So I found out from an old project my mom did that my great great great great grandfather (Thomas Ewing) took in the orphaned William Tecumseh Sherman as a foster child who would go on to marry my great great great aunt (Ellen Ewing). My legal great great great uncle is William Tecumseh Sherman!

William Tecumseh Sherman doesn't get enough respect.
Whenever I hear his name mentioned it's generally someone from Georgia complaining about his march to the sea. As an American General, that march was a brilliant move, and I don't believe the psychological effects it had on Lee's army of Northern Virginia can be overstated. 10/10 strategy

TIL that around 1853, future general William Tecumseh Sherman was shipwrecked twice in one day while sailing to meet business partners in California. The ship he was on, the S.S. Lewis, sank about a day's journey from its destination. A logging schooner that came to Sherman's rescue also sank.

What are your actual, non-meme opinions on William Tecumseh Sherman?
There are a ton of memes here praising his burning of Atlanta, but what do people here actually think of him.
I like to think of him as an anti-hero. He may have done some pretty fucked up things but still fought for the good side. He was a villain fighting even bigger villains. It kind of reminds me of Megamind when he was fighting Titan in the movie said "oh you're a villain alright, just not a super one!" I think of the march to the sea as the civil-war equivalent of the Hiroshima and Nagasaki bombings, where a lot of civilians died but it was necessary to end the war.

Is there a backstory to William Tecumseh Shermanβs middle name?
It would seem like that would be an interesting choice of middle name that his parents decided upon. When Sherman was born in 1820, was there a particular reason his parents gave him this middle name? If Iβm not mistaken, Tecumseh , Shawnee warrior, attempted to lead a Native American confederacy with British support, to reclaim Ohio River Valley lands for his people in the early 19th century. Are there accounts from Sherman or his parents explaining the backstory to the choice of his middle name?
