Editorial Sunday: The Archivist's Edition

Hello Quibblers, and happy May!

I’m /u/wiksry, the Quibbler Archivist, wiki maintainer, and Other Miscellaneous Stuff Doer. Madam Starflash is currently unavailable^[1] and has asked me to do today’s Editorial Sunday!

###Announcing the Quibbler bot 2.0!

For the last few years, we have been using the tagging bot /u/QuibblerLunaLovegood written by the wonderful /u/pezes! Now that we have the new point system, pezes has allowed me to add on to the bot. You now are able to view how many points you have and β€œbuy” Quibbler store items!

These items will include (pretend) hats, scarves, mugs, chocolate frog cards, and other β€œswag”, drawn by the lovely /u/SinsationalDoom. Staff members will have exclusive items! Items are still under construction and will be released in later Editorial Sundays!

There will be a view-only spreadsheet where everyone can view all points received. Every month, the Payroll Overlord will post an update on points to the subreddit from this leaderboard.

Points from March have been added! Please see this wiki page on how to use the bot. Please note that some commands are only available to staff and mods.

The submission form is now open!

The submission deadline for the Summer 2021 issue is July 15th! The submission deadline for Summer 2021 art is July 20th!

Artists: Please note that the art grading system has been removed. You still must follow the Art Editor’s instructions for submitting artwork - please see /u/SinsationalDoom’s office!

Spoiler policy changes

Anything that's been posted before on /r/hp, /r/hpfanfic, etc is OK to be submitted and doesn't need to be taken down first! These submissions will earn 50% of the points that they would earn if they were newly created. Managing Editors will verify with the author that their submission is OG content. Newly written articles still won't be allowed to be posted before the issue is released.

Edit: The submission form now asks if an article/artwork has been submitted previously.

Carryover reminders from last week:

DEPARTMENT EDITORS: Your new offices for Summer 2021 must be posted by May 5th.

MANAGING EDITORS: Your new offices for May 2021 must also be posted by May 5th, with tags in the comments. Please note the new tagging command.

Stay safe and keep on Quibblin’! <3

Want to be the family archivist but would appreciate support (especially photos and diaries)

Dear Archivists,

I haven’t come across this sub before but found it by searching as I would really appreciate some advice from people who know more than I do. I have been involved in family history searching before etc but what I would truly like some advice about is the preservation and sharing of photos and written papers. I have just acquired the motherlode of family photographs, diaries, and ephemera. The oldest thing I think I have so far is from 1936. I don’t intend to keep all the originals, as the family will want a share. I just want to do a good job of recording and saving and I think I’m best placed to do that so I grabbed everything I could after a beloved family member died. I want to digitise them. I have a basic flat bed scanner (HP 2600 type thing). I would be happy to purchase a proper scanner but I’m a bit lost.

Is this the place for this sort of thing, and could anyone please help me?

Is an MLIS degree necessary to work as a Librarian/Archivist?

I graduated from my MA in history a few years ago. I had originally planned to pursue a PhD and eventually work as a University Professor. After realizing how awful the job market was for history professors, I thought about becoming a Librarian or Archivist only to find out that most job openings required an ALA-Accredited MLIS degree. I was wondering, is it possible to get a Librarian or archivist job with just an MA in history, or is the MLIS absolutely necessary like most of the postings I'm seeing suggest.

Also, any advice on whether pursuing an MLIS degree is worth it? Is the job market for Librarians/Archival work somewhat positive? (located in Canada btw)

Looking for archivists in Scotland

Hi!

This might be a long shot, but is there anyone here who is attending or attended the Archives and Records Management MLitt at the Uni of Dundee in Scotland?

I have gained my BA in History and Archives outside of the UK (still in the EU tho), worked in Archives in said country for years but moved to Scotland due to financial reasons a few years ago and took a career break (and also had absolutely no confidence in my English). However I'd really like to hop back on the archive train as that was something that I genuinely enjoyed doing.

I can't really commit to full time studying but looking at the website and the overview this seems doable to me. Is there anyone who could share their experiences with me? How did you find distance learning? Is it an entry requirement to work in archives prior to applying (I am currently not working in the field, but I can always look for a volunteer position if that's the case)? How long did it take you to graduate?

I'm also planning on bugging the enquiry team but would be great if someone with hands-on experience could help me.

Thank you so so much

Is it necessary to be a certified archivist?

