Please help me find someone who would want to adopt my wonderful American Saddlebred! I moved overseas and cannot keep him anymore.

Hello fellow equestrians,

I'm sorry if this doesn't fall under subreddit rules, but I don't know where else to turn and I'm desperate to find a loving home for my horse.

I'm looking to adopt out my wonderful boy Duke. I am now residing in England and he is all the way in Indiana; I feel it's simply unfair for me to hold onto him and receive so little attention and love. With living expenses so high in England, it's become almost impossible for us to afford to keep him. Several times the suggestion of sending him to auction has come up, and while that would be my absolute last-resort, I have no idea what else to do.

Here is the post I have written and shared on my Facebook:

"Duke is a 19 year old American Saddlebred located in central Indiana. He has been used in horse shows, riding lessons, trail riding, and outdoor work. He’s got a wonderful disposition and is incredibly affectionate. An illness two winters ago has left him a bit on the skinny side, but he is fully recovered and has so much potential as a first horse for a child or family. Duke is my first and only horse; he’s been mine since I was only 11 and he has been a wonderful companion to me. However, recently I moved to England with my husband and had to leave Duke behind. As much as I love him and wish that I could keep him, it is simply no longer financially feasible to own a horse on another continent. My family have tried donating Duke to charities, finding someone to lease him, and even simply giving him away, but we have had no luck. At this point, we are feeling hopeless and desperate to find him a loving home where he will get the affection and attention he needs. Our biggest wish is to adopt Duke out to a family, as long as we can guarantee his happiness and safety. Please spread the word to your family, friends, and any horse people in your life and help us find a home for our wonderful horse. Could you be the loving owner that Duke deserves?"

As stated above, he's located in Indiana. He trailers pretty well but needs a place with other horses to bond with.

Please help us avoid the aforementioned worse-case-scenario. Thanks so much.

a good book on American Saddlebred horses for an old hand?

I'm hoping to find a book on American Saddlebred horses for my grandfather as I think it would bring him a lot of joy. He had back surgery several years ago which failed to help his back & led to him loosing the use of his left hand. Understandably, since this he's been depressed over how much he can't do so I've been trying to pick up things that interest him & one high point for him is looking at & talking about horses. My grandparents don't have the internet so anytime I visit with my laptop, he wants to look up info on American Saddlebred horses. He had several as a child / young man & talking about the horses he showed, the auctions they went to, the strengths of 5-gaited over 3-gaited seems to give him a bit more life.

So, I'm trying to find a book or possibly even magazines that he might enjoy that focus primarily on American Saddlebred horses. Thus far, most everything I've found has either been written for children or from the "getting your first horse" perspective, and the magazines all seem to be general, so I'm trying to find materials that someone experienced with horses would find enjoyable. Can the people of reddit suggest any books or magazines that my grandfather might enjoy? Any suggestions on where else to look would also be appreciated!

Why is that horse moving funny? Let’s talk about Gaited Horses!

hello r/horses! i’m excited to be able to share with you some of my knowledge of gaited horses, and specifically, the Tennessee Walking Horse. i see a lot of misinformation and just general confusion around the breed, the different gaits, what terminology means, and so much more. so i’m really happy to help others understand and maybe spark a passion for gaited horses like i have!

just FYI: this will be long, but oh so informational! please read through it, you won’t regret it!

the Tennessee Walking Horse is a hallmark of breeds in the US; is it the most well-known gaited breed, extremely popular in the southern states, but found all over the US and even the world. unfortunately, this breed is probably the most notorious for controversy – many people are only aware of their existence due to the Big Lick shows. because of that, many people incorrectly assume things about the breed and how they’re used; and even worse, they make sweeping generalizations about the kind of people who own these wonderful horses.

before we talk about their gaits, let’s take some time to talk about their history, and what they’re mainly used for today.

The Tennessee Walker came into existence in the 1700’s, having been developed from Narragansett Pacer and Canadian Pacer horses, along with gaited Spanish breeds. they bred these breeds together and got a horse that didn’t trot, but instead had a more comfortable gait they called a pace. they were especially popular on plantations, where people needed to be in the saddle for long hours. people also noticed they were sure-footed over rocky terrain, even in the 1800s, which no doubt started their popularity for trail riding. over the years, other breeds were added for additional qualities, such as Thoroughbreds, Morgan’s and Saddlebreds.

in 1886, a foal named Black Allan (or Allan F-1) was born from a Morgan mare and a Standardbred stud; he would later go on to become the foundation sire of the breed. he was a failure as a trotting horse due to his preferred pacing, so he was used for breeding instead. Black Allan sired a foal named Roan Allan, who also would later become a successful show horse and sire several famous Tennessee Walkers.

the Tennessee Walking Horse Breeders and Exhibitors Association (shortened to TWHBEA) was later formed in 1935. In 1950, the USDA recognized the TWH as a distinct breed.

The Walking Horse Celebration, which is where the majority of the controversy stems for this breed, held its first show

Stable Recommendations in NYC Metro Area?

Hello fellow equestrians! I am moving to the NYC area next week and was wondering if anyone on here had any trainers or barns they could recommend. I have ridden English my whole life-- I did hunter/jumper when I was a kid/teen, played polo at college, and for the past 18 months I have been riding at a Saddleseat barn (mostly American saddlebreds and some Morgans). Saddleseat isn't super common outside of the south, so I don't expect to find it within the NYC sprawl, but I'm not sure if I want to go back to doing hunters or try another discipline like dressage. I don't have my own horse, so I am open-minded and I will have a car so commuting to the barn won't be an issue.

These aren't dad jokes...

Dad jokes are supposed to be jokes you can tell a kid and they will understand it and find it funny.

This sub is mostly just NSFW puns now.

If it needs a NSFW tag it's not a dad joke. There should just be a NSFW puns subreddit for that.

Edit* I'm not replying any longer and turning off notifications but to all those that say "no one cares", there sure are a lot of you arguing about it. Maybe I'm wrong but you people don't need to be rude about it. If you really don't care, don't comment.
