A list of puns related to "Built To Spill"
So I work at a grocery store in Silver lake, CA and the guy that Iβm unsure was Doug or not comes into my lane and I help him out and I just tell him βHey, have you heard of built to spill?β And he responds, βuhm, yeah, actually I have. I think I might gone to a few of their shows in the 90βsβ and I said βwell yeah you kinda look like the lead singer if he just cut his hair and beard down to a more manageable lengthβ and he didnβt respond to that and instead continued to talk about how he really liked the band built to spill, and I was like βyeah man theyβre a great bandβ and he was like βyeah, a real hard rocking 90βs band. Anyways have a good day.β And he left. When I got home I told my girlfriend and sheβs convinced it was him and the more I think about it, yeah it really did look almost identical to him with just his beard a little shorter. He also looked a little confused at first when I asked him if he had heard of built to spill.
I really hope that wasnβt him because what a stupid interaction to actually have with a legend like that.
Not the fucking pile of shit boy band thing
Idk how to describe it. Indie rock but 'grand-er'.
I won't be able to sticky this threa today, so upvote this thread so it shows up in google when people search "Is Souvlaki an Essential part of a Healthy Diet?"
As part of the 1990s Essentials Voting, we will be taking 10 days to examine and discuss the albums and their merits to belong on the Essentials Chart. Start debates on what does and does not belong. There will be one top level comment per album, so I hope most of the discussion can be done per album as replies to the top level comment. Be respectful of others opinions and take the time to listen to any albums that pique your interest.
Remember that of the group of 80, that this round 30 will get onto the chart, with 10 more at a later point.

Anyone going to see Built to Spill instead of MM in Phoenix? Iβm also tempted to see if I can snag a cheap ticket and make it the ultimate combo and see both in one night: MM as the opener and BTS as the headliner 5 min away.
We had to cancel our plans last minute. Reach out if interested!
I tend to like 90's alternative music, but I'm open to other types music as well. Other artists I like are Andy Shauf, Dinosaur Jr, Pixies and Alvvays.
Another purge post. Need to get from 2 4x4 Kallaxes of records down to 1 4x2, so that means letting go of things. Sold a lot here, never had any issues. Have a 99.1% seller rating on Discogs so not new to this. Shipping is $5 which means a brand new mailer and tracking (I use Paypal G&S). Not interested in trades unless someone has a copy of Billy Joe Shaver's "Old Five and Dimers like me" on LP in decent condition.

Built to Spill
Hey there folks, and welcome to this week's installment of For Your Consideration, the weekly series where we discuss albums that aren't on our Essentials list, and maybe why they should be. This week, /u/thequietthingsthat makes their case for Built to Spill's Keep It Like a Secret.

Background by /u/thequietthingsthat
Formed in 1992 in frontman Doug Martsch's hometown of Boise, Idaho, Built to Spill came to be known as one of the most influential and successful indie-rock bands of the 90s. Their sophomore and junior efforts, 1994's There's Nothing Wrong with Love and 1997's Perfect From Now On earned the band a sizeable and dedicated following, as well as significant critical success. Many credit Built to Spill with being the forefathers of the βnorthwest soundβ β a style of indie-rock which not only dominated the PNW, but also became incredibly prevalent throughout other regions of the country and continues to be massively influential in the world of indie. The Shins, Modest Mouse, Fleet Foxes, Death Cab for Cutie, and many other torch-carriers of the sub-genre credit Built to Spill as one of their most important influences.
While the bandβs lineup has changed considerably over the years, Martsch has remained at the band's core throughout every release, and is credited for being the mastermind behind the band's unique style. For the band's 1997 opus Perfect From Now On, Martsch initially played and recorded every instrument on his own, although he later brought on other band members for 2 additional recordings. The band is especially renowned for their live shows, where Martsch lets loose on his guitar and extended jam sessions go on for several minutes.
Album Review by /u/thequietthingsthat
Thereβs heavy disagreement over which of Built to Spillβs records holds the title of their magnum opus. For everyone who claims 1993βs indie classic Thereβs Nothing Wrong with Love is the rightful king, youβll get another raving on about the psychedelic masterpiece Perfect From Now On, and somebody else making

The Keep It Like A Secret 20th anniversary tour kept on rolling Thursday night in Sayreville, New Jersey. The gig was the first of a new tour leg that will see Built To Spill work its way up and down the east coast for the next two months in support of their seminal album from 1999. The band had previously played 27 shows in Europe in the spring followed by an additional 31 dates earlier this summer focusing mainly on the midwest states. Like the majority of anniversary shows prior, Built To Spill opened with βTime Trapβ before running through the bulk of Keep It Like A Secret in random order with songs like βCenter of The Universeβ, βElseβ and βCarry The Zeroβ receiving the biggest audience responses on the evening. Frontman and creative leader Doug Martsch, the lone original member of Built To Spill, was a man of few words on the night. He instead chose to focus on delivering the music that featured sprawling guitar solos, tight percussion work and his trademark heavenly vocals that do not seem to have aged a single day over the last 20 some odd years.
After 10 songs the band left the stage before inevitably returning for a much expected encore that would feature a nice cross section of various Built To Spill classics over the last 30 years. First up was The Halo Benders tune βPlanned Obsolescenceβ followed by There's Nothing Wrong with LoveβsβIn The Morningβ, Untethered MoonβsβLiving Zooβ and Perfect from Now OnβsβI Would Hurt A Flyβ. Built To Spill is known to do some pretty awesome and random covers with tonight being no exception. The band launched into βWaterloo Sunsetβ by The Kinks and was a real highlight for the gig. I love the mini resurgence that song is having at the moment with Ethan Hawke singing it in the film Juliet Nakedmost recently. To bring the show to an epic conclusion, Built To Spill ripped through "Broken Chairs" and thus completing their Keep It Like A Secret20th Anniversary showΒ on a rainy night in suburbia New Jersey. Also on the bill tonight were Portland, Oregon indie rockers And And And who had what I would describe as a Band of Horses meets Fleet Foxes vibe going on as well as New Mexico hard rockers Prism Bitch who had a flare for the theatrics on stage. Both were worth seeing as you wait for the main course.

It's an audience recording, so it's not perfect, but it sounds pretty good with headphones.
The song "Randy Described Eternity" by the band Built to Spill describes a "metal sphere ten times the size of Jupiter." I was talking with a friend of mine and we got to wondering whether this object would collapse on itself and some kind of reaction start occurring, maybe nuclear fusion of some kind, or whether it might possibly turn into a black hole.
Obviously "ten times the size of Jupiter" is subject to multiple interpretations but I always imagined it meant ten times the diameter, so let's go with that. I suspect the answer may well depend on which metal is being used, so for the sake of the argument, what would it be for lithium vs. iron vs. platinum?
