A list of puns related to "Historical Period Drama"
I just finished Goodbye my Princess a couple of days ago and I hated it. I liked the beginning, but couldn't understand why the writer hated his own characters. I'm in the mood to watch historical dramas these days and was wondering if there's a MUST-WATCH, INCREDIBLE-TOP-SHOWS I haven't watched yet.
I want to learn more about the monarchies, so not just any period historical drama. I'm more interested in the palace courts and tidbits/shinanigans that happen there.
Shows I watched/watching that could remember:
So it seems I'm not really into extreme fantasy or time-traveling, although for me there are exceptions like Moon Lovers. I also noticed the Chinese do a slightly better job portraying GRAND historical dramas where they cover a lot of politics and scopes, although it just might be that China at the time had more power. Korean historical dramas are still beautiful and I actually watch them more, since the plots and production feel more solid to me than Chinese historical dramas, but I watch both so no restrictions there.
Hope this helps. Now plz share your lists :D
I’ve found myself only really liking historical tv and movies. Whether they’re accurate or not. There are a few shows and movies I love that were made in a present day setting, but the majority of what I like is not. I came to realize this because I’m trying to get into Yellowstone and I just cannot get into it.
Would love some recommendations. Especially good Austen or other 19th c adaptations? And more.
A few reference movies in this vein that I love… Metropolitan, Barry Lyndon, most of of Coens and PT Anderson, Howard’s End, Three Women, Gosford Park.
Thanks in advance!
Nearly finished with Downton Abbey, which overall I’ve enjoyed but have found it to be a bit repetitive. I’m open to any historical era. I like seeing the costumes, how people lived at the time (I know I know, a lot of shows aren’t super accurate) and some well written romance is always a plus. Side note, I couldn’t get through more than a few episodes of Reign (a bit too cheesy even for me.)
I've probably seen 100s of them. Mel Brooks has some great entries in the comedy genre. I would love to hear others favorites and maybe find something I haven't seen before. Which are the most accurate? For me that is part of too. I love to research the film for accuracy. Some times read the source material. WWII is my sweetspot, but I do others also. My two, well three, are the Band of Brothers series and the companion mini series from the 1980s Winds of War, and War and Remembrance. I have mild dyslexia and mild ADHD (mostly gone in my adulthood) so long form reading is difficult for me. If I'm really interested in something I can hunker down and do some reading. So I often work backwards and read the books after I've watched a particular film or show about an event. Another big one for me is Downtown Abby. What a great show if you are into History! Very subtle about some stuff, and of course right in your face with others.
Hello
Does anybody know of any good modern radio dramas set during major historical periods such as World War II or the Roman era?
I know of 2 at the moment called Bonhoeffer, the Cost of Freedom from Focus on the Family Radio Theatre from 1997 and Ben-Hur from Focus on the Family Radi oTheatre from 1998.
I'm looking for ones with good sound quality, so none of those 40's and 50's made ones. I'm looking for some with stereo sound and good quality voice actors, hence is why I love the Bonhoeffer and Ben-Hur ones so much.
Does anybody know of any other good radio dramas made in the past 40 or so years set during eia major historical time?I tend to lean more towards those with British actors, it seams to me like the Brits heavily embrace audio dramas.
Okay, I have seen a few including Mr. Sunshine and My Country: New Age... What other recommendations do you all suggest?
On another note, I did not want to make a separate post but I also would like recommendations on good buddy dramas. Not romance but more so bromance or good friendships with any genders.
I have Netflix and Viki/Rakuten.
thank you in advance!
Hi, I am looking for a really good period drama story to read. Anybody know if any?
A lot of fans of Outlander are fans of period dramas and historical dramas, so the mods have given me permission to share about r/PeriodDramas now that it’s under new management!
For a long time, Reddit didn’t have a proper general community for all period dramas and historical dramas, so I’m hoping that fans of this genre can finally can enjoy a place to get the latest news, and discover shows and movies they never knew about!
It’s especially useful for discussing period films since movies don’t tend to have their own subs.
We have...
This sub is growing, so even if you subscribe now you will be able to come back to a nice, active community in the future.
I keep a tab on the latest entertainment industry news so you’ll probably even discover upcoming shows and movies you didn’t know about.
Also, I absolutely do not wish to take away from the conversations at this sub in any way! Definitely keep your Outlander discussions here at r/Outlander I just know that fans of this show love watching all different kinds of period dramas as well.
Hope to see you there! 😊

