Hello! My name's Chase and I'm a freshman here. For one of my classes, I need to interview a Junior/Senior who's in a major I'm interested in. I would like to interview someone who is in Kinetic Imaging but someone in Arts Foundation would be fine too. I'd need to hold the interview either today or tomorrow, it shouldn't take too long.

I'm trying to get into the program, but of course, I need to start Art Foundation. Anyway, does anyone in VCUarts have any pointers/advice for an art student to get into the Kinetic Imaging program?
Is it competitive? What should my portfolio look like? What have you gotten from the program? Is it worth it?
Rigidity leads to inertness : The 2,4‐pyridyl‐disubstituted bispidol ligand L1 is a promising structural entry for the development of Mn‐based imaging agents. Thanks to its preorganized rigid structure, it provides exceptional inertness to the Mn2+ complex. MnL1 is monohydrated, has good relaxation efficiency for MRI applications, and undergoes rapid renal clearance when injected into mice. The 52Mn‐labeled radiocomplex could be obtained and was stable in biological media.
Abstract
The search for more biocompatible alternatives to Gd3+‐based MRI agents, and the interest in 52Mn for PET imaging call for ligands that form inert Mn2+ chelates. Given the labile nature of Mn2+, high inertness is challenging to achieve. The strongly preorganized structure of the 2,4‐pyridyl‐disubstituted bispidol ligand L1 endows its Mn2+ complex with exceptional kinetic inertness. Indeed, MnL1 did not show any dissociation for 140 days in the presence of 50 equiv. of Zn2+ (37 °C, pH 6), while recently reported potential MRI agents MnPyC3A and MnPC2A‐EA have dissociation half‐lives of 0.285 h and 54.4 h under similar conditions. In addition, the relaxivity of MnL1 (4.28 mm−1 s−1 at 25 °C, 20 MHz) is remarkable for a monohydrated, small Mn2+ chelate. In vivo MRI experiments in mice and determination of the tissue Mn content evidence rapid renal clearance of MnL1. Additionally, L1 could be radiolabeled with 52Mn and the complex revealed good stability in biological media.

The office was comfortably lit by outside light. The smartglass windows were opaque to anyone on the outside, reflecting any known wavelengths back into the office, preventing the interior from being shown, while letting in warm sunlight from outside. The windows vibrated slightly at a high frequency to prevent laser microphones from listening in as an extra little bonus. The windows even enhanced incoming light so that the light of the two moons at night made the office nice and cozy.
The office was comfortably appointed. The massive desk that doubled as secure workstation, several flat 2.5D screens on the walls, artwork, three holotank projectors, and nearly a dozen comfortable chairs on the side. The carpet was thick and rich, comfortable to walk on in shoes or bare foot pads. The lights were cunningly hidden in case the occupant didn't want to use the ambient nanite light.
It was late, past working time for most people. A glance out the windows showed that the majority of the taller buildings, rarely over 15 stories, were dark or just running maintenance and standby lighting. The streets were largely empty, the vehicles from the rush home after work already safely parked in garages and recharging.
The office only held four people.

He had served the Unified Civilized Council's peoples for three thousand years. When the C3 and it's collateral damage started he had sought out the forbidden to consult. The Herd Stallion. The Herd Matron. He did not fear their power, he sought their wisdom to understand where they intended on guiding the Great Herd.
He, more than anyone, understood that the Civilized Council was nothing more than a brackish swamp slowly drying away to salt plains. That in a hundred million years his people had managed to do little more than destroy star systems to feed an overwhelming appetite they didn't even understand.
He had watched the C3 War with interest. For the first time in the Council's history they weren't facing off against a species that had barely developed space travel and stellar class combat weapons with only a few systems for resources and manufacturing. Every scrap of information he could gather on the Confederacy pointed to thousands of systems, multiple species, heavy industrial capacity and capability, massive shipyards, research programs, and the infrastructure to prosecute interstellar wars.
While his peers and superiors (or those who saw themselves as his superior) just hand-waved away the eight thousand years of interstellar travel for the lemurs, Ru'udamo'o examined it closely.
It was doing a deep data dive on the Confederacy that he discovered a simple fact that the lemurs and their allies ignored.
The longest period of peace the Confederacy had enjoyed was an astounding 63 days.
The Confederacy was made up of aligned systems, not a single system under the rulership of the Senate.
Ru'udamo'o had found out that there were nearly 58 human stellar organizations withing the Confederacy. The Mantids had three. The Treana'ad only one. The Rigellian Suarian Compact covered over a dozen species, many with their own stellar governments owning multiple stellar systems.

