Am I a prison-hootch-chugging charlatan?

So, I started brewing mead about 1.5 months ago and I'm 9 1-3 gallon batches in. Everyone knows mead is for the patient, but I am anything but patient. However, I really fuckin' love mead and cant afford $30/bottle. Thus, I focus on quick meads with 10-14% abv, attentive nutrient regimens and healthy pitches. Superkleer helps a lot, too. But everything I'm reading is saying +1-3 months to be drinkable.

First mead was some 10% apple slice/lavender/clove/lemon thing. Bottled the bitch 1 month after pitching and it tastes pretty damn good.

I did a nice cyser and some blackberry fella and had em tasting good enough to be bottled 3 weeks later.

Then had a tropical bastard as well as Joe's Quick Grape Mead. Funnily enough, Joe's quick grape is actually tasting a bit more rough than the others. The tropical one is fucking great. Its 2 weeks old.

Now, for the coup de grace: Did 2 batches of BOMM last week - one with star thistle and one with orange blossom. I subbed the wyeast with dry Voss kveik (I know that was the main point of BOMM, but I have celiacs and cant use most liquid yeast).

Anyway..

In 1 week, they're both pretty good and drinkable. Especially the orange blossom. Fuck my booty, it's divine. I would be happy racking it off, giving it a day with superkleer and bottling it. Granted, I can smell the heat from the alcohol and you can taste they're young, but they still taste good. I understand everything I make can taste GREAT with age, but I'm pretty happy with everything tasting GOOD as I slowly drink them while they age.

So my question is: is the term "drinkable" pretty conservatively applied, or am I a block-headed neanderthal tossing back swill?

Or am I just One-With-The-Bee as a prodigious mead-maker destined for greatness and can do nothing but produce delicious quick meads?

Hootch Suppositories

Hi, I’m currently taking 10 mg diazepam vaginal suppositories 2 times daily for nerve pain. It costs almost $1300 per year and out of pocket.

I bought 3.5 grams of Blue dream CBD Flower GTI. I have a silicone candy mold where the holes are 10 mg. I’m going to decarb it in my Ardent FX and infuse with coconut oil but I don’t know a ratio. Does anyone know how much coconut oil to use? I would like to make a big batch.

The diazepam suppositories are compounded into tiny pearls. Any help would be appreciated.

Thank you.

First Hootch

Former homebrewer turned lazy. Honestly I was shocked by the results. I siphoned some off last night and it was delicious.

- Apple & Eve Organics Apple Juice

- 1/2 packet of Fleischmann's RapidRise Instant Yeast

- 2 Tablespoons light Agave Syrup

- 10 days (although I'm going to let it keep going)

Lessons learned:

- Next time I will pour off some juice so there is more room for the krausen (yeast foam party).

- Setting up the blow off tube like this is noisy compared to a traditional airlock. My wife complained it sounded like a dripping sink so I stuffed some napkins in the top around the tube.

- I didn't take initial gravity because I thought this would suck 1000 asses.

Poncho Tarp Storm Pitch: Ridgeline Hootch with Lifters

I added head and foot lifters to a poncho tarp to make an easy to set up pitch with good protection. The setup uses elastic cord to shape the tarp with lifters, and uses an elastic guy line to allow for easy entry/exit. No poles required as long as you have a place to tie a ridgeline.

My latest homemade hootch

this 2-litre bottle was made using dried beet powder, orange peels and ginger. simmered it for a couple of hours then added the sugar and when it cooled down i added the Lavlin ac118 yeast. i then cold crashed it then freeze distilled it (cryo concentration they are also calling it) the two litres left me with those two bottles you see on my crowded sink. this has been sitting since the summer and i just gave it away to my sister for Christmas it had a wonderful smell i am now finding out the key is to let it sit for months before trying to drink it one thing is it gets rid of the yeasty odour and seems to develop the flavours. i had calculated the sugar to reach a 14 to 15% alcohol after fermentation but i don't generally bother with calculations other the sugar. i am loving this group thanks to all of for being here

I had a year sober from the hootch, then I started again, not more than about 6 months ago. I dont have a purpose anymore.

