A list of puns related to "Extemp"
So, Iβm in a really weird situation. I started speech doing written events like Oratory and Informative, and switched about a year ago to extemp on a whimβ¦ I did well immediately because my limited preparation speaking skills are naturally top-notch (not bragging, just trying to show where my real issues lie). During normal tournaments I can do well simply because my delivery and humor are enough to break and often place top 3 β that being said, postseason is approaching, which means that content is about to become WAY more important.
My biggest issue in extemporaneous is content. I simply donβt KNOW enough background to answer a lot of questions β if I get a question I do know, my analysis is strong and I can pull off a good speech in 30 minutes. But too often it feels like there are just topics I have no idea how to answer.
How can I quickly build my background knowledge and get my content skills on par with my speaking skills?
I started speech this school year and have mainly been competing in extemporaneous speaking. It's so much fun learning about different topics, but I can't seem to remember all the dates and sources. Are there any tips that make memorizing details of articles easier?
What are some extemps with high level content that are widely avaliable?
Hey yβall, Iβm competing to get my second TOC bid and I need some tips to make my speeches really stand out (in a good way). This is my last chance of the year to get a bid, and it is a finals bid. Any tips are appreciated, I am not sure how I managed to get my first bid but I really really need a second one!
52 seconds. That's how long my speech was, and half of it was me being silent because I was trying to come up with stuff to say. I'm really horrible at this, and all of the other novices seem so much better than me even though this is a first for all of us. I really don't know how to even fathom extemp, do y'all have any recommendations regarding what I should do?
Sooooo I've been the only person from my school who does extemp since my friend graduated in may. Coincidentally, I also procrastinated keeping up to date and filing articles for...a long time. I really need to get back in the habit of it but I just dont know where to start. What are your extemp habits? Also how can I "catch up" on the past few months. Dont get me wrong, I keep up to date and generally stay informed but I dont have the nuanced knowledge needed for extemp nor the sources to back me up in round. Please and thank you
I have a tournament tomorrow. Please help out a hopeless debater.

Extemp Central has started posting new questions for 2021-2022 and is also bringing back some old features like news quizzes and R&Ds. Just wanted to give a heads up to people who double in debate and extemp.
Hello all, my name is Davi. I am an Extemp Coach and a former competitor. I've only officially starting coaching recently but in that time I was able to grow a local school of competitors with no experience all to national qualifiers. I also coached a client to nsda sems this last season. I don't market myself as someone who will be the deciding factor as to you breaking to nat finals but I do know I can add tons of value and help you succeed. With that being said I am very affordable as I hope to help as many of you one on one as possible. Please reach out through a PM if you are interested!
NSDA really went βlol, jk neg, weβre just fuckin around. Hereβs a win.β
What the hell are they smoking
So far the three theories that my group has come up with is the New York Times called a couple angry parents called and they saw the amount of rage from the students I think the most likely one is the New York Times and then the second most likely is parents
Anything helps from how to stand to how to talk any tips would seriously be great
Hey all. Does anyone know if they've released the official round topics for IX and USX at NSDA? I know in the past they released what the questions in each round would be on, but I can't find it.
Thanks
Hi!
Some extempers on this subreddit might find this helpful:
Three-time national finalist Christopher Maximos is running a free virtual seminar at 6 PM CST tomorrow as he delves into what makes an effective introduction.

Hi all, this year was my second year in debate and Iβm going to be competing in speech in a few weeks. I think in the future Iβll want to compete in informative speaking but for now since itβs on short notice, Iβm going to do extemp. Except, Iβm not the most well versed on current events so does anyone have any speaking and prep tips? Should I do impromptu instead? Any help appreciated. Thanks!
If you watched today's USX and IX finals, or just want a general summary of what happened there, Extemp Central has posted recaps of the rounds with the views of two-time national USX champion Jacqueline Wei, national finalist Tanner Jones, and USX final round winner Logan Scisco.
So the round 0 start time is 10:00 but extempers have to draw thirty minutes early. Does that mean the check in time is pushed back thirty minutes to 9:00 or is there no extemp check in?
I tried to sign up for the extemp institute, but they literally haven't sent out the payment info and camp is in three weeks. Did this happen to anyone?
Hello,
My name is Anne and I'm currently a senior in high school. This is my fourth year of doing extemp. I have finaled at Peninsula and the University of Wyoming high school tournament and have written some articles for the Extemper's Bible. Lately, I have found myself with a lot of time on my hands and a desire to give back to the community. If anyone is interested getting help with extemp, I'm willing to meet with you remotely.

