The battles of Verdun and the Somme resulted in about 2 million casualties on both sides with apparently little to show for it. Were there any voices raised to stop the carnage on either side of the trenches? If so, whose voices and what happened with them?

Verdun heigths on operations might not be our favourite map because of the literal uphill battle. But god damn if it is'nt a beautiful spectacle.
I've always loved it on operations from the little visual story it tells through the course of the map if you are playing as an attacker.
You start with this quiant little sunny french village, which by the time you cap it, is completely demolished.
Then as you work yourself up the hill, the ground turns muddy and dark and the sky is set ablaze. By the time your at the last cap, it's hard to believe you're playing the same map as what you started with. I really like that contrast and I know it's not a fun map because of how onesided the match can be. But fuck me it's a beautiful map.
That's all thanks for reading.

Can anyone recommend reliable sources for the Battle of Verdun?
I've found a lot less sources for this battle because it was entirely French/German, so sources for my language (English obviously) are much harder to come by. The sources I HAVE found tend to come from authors that have an unreliable track record. Can anyone recommend some good general purpose sources for studying the battle?

Battle of Verdun - Paintings depicting the battle
This month is the anniversary of the Battle of Verdun. One of the deadliest conflicts and longest battles of World War I. We wanted to highlight some cool facts on this subreddit about the battle itself. Let us know what you want us to highlight or share your most interesting facts about this historical event and be sure to post any things you come across!
For this post, letβs talk about some of the painting and drawings that came from it!
A lot of paintings and drawings have been made about the Battle of Verdun, which would not be surprising, given the scope of the battle. This one is perhaps the most well known. Itβs drawn by Paul Thriat and depicts a French Counter-Attack, which was one of many during the battle that took over 300 days.

[WP] You are death, the Grim Reaper himself, the year is 1916 and the battle of Verdun is coming to an end. It's time to guide all these deceased souls to the afterlife, no matter how painful and heartbreaking it may be for some. This is your job, and war certainly brings a hell of a lot more work

Battle of Verdun - What was the actual fighting really like day to day?
Really curious to know what an actual day would look like for a typical soldier in the Battle of Verdun. I know that most often in WWI each army would charge each otherβs trenches in large numbers usually to no avail. But was Verdun a constant back and forth charge or was there more small pockets of fighting in different sectors on the line?
