23M Tonsillectomy, Adenoidectomy, Turbinate Reduction for Friday Dec 17th

Hey all!

I'm a grad student scheduled for a tonsillectomy, adenoidectomy (2nd time), and turbinate reduction surgery on December 17th. I had my adenoids removed when I was 7, but they have grown back since quite significantly.

I'm certainly a bit nervous for the procedure & recovery, but wanted to ask about **long-term results from the tonsillectomy** in particular. I tend to get a fairly potent strep infection about 2 - 3 times per year. Triggers are often cold climates / lack of sleep / and traveling (which is annoying because I love to travel).

Why I'm getting surgery:

- Primarily to reduce strep infections. For those a few years post-op, did this improve?

- I've recently had more trouble breathing through my nose / generally getting a good breath at night. I imagine this triple threat would help quite significantly. I've noticed some significant energy reduction over the last year (could be because I'm just getting older haha, but I'm 23 and fit, so didn't necessarily expect to feel quite this way at the moment). I'd like to think that this is due to the breathing restrictions; have others experienced something similar?

Would love to hear about long-term improvements to quality of life / any unforeseen consequences. Any recovery tips would also be greatly appreciated!

Planning on lots of Aloe juice...!

And last question, when did you feel it was ok to start exercising again? I generally do triathlon training - running, swimming, cycling and a good deal of strength training (not crazy heavy weight though).

Thanks for your time & thoughts - grateful that this community exists!

Tonsillectomy and Adenoidectomy for migraines

Does anyone have any experience with a tonsillectomy and adenoidectomy for migraines?

One of my large triggers is air pressure. Driving through the mountains, flying, or even a good storm will trigger a massive migraine. I currently have my tonsils and adenoids.

I was speaking to a friend recently about how adenoids will cause a higher sensitivity to air pressure. I know having them removed as an adult is complicated, but if someone has air-pressure triggered migraines, couldn’t it be a possible treatment?

I'm planning to have my adenoids remove because of difficulty breathing thru my nose, for those who already had it, just want to know if it worked? Was your breathing better?

UPPP, Tonsillectomy, and Adenoidectomy

reposting for weekend coverage

I scheduled my surgery with an ENT for a month and a half from now.

For reference, I've had two home sleep studies- one at age 16, and another last year, at age 20. Both had an AHI of 5 or 6, but with almost exclusively apneas lasting 30 seconds or more. My symptoms have been limited to morning headaches, fatigue, and adrenal fatigue.

I've gotten multiple opinions from several ENTs, and they all 100% recommended removing my tonsils. Not to mention every dentist I've ever seen had commented on their large size. If anyone's curious, they're between a grade 2 and a grade 3.

Definitely not looking forward to the pain especially with UPPP, but I've always had a higher than average pain tolerance. I figure since I'm already going under the knife, might as well go for the highest chance of a cure.

I know non-skeletal surgeries tend to be non-curative, but I'm hoping that since my case is extremely mild I'll be completely cured.

This part is less relevant to sleep apnea, but I'll also be having my turbinates trimmed down slightly with a microdebrider.

Anyone got any tips for dealing with the pain, and for just generally staying sane for two weeks of recovery?

problems 10months post tonsillectomy/adenoidectomy

20F. I had my tonsils and adenoids removed last October. Ever since I had mono at 16 they remained very large and made it hard to breathe, especially during exercise. I had no complications during surgery. In recovery I only had one issue when I coughed out a blood clot too early and it took a long time to stop bleeding. Ice cubes eventually helped to form a new clot and that clot fell off naturally just 2 days later.

Ever since the surgery I have had minor issues with my sinuses/snot. Several times a day I have to cough up massive dried boogers that get stuck. It is not painful, but very uncomfortable. It is worst when I first wake up, which I assume is because I have been laying down and not drinking water for hours. I assumed this would go away as I healed but it still happens. Could this be a bigger issue? What can I do to stop it?

Post tonsillectomy & Adenoidectomy & also had a Septoplasty and a couple other things done in my nose

Holy hell I’m on day two post surgery This post surgery pain is so SOO goddamn bad.. I thought I was good with the pain tolerance but it feels like swallowing glass. Also my uvula is like ten times it’s size and is touching my tongue, I went to my ent to get those things out my nose and he briefly looked at my uvula and said it’s normal to be that swollen since my tonsils were huge. But damn any advice to help me keep moving forward helps !!!!! Thankyou

Toddler adenoidectomy and tubes

(Crosspost from r/toddlers.) Hi! My son will be ~2.5 years old next month when he gets his second set of tubes and adenoids removed. Can anyone provide insight to their experience with this? I keep finding posts either missing the tubes part of adding tonsil removal.

The nurse said it's ~a five day recovery - did you find that to be true? How did you keep your child hydrated? Any tips/tricks?

Bad breath post tonsillectomy/adenoidectomy

Day 8 post op and while I knew bad breath’s common post surgery, I didn’t have that as much because of the post food solution given to me to gargle. But suddenly today, I can get a very weird smell and feel of it especially when I breathe from my nose, my mom said it’s a smell that’s coming from my nose and it’s pretty strong. Did it happen to anyone? Or anyone knows how to temporarily get rid of it though? I have a friend coming to visit me tomorrow and I don’t want to smell like that lol

adenoidectomy and tonsillectomy

Had the surgery today. Anyone else out there in the beginning stages of recovery and want to commiserate together?! Ha! 28yo female - only started having tonsil issues within the last year - tonsil stones, swelling/large/cryps, and constant redness/soreness. No strep or colds in the past year. Finally told the doctor if you don’t take them out, I will find another who will. I know it’s going to be brutal, but I can already tell my nasal and throat airway is immensely more open.

