good measure of your personality.

It pains me that this pseudoscience personality quiz is so pervasive in our culture.

For something that has poor reliability, [validity] (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Myers%E2%80%93Briggs_Type_Indicator#Validity_and_utility), and virtually no supporting evidence to be the THING that some people with which some people define themselves.

Reliability: Even if you retake the test, your results may not be the same. Some people show differences after 5 weeks on retake. And only 36% of people show the same type after 9 months.

Validity: This one is more about careers. It basically says that personality types don't predict shit in terms of job performance. It's just very easy to administer and to understand so many companies use this as a basis for hiring.

Most people show some levels of both sides of whatever the type may be. I.E. Extrovert + Introvert, Sensing + Intuiting, Thinking + Feeling, Judging + Perceiving. Most people do both. Very few fall into the category of just one side of a factor. See below.

There's also the Big Five model which adds in neuroticism (emotionality) and HEXACO model which have similarities to each other. Both offer a better view of personality and both of which actually have research data behind them.

There's more models out there of course. The truth is that behavior psychology is not that well understood, and pop culture has just taken the most easy to understand one out there and made it viral.

So please don't take that INTF and think that you are simply "Introverted, Intuitive, Thinking, and Feeling". There's a high chance that you exhibit the other side of the factor based on your mood, how much sleep you got, the day and night, etc etc.

>"But I'm so introverted/extroverted!"

Yeah alright, this one has similarities across all behavior models. It's has to do with how reserved or social people are. This is also not a bi-modal curve where there's a clear, defined line splitting introvert/extrovert. So chances are, you're either leaning introvert or leaning extrovert. Very few are completely introverted or completely extroverted. There's many that fall in the middle and can be either one based on the circumstance and mood (ambiverts). Sometimes you can feel like being social and going to the that party. Oth

We need to talk about the Myers Briggs Type Indicator test and what it really means for most people.

Let's start this at the beginning, a long time ago in a galaxy exactly in the same place as our own, on a planet identical to our own there were some people. They were a group of people who had been brought together for a purpose. What was their purpose? They needed to solve a problem.

In this ancient time there were these giant entities called "corporations" and "businesses" that consisted of many intricate mechanisms and individual organisms that tried to perform those mechanisms as best they could. Some of them even spent a great deal of time and effort to create new mechanisms or to improve existing ones so that things could run more efficiently, thereby increasing rewards and lowering stress for every organism.

By this time most "corporations" or "businesses" consisted of teams of individuals who all worked together to help simplify things that were ridiculously complex by focusing on one specific aspect or one specific problem instead of having everyone just randomly trying to work on whatever they wanted which was, frankly, a mess. If you want to make money, if you want to go forward then you can't have messes. Messes hold you back.

Teams are great things but they do have one very serious flaw. That flaw is that people are only human, not all of them are perfect. Most people who worked within a team were happy to contribute as much as they could, they were dedicated to helping each and every one of their team get their work done fast and to discuss problems in order to solve them. Each person together can work to create greatness or to make everyone's live's easier. But then we have the problem. /sad trumpet noise

Some people are not team players, they do not want to work as part of a team, they care more about themselves and do not care for the feelings of others. These are the people who hold the entire team back, who make their team look bad, who nobody likes and nobody wants to work with. These are the people the MBTI system was designed to manipulate.

Yes, did you notice I used that word? Interesting. The Myers Briggs Type Indicator test is a personality test that people were told to fill out themselves and is designed to solve this team-player problem. Now many of you out there who exist above the level of the common ape can already tell why the system is flawed, or at least one of the major issues. But I digress. This test consisted of a series of questions, each one aimed at determining what "type" of person they were, what kind of pe

Discussion: Professor Snape on the Myers-Briggs Type Indicator

Some of you probably heard about the 16 Personalities Test.
Out of curiosity, I lately decided to try to tick the answers like I thought Professor Snape might answer them. It's a tricky thing since you need to answer it according to what you actually do/feel and not how you would like the world to percieve you or how you would like to percieve yourself.

I got the result of ISTJ-T - Logistician for Professor Snape, which puts him in one category with e.g. Geralt of Riva, Hermione Granger and Mr. Darcy.

Now I wonder: If you were to file out the test according to what you think our beloved potions master would answer it, what would your result be?
I'm not talking about the depths of psychology here, but it would be interesting on how we actually percieve Professor Snape and I would be very interested in possible variations.

