I undergo electroconvulsive therapy on a monthly basis. AMA

Hey. I was diagnosed with Bipolar disorder twelve and a half years ago at the age of 22. I experienced my first bout of psychosis in 2017, which was treated with medication. I had another psychotic episode a year later which lasted longer and didn’t respond as well to medication, but I eventually returned to baseline. In 2019, I had another psychotic episode that landed me in the hospital for 2 months. The doctors tried a long list of medications, none of which worked at all. Eventually, they decided to try ECT after talking to me and my mom. I was better in a matter of days and have been doing ECT every four weeks ever since. Ask me anything.

Electroconvulsive therapy

Anyone want to share personal experience, good or bad? I’ve tried multiple medication last five years and nothing have worked for the depression part. It’s so bad right now and asks if I would like to be admitted but I declined because I have two dogs.

To the point, ect has been brought up on the table for about a year. A doctor in that field is calling me next week to talk about it. Freaks me out…

So I’d like to know how other’s experience.

Anyone have experience with electroconvulsive therapy?

I filed for an increase after starting ECT during a hospitalization this summer, I didn't see anything in the mental health section of the knowledge base about where Ketamine/ECT/TMS fall into the rating guidelines if at all. Just wanted to see if anyone else out there had any experience with a similar situation, thank you.

Electroconvulsive therapy and me

Has anyone tried and/or had any results with ect or ketamine?

My psychiatrist is leaning this way due to my β€œinitial small improvements when starting anti depressants” to going back to baseline. I also have ptsd.

I’ve tried so many meds more than a dozen for x amount of months/weeks. My memory is absolutely horrendous. I’ve gained a lot of weight and this is due to being on seroquel previously and polycystic ovarian disease. I can’t lose weight which also causes a lot of depression.

Anyway, my current meds are Wellbutrin, venlafaxine (she wants to try 450 but idk if I can do it anymore honestly), prazosin, lorazepam, diclofenac, trazadone.

I’m kind of a potato rn figuratively and literally. I’m sad. I don’t want to shower. I sleep til 2-5 pm, then don’t sleep , have nightmares, wake up a lot at night (sleep study), don’t want to move, just want to eat and sleep really. I can’t watch tv cause I can’t focus. I get flashbacks although I don’t know if that’s what I would call them more like it’s happening in front of me for a split second or two seconds and then I’m very bothered. It’s like why am I even here? My life is literally nothingness right now. I’m a fat sad pig and used to be pretty and happy. I’m just looking for an alternative before giving up completely honestly.

Has anyone ever had experience with electroconvulsive therapy before?

My appointment is in 8 weeks time. I just want to know if it is effective in anyway shape or form. I don't want to be attracted to men. I feel so guilty. My parents spent so much of their money trying to find a way to get rid of it by counselling and group therapy. There was a period of time where it worked for me but then I relapsed back and thenmy parents didn't want to speak to me anymore. I just want it to go away or to have no attraction to anyone at all. It's caused me major depression. I found a registered clinical psychologist who's willing to treat my depression with ECT, but in terms of my attraction he didn't say anything about it. I want to make my parents happy and for them to see I'm trying to change. I have tried every form of counselling for it to go away and this is my last resort and I just want to know if it'll work.

Any research into electroconvulsive therapy for tinnitus?

To me, it seems ECT would probably benefit tinnitus sufferers and actually reduce the sound, but I can't find any research one way or the other. The (speculative) thinking with ECT for depression for example is that it supplies a large excess of energy to the brain, stimulating connections between somewhat apart neurons that couldn't exist otherwise because the brain is a low power organ that only feeds signals to direct neighbors. (Low power compared to electronics) When these new connections are made, the neuroglia and other non-main neurons work to bring these new connections closer together.

So in a depressed brain, strong pathologies that have a person going from wake-up to depression can be interrupted by novel pathways, giving the person a chance to rewire their brain. ECT is like a mini-reset button on the brain, but it's also why too much ECT is directly correlated with some memory loss.

Taking all of this into account, we currently think that tinnitus is a phantom ringing caused by some interaction between any neuron in the pathway from a hair cell to the auditory cortex. If the problem is the neural connection just receiving the hair cell gone bad, then ECT may not do anything. But if the problem is in the brain, perhaps it could benefit. Thoughts?

ECT (electroconvulsive therapy) experiences?

