I'm trying to understand the cost difference for a foundation on a slope vs flat ground. The soil composition in the area is dolomitic limestone. The slope seems very gentle. It's a low precipitation area (~10in). Is this a 1k or a 10k or a 100k cost difference?

Can I use pickling lime instead of dolomitic sand/limestone sand?

I have a bare root gigantea arriving soon. I read that Mexican pings prefer alkaline soils and I was going to add one of the above mentioned sands but none of the places I visited had them in stock (or they were extremely fine). The only ingredient listed on the pickling lime I have is calcium hydroxide. Can I use this to add alkalinity to my mix of sphagnum moss and perlite?

[ask]Almost every building, wall and structure in Jerusalem from ancient to modern times is made from local dolomitic limestone called Jerusalem stone. Are there any other cities with such architectural uniformity?

Nice examples of what I’m talking about here and here. I cannot say that I have been to a city with as much uniformity, maybe Paris with it’s Hausmannian buildings but there still seems to be a lot of diversity among the building materials and types of buildings especially off of the main boulevards. The reason for the uninformity is that it’s the law that every building in Jerusalem be faced with local limestone, the modern law dates back to the British Mandate but it has been a tradition for thousands of years since it was a way for the city to demonstrate it’s wealth, as limestone was a valued commodity in ancient times and most cities had to pay a lot of money to import it.

Limestone & dolomite. Are Z4 #0.1/#0.2 better than X4 #0.1/#0.2?

Do you think newer Z4 are better than X4 because of sandblasted lobes on limestone/dolomite (quite smooth rock)? What are your experiences? Z4 seems to have a softer metal and a better lobe texture that increase friction.

Help! Need some info about contacts between Limestone and Dolomite.

Is it possible to have a conforming contact between Limestone and Dolomite, when the Limestone is overlaying the Dolomite? Any help is greatly appreciated. Thanks!

EDIT: Added Image which I should have done originally

The Limestone layer is the Kiln member, and the Dolomite is the Bird Rock member (darker grey color). The contact is represented by the two red lines.

Limestone vs. Dolomite Identification

I am restoring some family property to a more natural state in Missouri, near the Missouri River just an hour west of St. Louis. One of the habitats that I am taking a special interest in is a glade, seeing as it is a very unique habitat that Missouri has an abundance of. Currently, I an making plans for native grass and flower seeding in late winter, but have ran into a problem. I am woefully uneducated in geological information, and glades are categorized by the rock they are on top of. The glade is on a bluff overlooking a creek, and there is some exposed rock faces around and in it. I am not on the property currently but will be in the next day or so. What kind of steps can I take to identify the rock? Preliminary internet research tells me the only good way to identify it is through a HCl test, and while I can manage that, I would prefer any simpler way of identification. I guess all I am asking for is directions to a good guide or some telling features that separate the two. Thank you for the help!

Why is dolomite more conductive than limestone?

If calcium is generally heavier and more reactive than magnesium, why is dolomite less resistant to electric currents than limestone? Is this due to the structure of their respective molecules? Both metals have the same number of valence electrons but I understand that dolomite has more molecular surface area.

What would a party do with ample supply of limestone, ruby, pyrite, and dolomite?

My party is about to find a myconid colony in a cavern that has lots of these minerals. A few things to explore, some side quests, gain favor of the colony so they help with the next step, etc. The caverns will have veins of these minerals running through it. I'm certainly not a chemist or geologist, but I know some of these minerals are used in landscaping - which would help explain the myconid colony using them. I expect them to freak out about the ruby vein.

I usually give non-traditional loot like fine carvings, expensive paintings, rare woods and minerals, rare pelts, etc. I even gave them a "sticky rock" (rare earth magnet) that they still haven't found a use for.

Help with mineral identification: limestone vs dolomite??

OTHER than HCL acid testing! haha...had to get you here somehow :)

Everyone knows the acid test, but if I'm looking at a mixed, small, hand sample under a 40x scope...what is the best way to help visually determine which is which?

I'm currently working in the Bakken and am curious how other people help discern the two. No one out here (mudloggers OR geo's) care how the drilling sample is identified, just that it's in "zone." I want to know how to better determine the two or any visual tendencies versus the other. Help? :)

Any and all help is greatly appreciated!