The lemur held up its hand, opening and closing its fingers. Natraya could see that one of the protruding knuckles was purple and slightly swollen but still pushed back further than it had been. The skin on top of the knuckle was torn slightly and blood had oozed out before hardening.
"Damn, popped a knuckle," the lemur said. It slowly straightened the finger and then pulled on it, pulling the injured hand the other way. There was a crunching sound and the lemur gave a grimacing smile, then held up the hand, wiggling the fingers. It didn't move much.
"Yup, popped the knuckle. No damage to the metacarpal, I don't think," the lemur said. It slowly made a fist and Natraya could see that the middle knuckle was at the same extension as the ones on either side of it, where before it had protruded slightly out.
"Will you be able to continue the battle?" On'trak asked, cocking his head and looking at the damaged hand.
"Sure, it's just a popped knuckle. Been hurt worse," the lemur grinned.
Natraya nodded.
The lemur looked around. "OK, there's that feeling again," it said. It looked at one of the doors. "It coming from that direction and down, I'm not sure what it is."
"Could it be a trap?" Natraya asked.
"Good instincts," the lemur said. "Always assume the appearance of something you want to be a trap set by the enemy if you are in enemy territory."
On'trak nodded.
The lemur sighed. "I love this body, but without my harness and implants, I'm really stressing it," the was a growling, squealing rumble from the lemur's midsection. "And I'm starting to get hungry."
The lemur closed its eyes and swung its arms back and forth, the motion never having the hands go higher than the waist, and it kept lifting up on its tiptoes and dropping back on its heels.
Natraya had noticed that the lemur seemed to have trouble staying still, that it needed to be in constant movement.

Last year I decided I needed a new hobby, and I went all in—I bought everything I would need to learn cross stitch, embroidery, knitting, and crochet. Cross stitch and embroidery came easy to me because of the 2-D format. I used to do a lot of painting and sketching, and these crafts feel like a different subset of skills on the same plane. But attempting knitting and crochet just resulted in a lot of frustration. I have a hard time copying physical movements that I see. It’s like my brain can’t process how to replicate spatial positioning. I have the same issue if I’m trying to follow an exercise video, for example. So all of the lovely books I bought just ended up slammed shut in exasperation. I’m honestly thinking about paying for a tutor to physically move my hands for me until I get the hang of it (I’m a fast learner and learn best by doing), but I’d love to not spend a ton of money I don’t really have if at all possible.
I’ve decided to take things at a more reasonable pace and attempt only crochet this year (maybe I’ll tackle knitting sometime in the future). I’m really excited to learn and I’ve saved about a thousand beginner patterns on Etsy and Ravelry. I know there are a lot of YouTube tutorials out there, but with so many it can be hard to know where to start. Any ideas?

The Terran fleet that arrived in the Weaver system was relatively small; consisting of one dreadnaught, four battlecruisers, two missile frigates, and eight corvettes, along with several support vessels and troop transports.
They had spent a week in transit, with the voyage having been mostly quiet. With the exception of the pack of Void Wolves that had been trailing the fleet for the last three days.
The fleet had dropped out of FTL for about an hour earlier that day to "discourage" them from following any further. It would be unfortunate if the creatures were to bother the Weaver colony later, or decide to harass the fleet in the middle of combat.
"Discouraging them", had consisted of first locating the biggest, meanest looking one of the critters, and shooting it in the face with a kinetic round from the spinal gun of a battlecruiser; a lesson to the others that ships were not prey.
The creature did not survive the lesson.
However the creatures were either slow learners, or determined, and continued their approach. Since the point had not yet been made, the admiral had ordered the ship to target "the next biggest one".
It too, did not survive the lesson.
The lessons continued until the void wolf pack had taken approximately 50% casualties; at which point the remaining creatures fled, while emitting electromagnetic "howls" of various frequency.
Now however, the fleet was finally at the edge of the system and within communication range.
"Alright Silver, send a greeting and link us in to the Weaver's Battlenet, lets see how things are going" said the admiral.
"You got it boss" replied the AI.
The tactical display lit up with the words "ESTABLISHING BATTLEFIELD CONTROL, STANDBY".
A minute or so passed before he began to wonder what was taking so long. "Silver?"
"Keep your panties on, these spiders are weird. Even with the translation index Hool gave us, it's still hard to parse what they are sending" replied the AI.
"Yes. We've been in contact with them for over a century, and STILL haven't entirely perfected our understanding of the Weaver's language. Their spoken language is highly contextual, information dense, multi-banded, and, well, sort of "sung" to each other." said Ambassador Hool.

