Todayβs Doodle celebrates the first woman to become a doctor in Belgiumβ Isala Van Diest. On this day in 1884, a government decree went into effect that allowed Van Diest to practice medicine in Belgium.
Isala Van Diest was born in Leuven, Belgium in 1842. Her father was a doctor who owned a medical practice and her mother was active in progressive, feminist organizations. Van Diest made the decision early on to take over her fatherβs practice, marking a departure from gender conventions of the era. Unable to enroll in medical school in Belgium due to gender discrimination, Diest left home to study in Bern, Switzerland, where she became the first Belgian woman to graduate with a university degree in 1879.
After a short stint in a British womenβs hospital, Van Diest shifted her focus to opening her own practice, but many societal and institutional obstacles hindered her progress. Belgium finally began to allow women to formally study medicine in 1880, and in 1883, Van Diest graduated as a doctor of medicine, surgery, and obstetrics. Following years of working in a womenβs refuge hospital and advocating for womenβs rights, Diest at last opened her own practice in 1886.
In honor of the 100th anniversary of International Womenβs Day in 2011, the Belgian government issued a β¬2 coin in Van Diestβs honor alongside Belgium's first woman lawyer, Marie Popelin. In Brussels, the street of Van Diest's former practice was named in herΒ honor in 2018.

Flemish Government (List of measures)
Translation from VRT article:
The city of Diest is going to carry out additional research on a possible PFAS contamination at three locations in the city. In the meantime, local residents have received a letter with precautionary measures they should follow, such as not drinking well water. "There is no reason to panic," says the alderman for the Environment.
After the soil contamination in Zwijndrecht at 3M, other locations are now being investigated for PFAS contamination. Diest has had OVAM investigate three locations: in the Schaluinstraat, a site on the Nijverheidslaan and the old fire department site on the Verversgracht. And there are indications that PFAS is present in the soil.
"The sites that we had indicated where there is a possible PFOS or PFAS contamination due to firefighting exercises in the past have been investigated and the results are now in," says Alderman for the Environment Rick Brans (Open Diest). "The results show that additional research is needed in those places. To be clear: there is no reason to panic, but there is a reason to carry out that additional research. We will have to wait for the results of that investigation to see how to proceed with this."
Local residents have received a letter with precautions they should follow, such as not drinking well water. Watering the vegetable garden and eating homegrown vegetables is also not a good idea at this time. There will be an information meeting on Friday, January 21.

I've seen people describe themselves as "Christian Diest" and I still can't wrap my head around what that means. From what I gather, it's someone who holds the core beliefs of a diest, but still studies the Bible and holds true to it's teachings. That doesn't make you Christian though. What makes you Christian is whether you believe in the divinity of Jesus. So a Christian Diest seems like an oxymoron.
I'm not just asking because I'm curious (which I am), but I'm also considering making a character in one of my fiction stories a Christian Diest. I can't do that without understanding it first.
I am getting an aesthetic procedure in January, doctor explained to me I won't be able to exercise for around 2 months and I will be most of the time sitting down since I won't be able to walk properly. I am a bit scared because I have a tendency to gain weight easily, are there are specific diets you would recommend for such a sedentary period?

