Book about a boy watching a herd of sheep?

I read this book for school in the 8th grade. My memory is that a boy had to take care of a flock of sheep in a valley for a whole summer by himself. At one point there is a flood and it washes his wagon away and all the labels come off of his cans of food so he doesn’t know what meal he’s going to get next. Those are the only details I can remember and it’s been difficult to google.

TIL the collective nouns we use for animals (gaggle of geese, herd of deer etc.) mostly come from the Book of St Alban's published in 1486. It also included terms for professions such as a melody of harpists, a sentence of judges and a superfluity of nuns. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Boo…