... keep reading on reddit ➡Hello! I’ve recently submitted my application to VCU, specifically VCU arts, with intentions of taking art foundations for kinetic imaging. I’ve tried to calm myself but it’s hard not to be worried about admission, as this is the only art school I can really afford to go to, yet I’ve heard the arts department for VCU is competitive. On a 4 point scale I have a 3.1 gpa weighted, and unweighted it’s a 2.94. According the the VCU arts booklet I got in the mail, the GPA is below average compared to other accepted students. However, I took the SAT and got 1210 which is above the average listed in the booklet. I’ve also taken 2 AP classes, 2D studio design (with a score of 5 on exam) and English language and composition(with a score of 3) which both meet the score requirements for being able to transfer to credit. I am also in state, and I’ve heard VCU favors in state students. I know acceptance depends on both portfolio and grades but academics wise I just want to know how I compare to other students that have gotten accepted in the past. Hopefully knowing where I stand will be able to put my mind at ease. Also if I do get accepted, do any of you have any advice? Something you wish you would’ve known when you came? Hope I see some of you in the upcoming school year!
I don't want to step on anybody's toes here, but the amount of non-dad jokes here in this subreddit really annoys me. First of all, dad jokes CAN be NSFW, it clearly says so in the sub rules. Secondly, it doesn't automatically make it a dad joke if it's from a conversation between you and your child. Most importantly, the jokes that your CHILDREN tell YOU are not dad jokes. The point of a dad joke is that it's so cheesy only a dad who's trying to be funny would make such a joke. That's it. They are stupid plays on words, lame puns and so on. There has to be a clever pun or wordplay for it to be considered a dad joke.
Again, to all the fellow dads, I apologise if I'm sounding too harsh. But I just needed to get it off my chest.
There has been a noticeable change when it comes to how Hollywood movies film action scenes which seems to be a sort of a response to all the complaints about the overediting and shaky cam that had been plaguing action films for a good part of the past two decades. While the emphasis on visual clarity was a welcome change, I wasn't really wowed by these new movies as much as others, so I decided to look into what these movies( John Wick, The Atomic Blonde, Dredd, Extraction, etc.. to name a few among this new trend) may be lacking.

Shaky cam and Rapid editing
Shaky cam and fast editing became increasingly popular when films like The Blair Witch Project (which also essentially revived the found footage genre) used it to effectively portray reality. Filmmakers realized that having this documentary feel to their films or just specific scenes helped create a sense of nervousness and instability in the viewer. It also proved to be a very valuable tool if one wanted to heighten the intensity or accurately depict the chaotic nature of certain events. The end result is that when used properly it made your films feel more immersive. If you and your cameraman were being chased by a zombie in a dark room, the footage would obviously end up looking like that. Unsurprisingly, these techniques were adopted by action filmmakers for their ability to ramp up the intensity and chaos, most notably the Bourne films. It also became a useful tool for capturing the traumatic nature of the action in war films, with the Omaha beach scene in Saving Private Ryan being a great example of this style being used to create a truly unforgettable sequence.
But as with any other cinematic technique that gets popular, it inspired numerous imitators who not only failed to utilize these tools properly but often used them as a crutch to hide poor choreography and even writing. Soon we had scores of films where misuse of shaky-cam and rapid editing lead to action scenes that were not only incomprehensible but often outright nauseating. There are probably a thousand examples of this being done poorly in films like Elysium, Taken 2 and 3(with the infamous fence jump scene that had 15 cuts in 6 seconds), and Hunger Games to name a few. CHAPTER 1: PREEMPTIVE STRIKE
The sound of claws scratching against the metal deck echoed through the cramped corridor as the Crewmaster made his way to the bridge, ducking under exposed pipes and bundles of electrical cables. This warren of winding passages was made for humans, not Borealans, his eight-foot stature requiring him to hunch over to avoid hitting his head. Their smell still permeated the vessel, but it was fading now, overcome by the scents of oil and alien machinery.
His furry ears brushed the doorframe as he emerged into a more open space, finally able to stand upright. Before him was a room occupied by half a dozen console banks, more of his kind hunched over before the glowing, holographic displays. They waved their clawed fingers through the projections, adjusting their course, and tracking radar contacts. The bridge was a little more homely than the rest of the ship. As the command center, the bare hull had been decorated with crimson drapes in the traditional style, the flowing fabric cascading from the ceiling to the carpeted floor. A large window wrapped around the room, occupying his entire field of view. The glass doubled as a monitor, displaying information in small boxes that the crew were moving around with gestures from their furry hands, the angular hull of the frigate visible beyond.
It extended into the distance like an artificial horizon, tapering into a dull point a good two hundred meters in front of them, the subtly raised conning tower giving them a fine view. It was broken up in places by the streamlined blisters that housed the ship’s railgun turrets, and the closed hatches of the torpedo launch tubes. The vessel bristled with weaponry, but it