Now there are discussions on the judging parameters of the test and it's accuracy among psychologists, but from my point of view, I could imagine it rather helpful when you're trying to write a character, to actually understand that character better, not only fanfiction but original stories as well.

So if any of you could spare 10 minutes, I'd be really interested in how you see Snape according to the Myers Briggs Type Indicator. Characterizations of other kinds are of course welcome as well.

/r/mbti is on fire after some users are banned for simply "not agreeing with the mainstream opinion" on the Myer Briggs Type Indicator personality test

MBTI. You either love it or hate it because it's as good as horoscopes. Why not get both from this thread? This was fueled when a few users were banned... on a personality test sub.

Thread: https://www.reddit.com/r/mbti/comments/aeubro/this_sub_is_fucking_joke/

For context, MBTI is a personality test that is 100% not scientifically proven and for many people, used for self growth. However, some users take it rather seriously and go by the books of how certain "types" are, what their weaknesses are, their strengths are, and how each usually behave. A few users were banned for what's interpreted as unknown reasons outside of being aggressive about their interpretations of MBTI.

Notable fire in the thread:

More argument about functions in MBTI that gets rather buttery: > [Maybe think a little? You are the one advocating 4 oversimllified but mostly inaccurate dichotomies. One of which is "T" for you. Te is fucking retarded, I swear. I say that lovingly because Te is my inferior, sweet heart T person. lol Why is logic so hard for "T"s lol] (https://www.reddit.com/r/mbti/comments/aeubro/this_sub_is_fucking_joke/edu61kc/)

Someone questions why the mods are banning users and comment chain gets wild: >[What exactly are the mods banning people for?] (https://www.reddit.com/r/mbti/comments/aeubro/this_sub_is_fucking_joke/edt3kdc/) >I was banned for defending dichotomies in my original account (dorkhole)

Some sass thrown about: >[So while you're ranting about this subreddit, what have you contributed for its improvement in content? ] (https://www.reddit.com/r/mbti/comments/aeubro/this_sub_is_fucking_joke/edt01wh/)

And for funzies, you heard it here first folks: >[Mods are gay] (https://www.reddit.com/r/mbti/comments/aeubro/this_sub_is_fucking_joke/edtjcc7/)

The Legitimacy of the Myers-Briggs Type Indicator

I am 17 years old and just took AP Psychology this past school year. I was the first kid in several classes to get INFJ which was intriguing, but also pretty disappointing because of how lonely it made me feel. Eventually, I found this subreddit and felt very at home with all of the relatable posts. At the same time, however, there was an underlying belief that this was just another bs broad generalization/personality reader that can apply to almost anyone (there’s a word for it but I can’t think of it). This was obviously a naive thought considering how much science has gone into MBTI.

Anyways, the point of this post is to tell a story that freaked me out and confirmed my belief with the whole system.

When it comes to relationships with the opposite gender, I do pretty poorly. People come to me every so often and fall head over heels, but I never feel like they are the right person to invest so much time into so I act distant or uninterested and that person disappears. This year however, a girl had a crush on me and I felt something different with her. She just felt right. She felt like more than some superficial high school girlfriend. I’m a cynical person so at first I thought it was just infatuation, but it’s been a few months and I keep falling for her more and more.

After about 3 months I thought of the MBTI, so I asked her to take the test to see if we were natural partners. She took it several times and kept getting ENTP (INFJs natural partner). This blew my mind. The fact that I have held off on a relationship for so long and the first person I really go for is my natural partner according to MBTI.

This story was long-winded but I figure I’ve been stalking this sub long enough and wanted to be a part of it. I hope everyone finds their ENTP. :)

Similarities Between Myers-Briggs Type Indicator and The Big Five Model

I was re-reading the extract of the Myers-Brigss Type Indicator, and got curious about what relationship exists between it and the Big Five Model that JBP uses in his approach.

Earlier, I concluded that the Myers-Briggs shows you the general aspects of your personality, and the Big Five Types Assesment shows you the individual aspects of it. As I kept reading the Myers-Briggs, I noticed several similarities between the descriptions of roles and how certain aspects of the Big Five affect you.

In this case, the Diplomat role tends to search for harmony and cooperation; this sounds just what somebody with high agreeableness (and a tad of neuroticism) would do.
