Totally not a homework question, I swear. After hearing his public works being honored and blamed for decades now in all manner of books, articles, and documentaries, I think it's an important answer to get about some very proximate history that also has implications on the historic change of urban neighborhoods and how we deal with city planning.
One of the older recriminations is that the visual blight of the expressways lowered property value encouraging middle-class whites in New York City to leave for Long Island or other parts of the Tri-State suburban area. Home resale value and the real estate market does not seem to have been as prominent an issue for homeowners in the 1950's, especially for many who were first-time homeowners in the midst of mortgage repayments. On the other hand, blaming white flight on increasing inner city crime is an explanation I somewhat doubt as the "crime epidemic" didn't really hit record numbers until the mid 1970's and early 1980's well after white flight was documented.
Do we have any primary sources which attest to Robert Moses' two expressways being the direct cause for people wanting to move out of New York City?
This was my first time on the Five Boro Bike Tour (totally embarrassing given the decades I've lived and biked in NYC) and wanted to share a few reactions. I was in Wave 1 which may have shaped some of my experience:
- Overall: I thought it was very well-organized with volunteers and support at the right locations (even on the treacherous expansion joints on the FDR).
- Riders: Most of the riders rode safely but there were a few that were right on people's tails or blew by me (and I wasn't riding slow). That seemed to be the cause of several accidents. Yes, I know you shouldn't stop quickly, but people do when they drop their phones, break a chain, etc. I had two people pass so close to me at speed (without any warning) that had I even slightly adjusted my direction to avoid a pavement issue, we would have crashed.
- Route: I loved riding on streets through the neighborhoods - maybe because I love NYC architecture and culture. Would have liked a longer section in the Bronx given the lack of bike infrastructure there. The FDR and Gowanus Expressway were interesting but feel no need to do them again. I would have preferred more of the route through Brooklyn on local streets.
- Highlight: The Verrazano-Narrows bridge was both a highlight and frustrating. I spent time at the top looking over the side and thinking how easy it would be to add a bike lane ($$$ I know, but very doable) and how f-ing obstinate the MTA Bridge and Tunnel is.
- Festival in SI: The festival left much to be desired. Got a beer but I'm not paying $8 for a pretzel that looks like the same ones sold on the streets. They really needed better food options.
All in all, would I do it again? Absolutely. You'll see me there next year, though I'm not sure about making it annually without some route changes.

Most likely from overbearing mother or mother figure, but could also mean lack of maternal influence, perhaps she abandoned family for someone else, or exposed as a “cheater”. Resentment. Shame. Family relatively well to do- assumption that SK is exceptionally familiar with Brooklyn, Queens and Long Island may suggest extended family or multiple homes to live in, work in, or own. Catalyst Theory: Deep seated rage against women, sex workers. While I am not in any expert position to state unequivocally, I do believe killer is a sexual sadist with possible homosexual or homophobic proclivities, with psychopathic leanings, a lack of empathy, with a strong foundation in logical self preservation. Death by strangulation appears to be the leading cause of death and this is not a quick process, as this could take several minutes to complete. The time it takes to strangle someone requires strength and conviction and most likely an emotional rage to “silence” is the trigger. Dismemberment could be either to dispose over a large area to avoid detection or it could be the culmination of his initial cathartic process. I also believe this killer is highly self aware, above average intelligence, with more than a rudimentary understanding of LE and technological procedures and capabilities.

First of all, dad jokes CAN be NSFW, it clearly says so in the sub rules. Secondly, it doesn't automatically make it a dad joke if it's from a conversation between you and your child. Most importantly, the jokes that your CHILDREN tell YOU are not dad jokes. The point of a dad joke is that it's so cheesy only a dad who's trying to be funny would make such a joke. That's it. They are stupid plays on words, lame puns and so on. There has to be a clever pun or wordplay for it to be considered a dad joke.
Again, to all the fellow dads, I apologise if I'm sounding too harsh. But I just needed to get it off my chest.