maybe those of you who watch them can recommend me some great ones?
In 2021 with the headlines I see today coming out of Baltimore, The Judge couldn't even order the wire to be set up. Street level drug crime is not a priority anymore.
I've also noticed a change in the opinion of the characters among some of my friends as well. Early on, I remember cheers when Kima shitkicked that kid for pushing the cop, now the comments are more that she is as an abusive snitch.
Jimmy is seen less as a crusader and more of just a jerk.
Rather than see redemption in Prezbo, they shake their heads at the thought of anyone being kicked out of the police for incompetence but allowed to become a public school teacher.
I think in 20 years the redeeming of Bubbles will still be moving, but the rest of the show will be harder for future viewers to get into.
The Philippines isn't the first place that you think of when you say period places. But in actuality, we have a lot of films and tv shows about that. So here are a few I highly recommend.
Historical Biopics:
Heneral Luna: This is one of the more well-known period pieces from recent years. It depicts the leadership of General Antonio Luna, a famously hot-blooded general during the Philippine-American War. It has been praised by critics, praising its cinematography, writing, acting, and plot. You can watch the whole movie(with English subtitles) here. Honestly, I really enjoyed the film because it really showed you that great leaders aren't always visible at first glance, sometimes what they believe in is reason enough.
Quezon's Game: This tells the true story of Philippine president Manuel L. Quezon's plot to shelter German and Austrian Jews escaping from Nazi Germany pre-World War II, while also dealing with a relapse of tuberculosis. I was surprised at the story it conveyed because not many knew about it. The director did a good job of telling the story.
Goyo: Ang Batang Heneral: The sequel to Heneral Luna, this tells the story of the second youngest Filipino general, Gregorio Del Pillar, and chronicles his life until his death during the historic Battle of Tirad Pass in the Philippine American War. I enjoyed it because it had the same lessons as its prequel.
Bonifacio: Ang Unang pangulo: This film tells the story of Andres Bonifacio, the first president of the Philippine revolutionary republic. This was what really started me on Philippine biopics, a true story with poignant values.
Ang Larawan: A period piece and musical? SIGN ME UP! This film is based on the 1997 stage play, Larawan which in turn was based on the 1950 literary play A Portrait of the Artist as Filipino by National Artist Nick Joaquin, this story is set in a house in the capital city of Manila just before World War II. As for my reason why I includ

Marked as 'TV', but documentaries and films may apply.
I mean, I'm pretty open. I'm a huge history buff! I loved The Crown (binged it all faster than I'd like to admit), but I loooove having a bit of sword-fighting action and big burly muscles bludgeon each other in these (loosely-based) "historical" pieces as well... I mean, fantasy shows like Game of Thrones are cool and all, but being able to research sagas, monarchies, read all about what scenes are "based on", and being able to find documented background - that's just all pretty cool to me.
WWIL?
Hello, I recently am interested in the '18th century'-ish stories, but I'm not sure which books to read that fits with this. I like Pride and Prejudice, little women, but not Bridgerton though (saw the show and don't want to read the books). I especially like a girl-focused type of story. I haven't read Jane Eyre yet, so that's on my to read list.
With slice of Life, I have trouble explaining it. I like relaxing, yet thought-provoking 'lessons' about life.
I mean books like:
before the coffee gets cold
the midnight library
the housekeeper and the professor
almond
the traveling cat chronicles
Eleanor oliphant is completely fine
They tend to be translated Japanese and Korean books, but it doesn't have to be that way. I'm not sure why, but Haruki Murakami books doesn't fit my taste.
Could someone help me with recommendations?
Today we (me) tend to think of the lives of monks and nuns as a one way street: you join the church and you never leave.
In the series, which are based on a book with a similar name, set in mid-late 12th century Sweden, Arn is first sent to live in a monastery as a child to fulfill a vow made by his mother. Algot has two daughters, one of which also lives in a nunnary, but Algot sends the younger child to replace the elder. Arn leaves the monastery as an adult, only to to have him and Cecilia sent back as punishment for having a child outside of wedlock. They are sent for 20 years, after which they are allowed to leave the church again.
Is this in-and-out church life something that happened in 12th century Scandinavia, or is it just a fictional device invented by the author?
The more twists the better, romance movies are fine too, not very picky. Just something captivating with a good soundtrack
I’m wondering if there’s any historical anime or manga that takes place in Ancient Europe. Looking for something slow-burn, but I’m open to anything. I’m cool if you have a really good historical anime that takes place in a different setting. I’m mainly just looking for something slow-burn
I really like Versailles (2015-2018) covering the reign of Louis XIV as well as Maria Theresia (2017-ongoing) in which we can see the austrian succession crisis. And I could also Isabel, tv show about Isabel of Castile and Ferdinand of Aragon What about yours?
This is practically unheard of. Africa has a rich history of empires, kings and queens. It would be a lucrative and informative production.
There are so many stories and myths that could be dragged out 80 episodes on any streaming service.
As a young black woman I see how the African American community is becoming more Afrocentric. And the world more aware of black issues. This would be a great way to show our history is more than just Jim Crow and Slavery.
The production would create thousands of jobs. Basically, the African Version of the Hengdian World Studios. Think about it. Thousands of years of ancient African hairstyles, fashion, music, and art on the big screen. That would be so hype.
But my question is, how do you all feel about diving into this unknown territory of storytelling: Ancient African Empires? It would have to be historically accurate.
Just look up African kings and Queens. There are many stories to tell Besides the usual Egyptian history, there’s Timbuktu, stories of amazing war generals like Behanzin and his 5,000 female army. (Seriously research,to much to type)
I’m just saying black history is more than magical negro helps white person, or slave movie, or really sad and super messed up hood story.
Not saying these stories should not be told but. Black art/film should be more than struggle in America. Or it shouldn’t always be a social lesson slapping you in the face every 30 seconds.
We continue to make breakthroughs in different genres every year and this is one more genre that should be enforced.
Let me know you thoughts please world. Everyone of every race, gender, age, or religion. If you love film and history thrown your two cents! Into the well that is Reddit forums..

It was about a girl who played piano beautifully but she was poor she lived with her dad in a small village and fell in love with a rich guy in like Italy or Paris or England and she had to hide her appearance at the end but her lover recognised her. So like they disguised her as a nun at the end and she’s playing piano in a church I think maybe behind a confession screen thing and her lover is watching her but he recognises her and I think the book ends after he does. There was an apartment thing where she taught him to play piano. There’s a balcony scene too I’m pretty sure where someone was pushed off or someone tried to push them off. I appreciate all the help you can give me!
