Moving to GA from CA. Planning to buy a vehicle for cross-country move. Advice on how now to get double-taxed with Georgia's ad-valorem?

Possible to establish residency in Georgia before I officially moved so I don't have to pay California tax?

My family is in Georgia and we'd likely stay with them for a few months as we're looking for a house

Will I have to pay Ad Valorem Tax again on a vehicle that was previously registered in Georgia?

My car was initially bought in Georgia and registered here for 2 or 3 years by my dad. My dad then moved to TN and registered my car there so he could pay for it etc. for a few years while I was in college (which is great! I'm forever thankful for that!), but I'm trying to re-register the same car in Georgia under my name and wondering if I need to pay the massive tax ($600+) again. Normally I would call the county tag office but they are currently closed because of the coronavirus. I'm trying to get an educated guess so I can budget properly, and wondering if anyone has ever been in the same position.

The new tariffs are to take effect as early as Oct. 18. This list is only informative and could be modified before the 18th. Thankfully our Domaine export wines not only in usa but in many other countries. I hope other Domaines focusing and depending on the USA will find a way to limit the damages. Ad Valorem on Leased vehicle from out of state

I have a leased vehicle that started in 2017 out of Illinois. I have one year left of payments on it. If I wanted to register the car in Georgia, would I be paying the tax on the remaining payments I have? Or do they go back and make me pay tax on the entire depreciation that I've paid down over the life of the lease? I cant seem to find that anywhere online. Also, the law changed January 1, 2018 and my lease began before that, so I'm not sure if maybe theyll charge me based on the old calculation of 7% on the fair market value. So much confusion on this... I'm honestly thinking its best to not register it in Georgia and leave it in Illinois until the lease is over. I want to get a GA drivers license but it sounds like it'll cost me thousands with this TAVT. Could I add someone to the lease who resides in Illinois to circumvent this?

So I received a car from my grandfather and I want to register it here in Georgia. I read online that β€œFamily members who receive vehicles from someone who has not paid the GA TAVT have two options. You can choose to license the car under the state's annual ad valorem tax or change to the one-time TAVT payment. β€œ

I know the one time fee is 7% of the cars fair market value, but what would I pay if I chose the annual ad valorem tax instead of the one time fee? I only plan on living here in Georgia for one more year anyways and would definitely want to choose the annual fee instead if it’s cheaper.

Ad Valorem when buying my leased car?

My car lease is going to be over in a couple of months and I'm trying to plan out what I should do afterwards. One of my options would be just purchase the car. I couldn't find any good info on the taxes for that purchase since the laws surrounding vehicle taxes have changed pretty significantly a couple of times in recent years, and google brings up all kinds of articles from all the different versions, none of which specifically address this situation.

When I started the lease, the law at the time was to pay Ad Valorem taxes on the full value of the vehicle (my understanding is that now you just have to pay for the agreed upon depreciation of the car over the lease term). If I buy my car now, will my taxes be taken care of since I already paid for the full value, or will GA "double-dip" so to speak, and charge Ad Valorem on the current value of the car as well?

PSA regarding Title Ad Valorem Tax when purchasing from immediate family member.

The other TAVT post reminded me of this.

If a Georgia auto title is being transferred from one immediate family member to another, you only have to pay 1/2 a percent of the value of the vehicle rather than the 7 percent usually required. The form is an MV-16, and both seller and buyer signatures do need to be notarized. The auto does have to already be titled/registered in GA.

Just hoping to save someone some money somewhere. The tag offices definitely won’t ask if there’s any relation.

Does Georgia's ad valorem tax on car purchases require you to pay double the tax on out of state car purchases?

For context, Georgia charges a 7% Ad Valorem tax on obtaining a Georgia registration and title (7% of the fair market value). This seems to indicate that if you buy a car in a different state, and pay sales tax there, then bring it to Georgia and then get the registration and title there, you'd essentially pay double the taxes on the car. Are there some subtlies to the law that would allow me to avoid paying both taxes, or get credit from one that I can put to the other?

Is there a way to bypass the INSANE ad valorem tax when transferring a title in Georgia?

I recently received a vehicle as part of a trade, and signed the title (as one should, legally). I have had the vehicle for less than a month but I have a buyer ready to take the vehicle. BUT, the tag office wants almost 400 dollars to get the title transferred in my name just so I can turn around and sell it. This to me is robbery.

I'm curious to know if any of you have had any experience with getting around this. I've got a buyer from Tennessee who wants the car, but I can't fork out hundreds of dollars right now.

Any help would be massively appreciated. Thanks in advance.

Edit: thanks for the replies, folks. It appears that I’m just out of luck on this one. It sucks that I’m going to have to pay absurd tax on a vehicle that I’ll never even put a tag on :( Apparently we owe a thanks to the greedy car dealers of Georgia for this absurdity.

Moving to Georgia? Just bought a car and worried about double tax? Quick Title Ad Valorem Tax (TAVT) Money-Saving Break Down

I've seen a couple posts recently with people moving here and worried about getting taxed essentially twice on their cars. You may not realize it but you could actually save money by getting a new car. I broke down the math below...