Maybe I'm just biased cus shes like my mom who ended up committing suicide or maybe I havent seen enough (on s2e9) but I can see how much she tries in her own way. Shes obviously mentally Ill, and while that's not an excuse it definitely explains her actions. There's no doubt shes a god awful mother but I dont think shes a bad person. She was with Frank's abusive ass for a long time and fled and abandoned her kids for her mental stability. She met bob and got herself back together mentally (mostly) and tried to reconnect with her kids and at least have the chance to do what she thinks is the right thing with one of them and step up to raise liam. Only to realize and accept that she fucked up and isnt a part of the family anymore and hasnt earned the right to be in their life and the best thing she can do is walk away and let her family heal. She then comes back in season 2 and has a heart to heart with fionna and genuinely thanks her for the sacrifices shes made, she supports ian and takes him to a gay bar to feel better about Mickey, she has a good night celebrating with Debbie, and is shown multiple times taking care of and sticking up for the kids especially against Frank's abuse. I know it wont last because I know about her suicide attempt so maybe that also sways my bias but god damn I see her as tragic instead of a villian. Between the toxic relationship with frank and her bipolar I don't think she ever stood a chance and ultimately can see her trying to be better for her family and its heartbreaking watching this sick woman try and do something that everyone knows wont work but everyone still holds onto a little hope. It's beautiful storytelling.
I was curious if anyone knew of any notable philosophers who take the the Deist route Antony Flew held at the end of his life.
Can a practicing Diest have salvation through Christ?
Dear all,
I hope its ok to post here and share my thoughts and questions, essentially I am an ex Muslim and noticed many others who left religion or who are skeptics end up as atheists. I understand atheism and the logical standpoint of it but I have three questions that I would like to ask this community to understand your thoughts on these matters directly.
I always get asked the question who do atheists think created the Universe it couldn't have created itself? I personally think there must be some sort of absolute entity to start everything which we call God but I don't necessarily say he must intervene or sent a religion etc. but how do you come to a conclusion the Universe can create itself? Is it possible for existence to suddenly begin without an ultimate 'creator'? Im not entirely sure how to phrase the question but I hope its understood
How do you deal with understanding that we are just here by natural occurrence and not for any specific purpose, the idea that nothing has any true meaning and when we die its all over seems a little frightening, any advice how to accept and live life fulfilled knowing this?
As im still around religious people im constantly looked down upon and told im damned to hell if I dont change my ways which even though i cant see the logic of hell it still feels real and i have to fear it after my life. I hope I dont sound crazy lol but the guilt of feeling maybe I should believe in religion again for salvation always is in the back of my head. Any advice on this?
Apologies if the questions are posed in an unfair way as I made some presumptions please feel free to correct me. I think I believe in God for comfort as of now and because i was brought up in a religious household however im working to get closer to the truth of this world and existence, any thoughts, opinions would be appreciated :)
Edit: Just wanted to thank you all for such amazing responses. I cannot deny all have used logic and good reasoning and simple to understand! you all have made me more comfortable in declaring there may not be a God afterall and to find my own meaning and truth :)
On Halloween night of 2011, in the sleepy Canadian city of Armstrong, British Columbia, eighteen year old Taylor Van Diest is full of nostalgic excitement. A recent graduate of the local Pleasant Valley High School in June of that same year, Taylor had spent the summer reflecting on the nature of growing up and the passage of time. She had also recently learned to drive, finishing her lessons and passing the relevant examinations, and was about to receive her Canadian novice driver βNβ plates. So we can understand why she might he overwhelmed with anxieties about officially becoming an adult. Something we all contemplate at some point in our youth.
She and her friends had ceased Trick or Treating for the previous few years, instead opting for more mature pursuits. But that year in particular, it had hit them that it was something they might never be able to do as friends, ever again. They reminisced of the costumes they used to wear, the huge candy hauls they used to bring home, and the general sense of excitement and mischief that was always in the air on those Halloween evenings. Then together, they decided on one last trick or treating hurrah, committing to donning some spooky costumes one final time, before they would doubtless be turned away by homeowners as far too old for such childish activity.
During the previous year, Taylor had been enamoured with the much loved AMC drama, The Walking Dead. Millions of North Americans had been tuning in, week-in week-out, to keep up with the terrifying stories of Rick Grimes and his fellow survivors, and Taylor was no different. So when it came to her choice of costume that year, like countless other Trick or Treaters, Taylor opted for the slightly derivative, but highly effective choice of Zombie. All it took was a little pale makeup, some fake blood, and an old torn purple blouse, then Taylor was ready to roll. She and her gang of trick-or-treating friends had agreed to congregate at one of their parents houses before heading out into the night, and before she left for the short walk, Taylor called her friend to let her know she was on her way at about 5:45pm, intending to use the usual walking route down Pleasant Valley road. Taylorβs boyfriend at the time, a young man named Colton, was not attending that eveningβs trick or treating, but was still in touch with her regularly. Taylor had promised to split her nightβs candy haul with him, a move characteristically generous of a young woman who had a reputatio