Mithrax: Most fortuitous timing for them. To enter the council just as an era of peace is ushered in. Are they not a bit… inexperienced for such a responsibility though?
Yan: They are indeed a young race. It was merely a byproduct of the war that they were discovered at all. Had the Aarkadian fleet not made incursions into their surrounding stellar neighborhood we wouldn’t have bothered to make first contact for many more years. But when a sentient species is uncovered it is policy to make introductions, even if such a race is all but doomed to be devoured by the Aarkadians within the year.
Mithrax: We were losing that badly?
Yan: Oh yes, a colleague assured me that the war was not going well. Not well at all. His human friend told him of an expression for such a situation: “on the ropes”. I am told it comes from a primitive combat sport of humans called “boxing” and alludes to one fighter’s imminent demise in a short time.
Mithrax: A curious expression. And you feel it applies to the Galactic fleet?
Yan: He was quite adamant. The council had already begun preparations for surrender when the humans were discovered. There was talk of skipping the first contact protocols altogether, and allowing them to simply be overrun with no warning. And indeed the humans should have been overrun… but they are a strange species.
Mithrax: Do you mean to insinuate that the humans fought back against the Aarkadian Empire? Within a fortnight of exposure to the Galactic council?
Yan: Yes.. in a manner of speaking.
Mithrax: I was under the impression that race had scarcely left its own atmosphere. If the nets are to be believed, they’d only just harnessed a rudimentary form of fission, and fusion was only theoretical on their single world. FTL? Bah, it would be a hundred or more years before they achieved such a goal.
Yan: Yes I have heard all these same assumptions. But you misunderstand. The Humans did not enter the council after the Aarkadian Empire sued for armistice, but because of it.
Mithrax: Because of … how do you mean?

The main attraction for our 30th celebration is the new six-player activity, Dares of Eternity. The mysterious agent of the Nine known as Xûr has shown up to host the festivities and is joined by the strange but lovable Starhorse. There is a tear in the very fabric of reality that only Xûr can perceive. Now you must explore this unknowable space and face untold challenges for Starhorse’s entertainment. Only then can you claim the precious rewards. All of this raises more questions than answers, but even Xûr can’t offer up any explanations of this anomaly.

Blood trickles down Red’s face as she manically rams her forehead against any and all surfaces. Blinding white pain surges through her entire mind, but no stolen memories return. The sounds of war above her only intensify as she walks circles within her cage like a mad dog. She’s scared, what is there to do? These bastards know her so well, and yet she can’t recall a scrap of helpful information about them. Other than that they are insane warmongering cultists of her own species of course. She needs to remember how to fight them, how to beat them. People are dying… people are dying… they’re all gonna die…
“You’re gonna die.”
Red spins to see yet another one of her kind. But this one’s different, smaller and beyond familiar. A child… with red hair and piercing green eyes. The borders of this girl blends with the world around like a watered down stain of paint, shaking away any small aspect of doubt whether she is real.
Red staggers up to the bars, grasping at them with a drawn defeated sigh. What more can these people do to her? Haven’t they already made their point? What can be the purpose of this?
“Get… mad…” the child orders in a shaking tone through a shut mouth.
Tilting her bleeding head, Red narrows her eyes and grunts.
“You’re probably going to die anyway. So just… let go… and hurt them as much as you can.”
Red’s grip on the bars tighten, but her gut knots and twists in resistance to the temptation. She shakes her head in denial.
From the stairs erupts the sound of splintering wood and shouts of both her kind and not.
For a moment the girl flickers out of existence. When she comes back she is slightly older, dressed in what seems to be a basic, sharp uniform. Her wild hair buzzed short, eyes filled with contempt.
“They stole everything, and they still want more. No more*…* ”
Thick Terran arm muscles tense and flex causing the Iron bars to groan and quake. Red locks eyes with the girl, heart pounding, rage flooding.
“Noh… moa…” the Terran utters in a stained guttural voice.
The hinges to the door begin to shutter and buckle along with the meager locking mechanism.
The girl breaks a smile showing a missing tooth. Then she pulls a metallic bat out from behind her, resting it upon her shoulder.