Quick few pointers:

  • In Georgia TAVT is currently at 7% statewide, it can be raised again in 2018 or 2022 but will never exceed 9%

  • In Georgia the tax is calculated differently based on whether your purchasing a new or used vehicle

  • Used Cars: You will only pay tax on the difference between your trade-in value (what the dealer gives you for your car) and what they consider the "fair market value" (a number the state says is calculated "by averaging the current wholesale and retail values")

  • New Cars: You will only pay tax on the difference between your trade-in value and what they consider the "fair market value" or purchase price of the vehicle (whichever is higher)

Option A

Lets say you bought a new BMW 328i in South Carolina for instance...

Purchase Price: $36000

South Carolina Tax (5% of Purchase Price, Max of $300): $300

Dealer Document Fee: $300

Total Purchase Price: $36600

Georgia Tax (7% of "fair market value", $30k for a 2016 328i in this case): $2100

All together you've paid $38700 to get your car registered here

Option B

Now if you were to trade it in on a new 2016 BMW 328i in Georgia...

328i New Purchase Price in South Carolina with Tax and Doc Fee: $36600

328i Trade-In Value with 12,000 miles (from NADA): $31600

328i New Purchase Price in Georgia with $300 Dealer Document Fee: $36300

328i TAVT Tax: $330

(Your only taxed on the difference between trade value and purchase price on new vehicles)

All together you lost $5000 on the trade but were only taxed $330. Added to the purchase price you come out to $41600. It cost you an additional $2900. Worth getting a new car with 12k less miles? That would be up to you.

Option C

If you were to trade it in on a 2016 Certified Pre-Owned BMW 328i with only 10000 miles...

328i New Purchase Price in South Carolina with Tax and Doc Fee: $36600

328i Trade-In Value with 12,000 miles (from NADA): $31600

328i CPO Purchase Price in Georgia with $300 Dealer Document Fee: $32600

You wouldn't owe any tax! Used vehicles are taxed based on what the state considers to be their "fair market value", again only $30k for a 2016 328i. Your trade is worth more than that, so no tax is assessed.

*All together you lost $5000 on the trade but weren't tax

Appealing TAVT (Title Ad Valorem Tax). Anyone tried? How did it go?

I bought a very worn out truck recently with high mileage, body damage and some significant suspension/steering repairs. Got a good deal on it, however the State valued this truck at twice the price I paid (and I think I paid 1k too much). The truck has potential, but with nearly 400k miles on 13 years of service - average miles/year are double what the State says is normal use for a vehicle.

It looks like I have to actually pay the inflated TAVT before I can file appeal, and from the car dealer -- appeals do not usually go well in Fulton and Gwinnett counties.

Has anyone successfully appealed TAVT, if so how did it go? Anything others might need to know going in?

The Perfect Pair of Headphones, Ad Valorem & A Very Long Hello Thread

Hey /r/headphones,

TLDR: $250 USD

I'll start this off by saying that, I love headphones, like you guys; I just have a very modest approach to them. I'm not an "audiophile", I'm just a regular person, but I've found some hard proof of certain things, so I came to share them with you and see what you think. :)

I've owned several pairs throughout my lifetime, and tested maybe 20-50 other pairs. I've found that, like many things in life, that there is a ceiling to quality, an ad valorem - the utilitarian/true cost of an object. As much as we hate to admit it, at a certain point, magnets cannot become any more sophisticated -- there simply is no headroom left to squeeze out of something. That being said, there is no "floor" to how cheap something can become.

A good parallel would be a $1000 watch. It will tell you the time as much as a $100 watch (the cieling/ad valorem for watches), and as much as a $10 watch (floor), but may only have some 'luxury' features on top of it unrelated to the watch mechanism itself, like crocodile leather, diamond studs or whatever.

Anyway, from all my Amazon adventures, I've narrowed down a list of 'ad-valorem' headphone pairs, which are the highest quality at the price-points possible.

I. Monoprice 108323 Over-the-ear, Closed-ear ($30)

Now, these Chinese-made, pleatherbound, plastic headphones may look like garbage at first glance. However, what they really are, is the perfect set of portable cans. The ear-cups rotate to a full 180', and the 50mm drivers deliver outstanding bass, clean mids, and decent highs, with a relatively lower power requirement. The pleather is not uncomfortable and doesn't hurt your head on extended use.

With a bit of superglue, you can attach a GoGroove Bluetooth Reciever ($25), increasing the total price of these to $60, but giving them A2DP capabilities for Android bluetooth pairing, making them ideal for exercise/transport/etc. At this replacement cost, you don't really care about wrecking them, getting them sweaty, etc. The A2DP has very little to no distortion, surprisingly enough.

They also come with customizable stickers/decals you can throw on the side for $10, letting you add a bit of color. I put blue on mine.

II. Sennheiser HD555, Over-the-ear, Open-ear, ($100)

The most important thing about these, is comfort. They are what I would call, "transparent" headphones. You forget that you are wearing them.. 10 hours later. The velour pads
