I can't believe I never watched BE when it aired, especially because I love the gangster genre. I'm definitely glad I did now.
I think Nucky's arc in season 1-4 is just perfect. Becoming a half-gangster, then a full-gangster, and then the denouement in S4 that really showed the effects of loss and exhaustion. I think S4 messed up in not featuring Margaret, and I think that's the first sign that the end-game would be weaker compared to the first four seasons.
Don't get me wrong, I loved Al Capone's arc (beautifully played by Stephen Graham; the scene with his son in the finale had me in tears), as well as George/Nelson, Eli, and Meyer/Charlie. I also like what they did with Nucky realizing he finally wants out, but for real this time. But I don't think the nailed the ending. Here's why.
Firstly, I found the Tommy murder unearned. We don't get to see how Tommy grew up (this could have been a better use than the flashback scenes that, while emotionally resonant, were a retread on things we already knew and just way too much of the already short season) to be a twisted fuck, and it really undermines all Richard did for him. Do we really, as an audience, need Richard to lose Jimmy and Angela, accidentally murder a little girl, AND have Tommy grow up to be a murderer just for us to get that the world (especially that of crime) is really fucked up? I think it's just a nihilistic cop-out to emphasize that this story is a "tragedy."
Which brings ,e to Nucky. We should have been tipped off from the start that, while sticking very close to real history for the historical characters, Winter would do something different with Enoch "Thompson" (nee Johnson). Of course, the real Nucky went to jail, lost his criminal empire, and "retired" in a fairly comfortable final years with his wife. I think exploring the mental and emotional progression of BE's Nucky Thompson to get to that point (and even participating, from the sidelines, in AC's political scene after his release!) would have been much more deep and nuanced than "Nucky was an asshole, he deserved to die, and this is a tragedy!"
This is what makes great tragedy's great: they explore the nature of death and evil, but they don't necessarily offer a nihilistic worldview of the world. What makes Julius Caesar one of the greatest stories ever told is that while Caesar

Please be civil and try to educate each other.
I believe we've needed this for a long time. There is no longer any excuse for anti-LGBT people to say we don't listen to you. We will listen to you. And you will listen to us. And we will come to a conclusion.
For LGBT supporters, aight, I know you all are ready with facts and science up your ass, but please slow down for those who cannot catch up. Some people need to learn from the very beginning. Some people cannot understand "basic human rights", and this is your chance to educate them.
Also, let's not throw people into downvote oblivion. Because if they get too many downvotes then their comments will automatically be hidden and hinder discussion.
Hope mods approve this. Buttcheeks clenched.
Marital rape is currently not a crime in India. Indian men are arguing that by criminalizing marital rape, the institution of marriage will be destroyed. They believe that if marital rape is considered a crime, a lot of false cases will be filed against men (do they think that marital rape will cease to exist if it is not criminalized? )
Indian men are using the #MarriageStrike hashtag on Twitter to protest against the criminalization of marital rape. They are threatening to boycott marriage if marital rape is criminalized in India.
I'm shocked that so many men are openly advocating their support for marital rape. Pickmes are agreeing with these views and are also protesting against alimony laws (they think it's unfair that men actually have to pay for their wives' often-unseen labor).
This entire situation seems like a masterclass in negging to me. Men participating in actions that harm women (marital rape in this case) and then crying about the possibility of being a victim of a false-rape case.
In all honesty, I hope such men do choose to not marry. Indian women already deal with a lot of bs, they don't need to worry about rapist husbands.

Dear sisters and brothers. Today my heart is filled with joy and I come before you with great news! It took 2 years, but the city council has finally outlawed video gβ¬mes totally! Not just the city, but the whole county around it. Due to this new law the police are allowed to arrest anyone on sight they see playing video gβ¬mes! The following are considered crimes:
-Playing video gβ¬mes
-Watching video gβ¬mes
-Talking about video gβ¬mes in a good light
-Not censoring the word video gβ¬me
-Distributing/selling/buying video gβ¬mes
Any type of violation of these laws will be punished with a minimum sentence of 1 year of prison time, with the maximum sentence being a life sentence. If a child is arrested for breaking these laws, the child and its parents will all be arrested. The convictions are also interstate, meaning that entering our county with a gβ¬ming background will immediately put you under arrest, even if you haven't actually gβ¬med in our county.
