Mindful parenting, don't exasperate your kids.
Great conversation here about depressurizing your parenting to raise stable adults by your example as much as your active parenting.

I'm attempting to decompile their firmware. I can unzip the firmware (.hex format) with 7zip. Results:
Path = Poly2_2.05.hex
Type = IHex
Physical Size = 273685
----------
Path = Poly2_2.05
Size = 97288
Virtual Address = 0x0
I opened it up to see if I could discover what microcontroller it uses but at this point I can't go any further. Maybe tomorrow evening I can.
While gathered for a family funeral a few days ago, one of the folks there suggested I take a listen to the BEMA podcast hosted by Marty Solomon.
I have never heard of this before and I've begun listening to the first few episodes.
His premise seems to be thus: we (as western Christians) have a different perspective on the bible because our patterns of thinking are different. We are interested in facts and information. But, he explains, that is not merely what scripture provides. It provides a story: it provides pictures and relational information. So while we have one perspective, the Jewish people at the time of Jesus had a different way of thinking and applying the scripture to themselves personally. It was more relational and poetic and experiential than we would understand it today.
This is a gross oversimplification (possibly even missing some key pieces) but you'd have to listen to it...
Anyway.
I've listened now to a few episodes and I have a few thoughts:
While he definitely has a unique view in to, say, the Biblical narrative, (a chiasm with the splitting of things the first 3 days and the second the positive creation of all things, with both chaotic void on one side and rest on the other, as one example), his argument here is that we shouldn't be looking at creation as a narrative event, but as a poetic depiction of what happened. That is, no literal 6 day creation here (no matter what the text says).
It seems as though his position relies upon reading and understanding Hebrew. If this is the case then... what do we do with everyone who cannot read Hebrew?
In one of his intro shows he says something like: "If you ask a westerner, 'What is God like?' They will say 'powerful, might, sovereign, kind, etc.' But an easterner would say 'God is a mighty fortress. He is a good shepherd.'" I see somewhat what he's saying, but aren't those two basically the same things, said differently? Wouldn't both easterners and westerners affirm those truths? Even if expressed differently.
I'll probably keep listening, but (thus far) I feel like anyone who simply pays attention to scripture (in english, or any other language) would be able to see most of what he's saying.
Anyway, what says /r/reformed?
I’m looking at the Masters of Bioenvironmental Monitoring and Assessment after I’m finished my undergrad in a year. Is anyone here currently enrolled in that program or have any insight into what it’s like?
I was recently recommended the Bema Discipleship podcast as a way to understand the Bible even better/deeper. It is a multi-year journey through the Bible trying to understand the context around the words.
Specifically, the Bible was written by Jews and for Jews. Jewish thinking is bent toward "Eastern" while we (the U.S/Europe) are bent more "Western/Greek". So, for us to gain more understanding of the writings, we should understand the thinking, communication style, and culture of the Jews.
The main communicator (Marty Solomon) says reading the Bible and applying only Western thinking/logic to it is like listening to someone play only the bottom half of a musical arrangement. To get a better understanding, you need to listen to both halves of the arrangement.
The podcast recommends creating a safe space for questions about the Bible/text and discussing the topics in community. It seems like nearly daily someone on this subreddit questions the validity of the Bible pointing out inconsistencies. This would give us a solid way to respond to at least some of those questions.
Question to this subreddit: Anyone interested in a weekly discussion thread around the 1-3 podcasts for a given week?

A few acquaintances have recently mentioned to me the BEMA podcast. It appears the teacher, Marty Solomon, has a huge beard and looks like a hipster....I don’t know how to take this. But seriously, I’ve listened to the first episode on Genesis 1 where he outlines his beliefs about its poetic form and teaches that one of the primary focuses, is introducing the idea of sabbath/rest to the Israelite community. He states he took a lot from Rob Bell.
After reading some reviews online I’m hearing a whole lot of, “revolutionised the way I read the bible” and “the things I’ve been taught about the scripture were not the way the were originally viewed”. These comments raised big alarm bells for me. Before I go on a crusade, has anyone else delved further into BEMA Discipleship and can offer their thoughts?
