Exactly what the title says. I have read extensively on the Roman Republic and the time leading to Nero’s demise. But now I want to dive deep into the time between Galba and M.A. I have read a lot of Tom Holland and Adrian Goldsworthy.
I declare myself Roman Emperor. Anyone who disagrees with me can fight me for it!

Nero, Domitian and Commodus all have something in common. They were the last of their respective family to hold the title of emperor. Nero was driven out and proclaimed an enemy of the public when Vindex and Galba were being praised by the senate. Domitian was killed in a plot by his freedmen and some even say his wife was involved. Commodus was likewise killed in a similar manner.
But when you look at Domitian’s death and Nerva’s appointment, you will notice that nowhere in the entire empire did you have some governor snap and declare himself emperor. Everybody was cool with Nerva.
You don’t see that with Galba and Pertinax. Although many people respected them; you had two schemers who felt that they shouldnt hold that office. Namely, Otho and Laetus. Otho was in Galba’s circle and took advantage of his kinship to bribe the guards and take possession of the empire while Laetus and the praetorians organized an auction between Sulpicianus and Julianus.
However there was no praetorian insurrection when Nerva was appointed, no jealous governor, no ambitious prefect or family member. Nerva was just willy nilly accepted by everybody.
How come people revolted against Galba and Pertinax but not against Nerva? Was it just luck? Careful planning? Financial compensation?