Finally, the court is aware of the widespread of video gβ¬mes, and realize that having a proper sentencing for every gβ¬mer would be very time and resource consuming. Tha'ts why 2/3 court cases dealing with gβ¬ming do not need the presence of a jury. That way trials can be over in a few days.
We have already made plans for making this a state law! After that next step is a federal law! And lastly, a human right law! We need your help brothers and sisters. Go sign the petition!
Not even trying to sound like a hippie or ultra leftist but like I genuinely canβt wrap my head around it. I try my best to view things from both sides but I genuinely cannot find any rational argument to support drug use being criminalized. There are only a few things I can think of which have direct counter examples and become completely hypocritical, for example:
*drug criminalization is in support of public health as people canβt be trusted to make decisions in best interest for their health: baskin robins is legally allowed to sell a 2600 calorie milkshake, this one feels pretty self explanatory as just the food industries in the US make this claim invalid (if our health was the concern the FDA should be stricter on what can be in our food, like the half pound of sugar in the milkshake aboveβbut of course this would be senseless as people should be able to do what they want).
*itβs dangerous to have a society full of druggies: alcohol. Lmao, alcohol is probably one of the most dangerous substances and yet itβs legal. One of the most dangerous to operate a vehicle on, makes people act irrationally, etc. alcohol being legal negates this point
Canβt really think of anything else. Like itβs just such a retarded law. Distribution of substances is understandable as a crime but like use being criminalized is laughable. Like itβs actually genuinely crazy to think people serve time because they want to change the way their body feels for a little while. Maybe Iβm completely missing something and Iβm the retard here but like I just canβt come up with a logical reason why drug use should be illegal.
As it stands now there are approximately 550K~ homeless people in the United States, at least those we are able to count. I've realized for the past year that a low number like that compared to the entire population of 330M is merely a blip on the radar and doesn't really make those in power look at it and constitute a crisis. Similarly to how losing 600K Americans to a disease compared to the rest of the population doesn't make specific people see that as a crisis.
People are royally screwed, there's no doubt about it. And as the year drags on and modern day Hoovervilles start popping up in a city near you, it makes me wonder what the solution will be. Or if there even will be a solution.
I mean if a guy is able to hold down 4 jobs, while his family is living in a tent, he's doing fine right? It's not like he's starving. He's helping keep those magic Stonk numbers green! A real American!
The powers that be consider a solution to this issue to give people shelter, it's what the people need, however they don't specify what kind of shelter. It could just be a huge gymnasium, with foil type blankets and pads on the floor. They're protected from the elements, and can come and go as they please. And eventually if you're not able to afford a house or rent, not going to places like this every night could be considered a crime.
Eviction means a huge shit stain on a person's record, making it extremely difficult to secure another place. While thousands of properties sit vacant, with millions unable to get in.
Just watching the Sister Wives show and I wonder why they're illegal and if we should make them legal.
Instead of so many segments on Reconciliation Bill politics, I'd like to hear Krystal and Saagar discuss parent rebellions against school boards and AG Garland's proposed crackdown.
From my too long experience, parents sometimes packed school board meetings to criticize trendy, dumbed-down education at long meetings. Bored school board members heard out the complaints, which is different than listening to them. Nothing ever changed, but the parents could speak, even emotionally.
That was decades ago. Since then, a court found Detroit schools responsible for educational malpractice, as an overwhelming majority of Detroit students graduated illiterate. Literate protesting parents from a previous generation had filed the winning lawsuit.
Maybe it should be easier for parents to take part in their kids' education.
From the Daily Mail
Many parents say Garland's memo is an atteredmpt by the government to outlaw opinions that don't match its own liberal views.
Some parents say it's the worst government overreach against free speech.
They are accusing Biden's administration of trying to outlaw opinions that go against theirs.
School boards across America are battling with parents who have questions about policy changes and mask mandates.
It is reaching boiling point - with many teachers quitting their jobs instead of enforcing what some believe are attempts to indoctrinate kids.
I live in Florida where we have the baker act. Basically somebody can call the cops on me and they'll come get me and lock me up for up to 72 hours. That is not a way to help people at all. I'm not some violent animal that needs to be locked up and sedated. Having police come deal with mental health issues is a recipe for disaster. I have to keep things to myself because I don't want to be locked away and drugged. I'm just getting worse. I wrote a text to my sister, who i never talk to, about some things but then erased it because she could call the cops. I can't express anything becasue of fear of being put away by police or even killed on the spot. Texting my sister would have been a huge breakthrough but it won't happen.