I am in the first semester of my MLIS at the University of South Carolina. Mostly I’ve taken required courses, but I’m leaning toward archives and hope to take an archives course this fall. Most MLIS programs I’ve seen really offer only two tracks, school librarian and general LIS. Further specialization such as Academic or Public libraries or Archives don’t show on your diploma and really come down to an advisor recommending certain courses that apply to your interests. There are not too many Master’s of Archives degree programs, and I’m happy with UofSC. Do I really need to be in an archives program instead? The Society of American Archivists lists UofSC among programs that someone interested in archives may want to take. However, the Academy of Certified Archivists lists only a handful of programs and makes it sound like if you don’t choose one of them then there is a whole lot more rigamarole to becoming β€œCertified” and they make it sound like any archivist worth their salt need to be β€œCertified.”

I have a master’s of education in TESOL and focused on adult education. I have realized teaching is not for me and feel great and confident in my decision to pursue my MLIS, but it illustrates my concerns about my MLIS and pursuing archives. Because my undergraduate degree was in International Studies and I don’t have a teaching license this meant I couldn’t get a full time K-12 teaching position without going back to school for a 18 month career switcher program even though I already have my MEd. The state department of education could never give me a clear answer on how to remedy the situation either. Furthermore, you may notice that my focus was in teaching adults ESL, but besides the fact that there are few full time adult ESL teacher positions, most places require a K-12 license to teach there even though it is an adult program and I have a MEd specializing in it. I hope that helps illustrate my concerns about pursuing my MLIS and specializing in archives.

Concept for my Space Marine chapter - Archivists/Chroniclers(unsure name wise still)

First off I appreciate any feedback or suggestions:D

I'm finally getting s chance to try painting a model via the space marine painting starter kit so yay! So while I get my practice before I even try to paint my tau and kroot I wanted to work on my chapter concept and get some feedback on it and maybe get some suggestions on the chapter or maybe a suggestion paint scheme wise

I also just love the distinct culture chapters who while may retain some traits of thier successor they are a very distinct chapter of thier own

The Archivist/Chronicler Chapter

Motto: Knowledge, even in war, is our greatest Ally(honestly I'm unsure how good it is id love suggestions :D)

Successor:Imperial Fists(not space wolves)

Founding Age:Believed to be of 3rd or 4th founding

Current Chapter Master: Volkmar Grigori

Compliance with Codex Astartes: Mostly

Loyalty:Strong and steadfast

Zealosness to the emperor:strong but not fanatical

Numbers:1500 divided between 3 fleets and home world fortress 100 of those ranks making up a elite guard for Library ships(Liborum Phlanax)

Combat Style:Defense is the best offense(Mainly shield combat/shield formations with a mix of melee and ranged)

Notably they also employ a large amount of dreadnoughts both for battle and out of battle.

Homeworld: Hel Vos - A Icy Death world rife with deadly fauna and plant life that has adapted to the icy hellscape. Populated with a nordic/viking esc culture in the form of many tribes and clans.

Chapter Culture: Having adopted much from thier Homeworlds people, in place of talismans Nordic runes are etched into thier armour and gear, as well as marking titles they earn in battle and thier names onto thier gear.

They also have adopted nordic lingo and iconography with Chaplins(Gothi), Skalds(Librarians), and Eir(Apothecaries) with all three having a distinct skull helm, Chaplins sporting wolf skulls, Skalds wearing raven skulls and Eir wearing stag helms. They also call The emperor Odin , and have a love for poetry with it being a notable thing done in pastime alone with sparring, forging and maintaining gear, hunting beasts, and working with the locals, maintaining relations and keeping the peace. They are allowed to interact with the populace, partially due to the chapters main goal but also because they are very caring and respectful of the Imperiums Citizens and soldiers. They also call thier chaptermaster Jarl

Chapter goal: To secure knowledge in whatever form it is may it be mere books

Calling all youtube archivists, does anyone have an archive of Brandon Rogers' channel pre-2020?

It seems like he's removed/edited a lot of his older content, unfortunately I'm not really a fan of his modern content and recently went back to watch his older videos before noticing something was off, a few videos seem to be missing and others have portions of the video cut.

I had actually planned to archive his channel a while ago but never got around to it, anyone else archived his channel before 2020?

EDIT: my memory isn't great so i'm not sure how many videos were edited, hence why I'd like a full channel archive if possible, however from what I know:

  • "rolling with robbie: san fran fun" has been removed
  • 3 episodes of "theater class" have been removed and a few other episodes had scenes edited out
  • "auntie fee parody 2" has scenes edited out

[Emulation] Nintendo Vs. LoveROMs: The hundred-million dollar lawsuit, the public apology, the self-proclaimed archivists who made it all happen, and the surprisingly heated legal dispute about playing old videogames.

