[MILESTONE]Squeezing the Extralegal Economy

Corruption post 2/10

The Economic Times

February 1st, 2023

New Delhi

Today India released a new budget with little changes from the previous year. Eased tensions with China and Pakistan did result in a slightly smaller military budget. However, there was one major change. As a part of the government’s continued fight against corruption the Centre has turned its sights on the extralegal sector. India’s extralegal economy is large, employing more than half of Indian and making up over 25% of GDP. However, decreased regulation has made a dent, but the government wants to go further.

The 2023 budget brought significant changes to the corporate income structure. These changes were made to encourage entrepreneurship and growth as well as significantly decrease the extralegal sector. The most major change is a significant tax reduction for micro businesses. Microbusiness, those with less than 5 crore turnover and less than 1 crore investment will see their tax rate slashed to 10% from 25%. This is a part of the government's further effort to entice informal businesses to register as formal businesses. Most informal businesses are small, family run operations that remain informal due to tax and regulation costs. While much work has been done on the regulation side, further tax cuts will greatly increase the appeal of the formal sector.

Hernando de Soto Polar commented on the new development in an interview β€œThe moves of the Indian government over the last few years have been promising. The reduction of the informal sector is quite simple, it is a simple matter of making the benefits of formalization greater than those of the informal economy. The benefits of the formal economy are access and protection to the legal system, which has improved dramatically in India and continues to improve as a result of large investment and greater access to FDI and exports, which India has also made progress on. However, these benefits must outweigh the costs of regulation and taxes. The Indian government’s moves to slash needless regulations and cut taxes combined with the improved benefits of the formal sector are sure to put India on that path towards reducing its informal economy. This is an important step as formal businesses are more productive, have greater access to capital, and most importantly it reduces crime. When hundreds of millions of Indians are forced to work in the extralegal, informal sector it normalizes breaking the law which inevitably leads to mor

[NEWS] Special Convention of the Extralegal Branch of the Politburo

Chairman Phuc has called a special convention of an extralegal branch of the Politburo, assembling one member of the Politburo and two closely aligned allies in the state governry.

Those assembled are;

Che Thi Ngu, Governor of Cambodia

Sinee Nik, Politburo Member for Foreign Affairs

Tieu Binh, Governor of Laos

Chairman Phuc has proposed codifying this into the legal code, although to avoid state meandering and a return to semi-feudalism he is wary of granting state governors extra power, and recommends that they instead voluntarily drop their positions in the state governry, and adopt positions in the Politburo.

The meeting has been called regarding the (once again, perhaps semi-feudal) importance of granting titles and duties. The logic behind this has been that certain members of this council have unique abilities and sets that distinguish themselves from the rest of the upper political echelons.

Che Thi Ngu - Has been recognised for extraordinary efforts in space technology in the Cambodian state, and advancing technology in general.

Sinee Nik - Has been recognised for unique economic development and cooperation with countries in the Middle East.

Tieu Binh - Although relatively new, has been identified for an expertise regarding China, and an internal drive and dedication to Phucist reform.

The proposed appointments are;

  • Che Thi Ngu - Politburo Member for the Bureau of Science (replacing Phan Xuan Dung)
  • Sinee Nik - No major change
  • Tieu Binh - Politburo Member for the Bureau of Infrastructure (replacing Badawi Agong), with potential for a possible secondary job as an Internal Expert on Chinese matters

This convention should also serve as a chance for proposals for further economic and legal reform within the MU. In addition, the upcoming war plans may be remodelled and Chairman Phuc seeks to devolve this power (/u/colin_000 , /u/ForestChapel) to allies.

Hopefully our work will find truth and be fruitful.

Hail Phuc!

At its height, just how wealthy and powerful was the East India Company? Did it enjoy any extralegal privileges? What is the closest we have to a modern analogue?

The EIC almost seems to have been a state within a state, operating with unique (?) privileges. It had its own armed force and territorial possessions--even the former is close to unthinkable for a 21st century Western company, let alone the latter--was the EIC sui generis?

Description:

Your Fixer sends a file with a short bit of explanatory text: "Get a load of this, but at least they've got money -- and yes, they're not kooks, they check out." Checking the file, it is a video file. Not trideo. Video.

A high-backed armchair faces a roaring fireplace in a lushly appointed room. At low volume, majestic music plays -- swelling horns, clashing cymbals, and the like. From behind the chair issues a baritone voice, an announcer's voice, though one suffused with wealth and culture.

"If you are viewing this, it is because you have been identified as a person of strong moral fibre."

The fireplace scene is replaced with a sequence of feel-good vignettes, as Good Samaritans stop purse snatchers, help old women across the street, et cetera.

"A righter of wrongs, a champion of the unfortunate, the doom of evil men.

"A paragon, if you will, of the metahuman spirit."

The voice is silent as the music moves to a chilling minor chord. Laughing figures in a corporate boardroom toast their own success, and a man in judge's robes smiles broadly at an attorney in his chambers.

"There are some of those that think themselves above the law."

A Knight-Errant patrol car arrives in front of a sprawling estate, sirens blaring, only to be turned away at the gate -- the officers inside downcast as they turn off their lights and drive away.

"Powerful men, with powerful appetites, who prey upon the underclass of society."

The fireplace returns, as the chair swivels to face you. The brooding music yields way for hopeful and heroic tones. The man's features are obscured by shadow, but his steepled, gloved hands are clearly visible as he leans forward.

"Together, we can stop them. As righteous men with the correct talents and means, we can give a voice to the powerless in the face of such tyranny. We must send a message to their oppressors: this can not stand."

He leans backwards in his