Breathing issues after tonsillectomy/adenoidectomy

Hi everyone, I had a tonsillectomy 6 days ago, and this problem just started. Last night, I woke up unable to breathe (through my nose, not sure if through my mouth as well) a couple of times. When I swallowed, however, it would clear up the issue and I could breathe again. It almost felt like I had thick phlegm was stuck in the back of my throat causing the issue. Sure scared me. Is this normal or should I contact my doctor? Thanks

Got a tonsillectomy/ adenoidectomy as an adult and man it’s no fun at all

So last week I had my first ever surgery, a tonsillectomy and adenoidectomy, which, in terms of surgeries, isn’t that intense. I’m in my early 20s which is the ripe age where it sucks the absolute worst though, and I’m pretty sure they lied to me about how bad it would be haha. The first 5 days were fine, totally manageable, but on days 6/7 where I’m at right now it’s probably one of if not the most painful things I’ve gone through. People tell you, β€œyou just get to eat ice cream for a week!”, which conceptually sounds great but let me tell you after like one day of eating good a bunch of ice cream I never want ice cream again haha.

Overall I’m writing this to just distract myself and be able to talk about it with someone other than my boyfriend, who I’m sure is tired of all my complaining at this point /s. If you’ve got any questions for me or just wanna chat about anything, leave a comment on by. I’m stuck in bed so I’ll be pretty quick to respond.

Can I take Mucinex and honey after a Tonsillectomy and Adenoidectomy?

There is so much fluid built up in my nasal cavity and I can’t breathe through my nose, I have to breathe through my mouth. Breathing through my mouth makes my mouth and throat very dry which is painful and keeps me from sleeping longer than 20 minutes. Swallowing water to fix this is EXTREMELY painful so I was hoping mucinex was an option. I saw some stuff on Google while I was looking for answer for this question on honey soothing the pain. I was wondering if it’s all clear to do that. I was also wondering if it’s okay to drink Gatorade.

I’m currently taking liquid Tylenol, Caltrate, Calcitrol, and Synthroid.

Anyone had a tonsillectomy and adenoidectomy that helped?

So I (26f) haven't been officially diagnosed with OSA yet but have all of the symptoms and I'm exhausted constantly, and have had ex's in the past wake me up panicking saying I stopped breathing in my sleep and have made strange gasp noises. I didn't connect the dots until I recently saw a ENT who said that my tonsils were huge and my adenoids are blocking approx 80% of my nose. My BMI is on the lower side of healthy so weight isn't the cause. He suggested surgery but as I'm from the UK there's a good chance I'll get denied funding so will have to pay for it myself which I don't mind if its likely to improve my sleep as I'm desperate, but wanted to know if it's worth it other people's experiences ? Also from other UK threads if seems like OSA takes a long time to get diagnosed and treated so if there's a good chance it will help I would rather get the surgery quickly and hopefully avoid having to use a CPAP or go down that route

Adenoidectomy and Tonsilectomy Recovery?

So my 3 year old son goes in for surgery in 2 weeks followed by an over night stay. Adenoids are taking up 95% of the nasal breathing space and tonsils are quite large. This combo is causing sleep apnoea. Wondering how the surgery experience went with other kids? What can I expect?

Hi! Curious if anyone’s infant had adenoid removed, and what your experience was like. I’ve never heard of it for babies younger than one, but here we are post-tubes with 4 double ear infections and all our doctors are very concerned he will become antibiotic resistant. It’s also not a guaranteed fix...so any insight on how this worked for you would be great!

My 4yo daughter had a T&A on Wednesday. Her doctor told me that her pain would hit its peak between Sunday and Tuesday. Does anyone have experience with this? Lingual tonsillectomy and adenoidectomy?

Hello again,

So I've wrestled with CPAP for about a year now, and my problem is not that it's too uncomfortable, it's that it isn't working. I know the first reaction is to ask "but did you try," but I assure you, yes. I've tried different masks different settings, different machines. I've been all over cpaptalk trying to figure this thing out.

Fed up, I finally went to an ENT to get checked out. He got the scope up there and immediately went, "Oh, no wonder you're having problems!" My adenoids are so huge that they're completely obstructing the back of my nose, thus ruining the flow of air from the cpap (yes, even with ffm, which I currently use).

It makes sense since I had one of the worst cases of chonic tonsillitis that my surgeon had ever seen when I got them removed at 17. So I definitely want the adenoidectomy, but he also says I should get a lingual tonsillectomy, which is another tonsil at the base of the tongue.

I'm inclined to go ahead with that too since that's what he recommends and since it also makes sense that it would be swollen since my lymphatic system apparently wants to suffocate me, but I just haven't seen or heard of a lot of people that have done it and am a bit apprehensive about its effectiveness.

It doesn't help that most people that got it done got it because they did the older, very controversial UPPP surgery that proved to be way too extreme in a lot of ways.

So if anyone here's had it done, I'd love to hear your thoughts on how the experience was and whether you felt it helped you. Please specify which procedures you got since UPPP is an umbrella term that covers a lot of different procedures meant to open up the airway.

I'm also likely going to have to go into medical debt to do this, so if anyone else did that, I'd love some pointers. I've read that there are some charity organizations that help people get surgeries they can't afford, but since OSA isn't life threatening, I doubt I'll qualify. Anyone know anything about that?