Context: (you can safely SKIP this section if you know what a ROM is and how it works)

In this context, emulation refers to the process of running a video game on a host system to which it is not native. This is done with the help of an emulator, a special script that translates the game code into something the host computer can understand. Running a ROM (raw game code) in an emulator will produce a playable game. If the emulator does a good job, the code will function identically to how it functions on the hardware in the arcade cabinet.

These ROMs are exact copies of the data found on the computer memory chips in the arcade cabinet or game cartridge. Each game has a unique ROM, and the ROM contains all of the data the machine needs to run the game. It is functionally identical to a modern .exe game file. Owning a ROM is synonymous with owning the game, and pirating a ROM is synonymous with pirating a game.

Seeing the success of the homebrew emulation market and wanting to capitalize on the millenial nostalgia boom, the video game developers themselves took a whack at releasing licensed emulators. These mostly came in the form of (a) porting old games to other consoles, and (b) creating "classic version" re-releases of retro consoles that came pre-loaded with popular games. These attempts would receive mixed reviews, generally skewing negative amongst the enthusiast community. The biggest complaint: the emulation work was laughably horrid. It was good enough for the layman to enjoy a quick nostalgic dip, but those with reasonable baseline knowledge of how the game should look were shocked and offended by the quality of these official, licensed emulators. The PlayStation Classic famously got panned for including the European version of some games instead of the US version, even on consoles sold in the US. Europeans have a different screen refresh rate than "we" do (25 Hz vs 29.97 Hz) and this caused massive gameplay and graphics issues. It was quite clear that these consoles were meant to be quick cash-grabs, not faithful and well-intentioned re-creations of classic and beloved games. The game libraries were too small, and what few games were on the emulator were of very poor quality. These quickly became a running joke in the emulation community, further encouraging the piracy and continued use of the ROMs vis-a-vis the actual IP holder was not treating it with care or respect.

The main takeaway here is that the emulation community

Still want to continue the search? I found smaller Easter Eggs in the Xunlai Archivist Dialogues.

First and foremost, congratulations to /u/Evaziel for being the first person to solve the treasure hunt and find Silver Edge! An additional thank you to /u/Ironmaus for sending us on our first new adventure in a far too long time.

My hunt took me into an absurdly wrong direction, I was digging through the discussions of the Xunlai Archivists themselves, the Wiki Editors, where I found what I believe inspired some of the in game dialogue. The Easter Eggs I believe I found have no in game reward, but I had a fantastic time digging them up.

My interpretations of the Xunlai Archivist Dialogues below:

"No, if there's anything I tire of, it's my peers asking about my past. Despite my love of documentation, some things are better lost and forgotten." - Xunlai Archivist Argentum

I believe this is a nod to the fact Wiki User Silver Edge had never created a User Page for himself, which was a reoccurring topic of discussion between himself and other wiki users.

I can't let Misery be the only sysop without a user page =P. I guess it would be make instead of remake, because every time my user page was created, it was done by someone else. Now that I can view deleted edits, the first time it was created and then deleted was when another user created the page with the message "OMG Theres stuff on your page!" The second time was when another user mistook it as my talk page. The other times it was created was due to vandalism. --Silver Edge 20:56, 25 May 2014 (UTC) Wiki Page Here

"You know, there are rumors he was a great swordsman who broke from the warrior's path." - Xunlai Archivist Rylek

Aside from telling the player they're looking for a sword, I think this is a nod to the Wiki Users history as a player.

Yeah, I chose Silver Edge cause it was 3 syllables. I remember using Silver Edge for my warrior character during the E3 for Everyone and World Preview Event, but when I got Prophecies a month after it was released, the name was already in use (and still currently in use) by someone else. Thanks for the suggestions, but I think I'll stick to this name for nostalgic reasons. --Silver Edge 21:45, 15 March 2010 (UTC) Wiki Page Here

I want to be an archivist, but don't know where to start?

Hello,

I'm sorry if this kind of thing is posted all of the time.. I was unable to find some answers to my questions, so I figured I'd make my own post.

I'm very interested in preserving, restoring, and archiving film. I love to uncover lost films, too. I'm currently a sophomore in college for animation but want to take the leap and do this as my career instead. I just don't know what to do for my undergraduate degree anymore, or what schools would be best. I go to school in new york and want to stay there, but everything seems so astronomically priced..

Should I go to a smaller school for cinema studies, for instance, and then go back to new york to finish my graduate degree? What is a recommended Bachelor's Degree for this path? I'm pretty sure I'll need a master's in library science afterward and archival certification, right..?

If you are in this field, what is your daily job like? Is it enjoyable? Is this worth pursuing?

Any advice is greatly appreciated..