They say LPs are the scariest event but Iβve never met anything scarier than the existential dread and fear of not meeting expectations. Not to mention, the ensuing ego death stemming from an untimely realization of your own mortality in the middle of an Extemp speech.
Thereβs something unintutively soothing about the structure of an Extemp speech. The cadence in speech pattern and steady flow of citations that is so wonderful.
Even if you give a speech youβre unhappy with, thatβs ok. Extemp is an event you can always improve on. You can always keep getting better. Like a snowball picking up more mass as it spins down a hill. Be the snowball, pick up so much mass that you TRANSCEND snow. DONβT be a snowball. Just be ball.
So when returning to todayβs question, we find that Extemp is the analgesic of speech events. Maybe recognizing and evaluating your mortality mid-way through your third point is a good thing. To continue that evolution as a speaker, you need to evolve as a person.
Just a reminder to the community that Extemp Central will start its regular posting of IX and USX questions per week this Monday.
Hi everyone, I'm a debater looking to try out the world of extemp speaking at the upcoming Harvard Forensics tournament. I was wondering if anyone could walk me through what that might look like online. I know they're 6 debaters in a round, but how does that work? Would we all listen to each other's speeches?
I took a look at the NSDA guide but wasn't able to figure out speech times/how the draw exactly works, so if anyone has answers to those two questions or knows where to find them, that would be much appreciated.
Thanks so much!!
Hey, so I was looking on the NSDA tourney website and they have an event called Extemp Debate. Can anybody explain to me what the times for each speech are and the rules? I think the "prep" is similar to regular extemp, but I don't know how the debate portion is executed.
Thanks!
(by the way, it's not on any of the NSDA handbooks or procedures doc)
Hi! I currently do extemporaneous speaking and was wondering how to take it to the next level. Any tips would be appreciated :)
Does anyone have any tips on how to remember sources in Extemp? Iβve donβt really have trouble with data just the names of the sources.
Anyone else getting screwed super hard by these resolutions????? Wtf is this Iβve had to fight a losing battle every round
Other than a 30-minute hiccup during the 4th round, Yale was extremely professional and timely. They genuinely tried their best to make sure everything ran smoothly, and they were very cool. Thank you Yale.
As many of you already know, Penn and Harvard will be occurring on the same weekend this year (2/12-15). Since the option of attending both was off the table, I was wondering whether the TOC qualifications for Extemp are the same in both tournaments. I'm getting conflicting information online, with some websites saying that bid qualifications are based on the number of people there, whereas other sites are saying that they are always quarterfinals or finals. I was wondering if anyone had any knowledge regarding specific TOC bid qualifications at Harvard and Penn for Extemp and if anyone could advise me on which tournament would be "easier" to get a bid. Thank you in advance.
I just did extemp for the first time yesterday, and I saw that there was someone in extemp prep room that didnβt have a computer, printed articles, magazines, anything. The guy didnβt even write anything down; he stared at his question for 30 minutes with some practice. The guy won first place in extemp. I mentioned this to my speech coach and he said that he probably made up sources.

Edit: I've gotten a couple questions asking can they still sign up if they can't make the whole day. The answer is absolutely!
Edit #2: even if you donβt do extemp please spread the word to extempers you know, complete novices welcome!
Does anyone know how many rounds of extemp debate occur before elimination begins?
I need an Extemp coach to prep me for NSDA nats. I can do online or in person (live in MD). I can also send batches of videos with scans of outlines.
PM if interested.
Hey!
Tldr is the title.
Explanation:
Current medical school applicant, never did speech but admire it greatly. So anyway, a bunch of medical schools are using this new horrible thing called VITA as part of apps this year. Essentially you're given an interview style prompt, a minute to prepare, and 3 minutes to answer while they record you. I'll know the broad categories ahead of time, but not the questions.
I immediately thought of my HS friends that did these speech competitions and was regretting not doing it too, so I'm reaching out to you guys for your best tips, tricks, and practice plans. I'm willing to devote as much time as it takes as I get one shot at this and it goes to a ton of schools, but realistically will have to complete this in the next month or so.
thanks so much!
Iβm not funny and I need help