Anyone on here had ect? How did it affect you? I’ve had four sessions and am starting to notice some changes but not very positive ones. There’s the memory stuff, I constantly feel like I’ve forgotten something really important, but I also feel extremely anxious, like I could have a panic attack any minute, and really dumb. It’s like my brain is on slow motion, I’m having a really hard time even just writing this, the same with test messages and even just holding a conversation, like I just can’t get the words in order. Is this normal and does it go away? Also would be nice to know if ect helped any of you? I’ve been diagnosed with severe depression since I was 13 or 14 (now 21), so I basically do not remember a life without it and, this might sound really dumb but, I’m worried that if this works its gonna change my whole personality. Even my boyfriend said he’s worried I wont like him anymore if this works. So I would really appreciate any advice or stories, experiences etc.
Also I know you’re not supposed to use alcohol or any other intoxicating substances while going through ect, but like how soon after is it safe to start using again? My doctor said four months but that sounds like a really long time out of a 21 year olds life. Of course its a small price to pay for a healthy mind but still.

Have you or anyone ( depressed) tried ECT? electroconvulsive therapy

I have a brother with severe depression and anxiety. He has been like this for over a year, on meds that do not seem to be doing anything at all.

Recently i was on a video chat with his psychiatrist and we agreed my brother should be in a treatment facility where he can be observed and treated . I brought up the subject of ECT and the doctor agreed he ( my brother) could be a candidate for ECT while at the hospital treatment center.

This depression seems to come and go every 2-4 years , some years not too horrible. This recent episode is one of the worst i observed in my brother in about 30+ yeaRS.

I actually recall when my brother needed to be hospitalized about 10 years ago for a 45 day stay. There we met another patient who was severely depressed. That patient had just started ECT treatment. The before and after was very remarkable. He came back to life, eyes full of energy, talkative, etc. I believe after a week or so , that patient was released and went back to live with his wife and children.

So have you ever tried ECT and what is your opinion?

Electroconvulsive Therapy (ECT) as a treatment for depression

I've witnessed many claims that just one isolated session of this controversial treatment has provided instantaneous and long lasting resolution of depressive symptoms in populations with major depressive disorder, aside from my own anecdotes, there is strong evidence in the literature which supports ECT as a strong clinical intervention for anxiety and depression, it is not known exactly how it works but some theories attribute the benefits to an increase in BDNF. Has anyone here received this treatment and would like to share their experience?

Mom won't take me to my electroconvulsive therapy because it is "inconvenient."

I am fresh out of a 2 week stay in an inpatient psychiatric ward for a suicide attempt. It was not my first episode. I have treatment resistant, chronic, major depression and have since I was 13 (am 21 now.) Electroconvulsive therapy (ECT) is also known as electroshock or shock therapy, and it is nothing like what you see in movies or TV. It is done under anesthesia and muscle relaxants. Patients are not conscious. However, because it's an intense treatment, it's used as a bit of a last result when other interventions such as therapy and medication don't work. It also takes place very early in the morning (6am-8am).

I have been suffering for years and survived 2 other attempts. Part of the reason for my depression is childhood trauma brought on by, you guessed it: my entitled mother.

She has never ever taken it seriously. She has mocked me and never supported me. She never helps with rides to appointments or anything. I thought maybe this time would be different. I cannot drive because of the anesthesia, and I need a ride to and from the hospital. I thought maybe since it was a "real" medical procedure (in her eyes) she would be more willing to help. Nope.

"I'm not waking up at 5am to take you to the hospital. I don't need to go to work till 9 and there's no need for me to get up that early. It's inconvenient."

?? Geez. It's not like I was asking to go to the circus. And how inconvenient do you think it is for ME that I'm so depressed I need my brain shocked?? Luckily I have friends who are taking time out of their lives to help me with this. But jesus christ. I hope my mom doesn't need rides to her appointments when she's elderly and I'm the one who will suddenly be "inconvenienced."

EDIT: Holy cow I've never gotten this kind of response on reddit before. Thank you very much everyone for the kind words and advice. Here's some additional info:

-My mother is absolutely a narcissist. She adopted me and then kicked me out when I turned 18 because I came out as transgender, then let me come back a year later for fuck knows what reason but I was homeless and starving sooo. She tends to dangle threat of kicking me out again over my head whenever we have any disagreements, even something small like me leaving clothes in the washer before I leave the house.

-I'm not close with any other relatives because my mother has them wrapped around her gaslighting little fingers. We also live a bit far from them.

-I can't use Uber or Lyft because the clinic will onl