As Nusantara has agreed to license key components of the Pahlawan ACS, the United African Army has begin production of the Mwangalizi INS system. At $10,000 per unit, the Mwangalizi INS will be a stripped down Pahlawan variant retaining the helment and HUD, electronics, power supply, underlayer, and LBV, and removing other components. Rather than the Pindad SS3 used by Pahlawan units, Mwangalizi units will utilize the Zastava M19 or its domestic clone, the AMBv1. The UAA hopes to receive 30,000 units by the end of the year, and ramp up production to 60,000 units annually thereafter, completing delivery by 2053.
To address the growing threat of enemy power armor, the Msumari-v1 grenade has been commissioned from Nakuru Arms. The Msumari is a 40mm grenade equipped with simple imaging IR guidance and a HEAT warhead- sufficient to put even the heaviest power armor down in a single hit. - The MSLv1 Super Tucano will see 72 new airframes modified with Tornfalk kits from storage in 2050, as a stopgap for the MSLv2. This more advanced variant, set to begin production in 2051, uses domestic drone components and features a Rafael Scorpius pulse EMP system to destroy adversary small drone units and disrupt enemy communications. 288 MSLv2s have been ordered between 2051 and 2055, at 72 per year.
- The OSMv0 Mfuatiliaji UAV will be a small drone analagous to the Turkish Bayraktar TB2. Capable of carring two Spike-NLOS ATGMs, a Rafael Scorpius system, or two pods of Msumari-v3 guided rockets- essentially a v2 warhead and guidance section on a 70mm rocket- this drone will be designed for rough field takeoff and landing, allowing it to be easily used by army units in the field. The weapons fit will make the OSMv0 ideal for cutting swathes through enemy small drones, eliminating high value targets, and generally harassing the enemy, while its ease of use will make it a major recon tool. Utilizing the domestically produced Rotating detonation engine, the Knobkerrie-105 boasts a mach 5 intercept speed in a relatively small missile package. Designed to counter aircraft, C-UAV, and take on counter cruise missile duties, the weapon is also being envisioned to take on C-RAM roles.
Comparable in size and payload to the AIM-9 Sidewinder, the Kb-105 utilizes a imaging infrared homing system to better track and defeat enemy systems and achieve a target kill with the munition.

The search for more biocompatible alternatives to Gd 3+ ‐based MRI agents, and the interest in 52 Mn for PET imaging call for ligands that form inert Mn 2+ chelates. Given the labile nature of Mn 2+ , high inertness is challenging to achieve. The strongly preorganized structure of the 2,4‐pyridyl‐disubstituted bispidol ligand L 1 endows its Mn 2+ complex with exceptional kinetic inertness. Indeed, MnL 1 did not show any dissociation for 140 days in the presence of 50 eq. of Zn 2+ (37°C, pH 6), while recently reported potential MRI agents MnPyC3A and MnPC2A‐EA have dissociation half‐lives of 0.285 h and 54.4 h under similar conditions. In addition, the relaxivity of MnL 1 (4.28 mM ‐1 s ‐1 at 25°C, 20 MHz) is remarkable for a monohydrated, small Mn 2+ chelate. In vivo MRI experiments in mice and determination of the tissue Mn content evidence rapid renal clearance of MnL 1 . Additionally, L 1 could be radiolabeled with 52 Mn and the complex revealed good stability in biological media.