Cold turkey is hard, I cant stand AA, Im embarrassed to go back to Life Ring, and I just cant take it anymore. I haven't had a positive in my life since the doctors fixed my heart through 3 heart surgeries in 2016, My depression worsens every day. every NIGHT even. everything is worse at night time. Theres just a point in life i think i missed where I just really shouldn't be here anymore and i really lost my own purpose. I lost my drive in life when i had that heart surgery. I just almost feel like i really was supposed to die and now im just here. with no fucking purpose. I dont even fucking masturbate anymore. yeah the opposite sex still turns me on but finding a partner is usesless. especially when im on disability. 2016 I spent more time in a hospital bed than I did in my own. the year prior i had a few Bowel Obstruction surgeries. As much as I love where Medical Science has brought us, I wish they would have just let me go. I dont have a drive anymore. I didnt have one before i started back on the hooch either. No, Im not going to kill myself, I just really cant help anyone anymore. and thats where i feel fucking worthless. Marphans Syndrome is what they diagnosed me with as a child. they did a blood test to confirm it about 5 years ago, 33 now. Im doing NOTHING for this world, im a selfish piece of shit and all i care about anymore is when the next time my head will change from this shitty fucking depression i just cant break. i tried with out the beer, ive tried with, everything just feels terrible, all the time. While I do know alcohol brings my emotions up a ton, i had a whole year of sobriety where i still felt the same. I just cant escape this. I dont think I ever will. Sorry about my grammar.

Results of my first batches of Hootch (Or "why you shouldn't deviate too much")

I've been reading through this reddit page for a while, but I decided to set out mostly on my own to start with, without a lot of outsider advice. I focused mainly on making kilju for the lowest possible price. Here's what I found just by experimentation. Most of this has probably been posted somewhere already, but I thought this would be a good introduction to the sub, and a way for me to give quick advice to anyone making their first batch.

If you use fruit, be ready for a strong flavor: I don't know that this is the case for all fruit, but in one of my most recent recipes I added about half a lemon during the initial fermentation process. The result wasn't bad - it tasted like alcoholic lemon water, as the best comparison, but the lemon flavor became increasingly strong the further along I got into the bottle, to the point that it tasted outright sour (or tangy, if that's the right word). It wasn't a "my stuff got infected" flavor, but a strong lemon-sour, if that makes sense.

There's a reason you shouldn't deviate: I decided to try a batch using some cheap brown sugar from QFC and a bit of honey to (hopefully) add flavor. Spoiler alert, it didn't work - and tasted worse than the basic kilju from table-sugar I had made the week prior. It wasn't undrinkable, but it was a lot worse. I, in my infinite wisdom, though I could do it better than the people who'd come before me - I was wrong. If you're going to experiment with new things, either seek advice from more experienced hoochers, or go into it expecting disappointment. The basic "table sugar & water" recipe is probably the most reliable of what you can make if your aim is to get drunk. If you don't mind weird flavors and concoctions, then by all means experiment all you want - but if you want something semi-consistent, stick to what's known to work, especially as a first-time hoocher.

If you want it to taste good, use juices: Since the end-result will resemble the base ingredients in flavor, if you want something that's at least slightly tasty, go with some kind of cheap juice as the base. I personally recommend apple, since my experience so far has been that even a single-week old apple-hooch tasted pretty fucking good, but you can go with whatever you like the taste of. If you're just trying to get drunk, you can go with the sugar-water formula that's so tried & true, but if you want it to not taste like piss or have some actual flavor, just use juice. It's not that much more e

I believe I have found myself in the clutches of the hootch and I am struggling to cut back.

My introduction to drinking was a culture of work all day and then go out and party and get hammered at night. And then get up and do it again. Summer camp employee. This was back when I was about 17-18. It was just during the summer and was no big deal. But now, I am soon to be 25 and drink about a pint of vodka a night. I am what I think is called a high functioning alcoholic. I travel all over the country each week and usually work 50-60 hours a week. Yet I somehow manage to get plastered pretty much every night. Any tips on ways to cut back? It is starting to stunt my ability to grow but I struggle to not just swing into a liquor store before my hotel. I want to do something about this before it messes something up. Cheers!

Irish Channel hootch

So I got this batch of pineapple hootch goin right now. Thought I’d share. /u/downtownjmb asked and it’s good.

Got a 2.5 gal jug with a pour spot at Wally World yesterday.

Get 2 pineapples and cut em up! Everything but the bottom and top. Then take your 2lb bag of brown sugar and put 75% of it in there. Next I crush at least one whole jalapeΓ±o with the flat side of a knife and drop it on in! Also fun stuff like ginger can go in there. Then you just let the heat and humidity take over along with your natural yeast friends floating in the air! Should take at least 48 hours. You can let it go longer to make it stronger. Goes great over ice or with tequila like I’m doing. I have this recipe weighed out to grams if y’all want to try your own variations. Love y’all and stay safe!
