My step dad is now 64, always been strong and in great physical health. Mentally, it's a lot harder to pinpoint, but I think recently he had fallen into a mild depression (not working, trying to build a business, etc..). No known medial conditions, he was not on any meds either.
He's a little odd at times, especially when it comes to eating. I don't live with them, but I know they don't eat very well and balanced. He also drinks a bit of alcohol daily (bit of beer, bit of wine, no liquor).
Last month, one day, he started to vomit often, even blood at some point. Was admitted to the hospital and his stomach was hemorrhaging. That is now under control, but my mom goes to see him several times a week and she tells me they put him on valium / Diazepam because he was starting to be aggressive. My guess is he didn't want to be where he was. Ever since, his aggression has escalated while on those meds. I am aware of the side effects and how it can lead to confusion, delirium, memory loss, etc...
The thing to note here is that he never showed signs of anything remotely like this. He was coherent even when the paramedics came to pick him up.
At any rate, today my mom tells me that the psychiatrist thinks it is Korsakoff's syndrome. They did a PET scan and found nothing.
To be honest, I am baffled at this and I immediately think it is simply the meds he is on that are causing him to panic and really exacerbate his fears. I read about this syndrome and people are administered vitamin B, sodium and thiamine.
Read this somewhere else on Reddit:
> It's looking like my relative's condition was more related to side effects from medications; doctor's diagnosis was atypical dementia, and has taken steps to reduce medication and increase supplementation of thiamine and also sodium. Apparently being on several different medications robs the body of sodium, which may induce delusions.
At this point, I don't know what we should do since he's been in this state for 2 weeks now with no signs of improvements.
I suddenly bled out 3 units of blood in the toilet, which resolved just as suddenly. I am waiting on test results for a capsule endoscopy, have had a GI check the stomach and colon without finding anything.
The thing making me suspect Crohn's is that I have suffered from stomach cramps after meals and this seems to follow a flare up and remission cycle.
However I have looked for information on the Web and what I read seems to imply that rectal bleeding is only associated with Crohn's in the colon.
Does that seem like a possibility?
My brother has been undergoing dialysis for kidney disease for some months now and for some strange reason there are traces of blood in his stool. He has spoken to his doctor about this and the doctor said it could be gastrointestinal bleeding. I have read on different forums that this could be a side effect of haemodialysis or it could be as a result of the kidney issue- there really isn't a general consensus on the cause of this but going by what I have read on various websites, it is a situation common occurrence in dialysis patients, Some health forums say certain types of antacid can help reduce the bleeding. My question now is this - Has anyone else had this experience? if yes, how did you handle this issue. I hope to get some response here.
Hello everybody, First and foremost thank you for your assistance on my previous topic of feeding my dog a bland diet. She has recovered nicely and is finishing up her antibiotics today and pooping normally. However, a new issue showed itself this day. She will urinate freely but followed by some blood. She is on her heat but this is abnormal from past heats. Could this be related to the gastrointestinal issue she has recovered from? Last week bleeding from mouth and butt and this week this :-( I am frightened and at work which is no fun. Has anybody experienced this? Google says could be a UTI or blockage of sorts. I am tapped out financially and am now unable to afford rent already from the last bout but her health is more important.
Female, pit bull About 9 years of age She just had full xrays and blood work done last week too. Would the xrays of caught a urinary blockage?
So here's my history:
I'm a 20 y.o. male, got appendectomy at 14;
At 19 I started feeling an odd, pressure-like feeling in the lower right quadrant (near the scar of the appendectomy);
Started worrying a bit too much about it, going to the bathroom more often too;
Had bright red blood in faeces;
Asked doctors for colonoscopy, all clear, did upper endoscopy, all clear, did capsule endoscopy, only showed nodular lymphoid hyperplasia of the terminal ileum, doctor said it's normal for my age;
Fast forward to now, started feeling the pressure again, mostly when lying down sideways, goes away when I press the lower right quadrant (I feel as if I dislodge a part of the intestine back to its place, whenever I do this -- which sounds kind of like what an adhesion would do? I don't know).
Anyways, ever since starting to feel that pressure again, I keep going to the bathroom more often. Today my feces seemed "rushed", started with normal color then more to the end they were with green stripes (bile?) and a bit of blood.
My conclusion: it could either be that the increase of me going to the bathroom triggers some hemorrhoids that were never found in all the exams I did, or since the feces come more rushed, only then is the blood visible.
I need advice. Should I ask for an MRI or something? I can't stop thinking about this.
