Do you believe in the superstition about not wearing pearls on your wedding day?

This is typically a Latin superstition, but I LOVE pearls and really wanted them to be my statement jewelry/accessories. Do you think it’ll bring tears of sadness as the folk tale says? Did you wear any on your big day (or plan to)?

Edit: the folk tale means tears of sadness throughout your marriage, not your wedding day! Sorry for not clarifying

[Questions] Shinto wedding and superstitions/numbers

Hello there,

I'm new here, and I hope this is the right place.

I've been reading up on Japanese wedding traditions (not planning to, just trying to learn), and superstition and numerology/rokuyo. (If you ever need a rokuyo calculator that covers the next 80 years, I found one)

I've wondered about san-san-kudo and the number of parties involved.

This site claims

>-The β€œsan-san-kudo” ritual is performed by the bride and the groom and both sets of parents. Each person takes three sips of sakΓ© from each of three cups. The first three sips represent the three couples (the bride and groom and both sets of parents). The second three sips represent three human flaws:Β  hatred, passion, and ignorance. The third three sips represent deliverance (β€œdo”) from the three flaws.

… and I've found that more or less echoed about various other sources. (According to my information, the literal translation is something of "three, three, nine".)

So, my questions:

  1. Does it matter how many people/couples are drinking? (I read that the nakoudo also drinks if they're present β€” that would make it four parties, wouldn't that be bad? Or is it somehow cancelled out?)
  2. What would you do if one set of parents is not available? Would you
    1. ignore it and proceed as you were
    2. have someone else standing in
      1. … a priest?
      2. you hire someone? (a nakoudo?)
      3. you ask a friend/guest? What if you don't have any?

Thank you in advance for the answers :)

Wedding Superstitions?

I’ve heard of some of the popular superstitions (rain on your wedding day is good luck, the groom seeing the bride’s dress before the wedding day is bad luck, having pearls at your wedding is bad luck) but what are some that you’ve heard of that you believe in?

Wedditors, what superstitions are you taking into account during your wedding planning?

Most of us have heard and many brides follow the saying, β€œSomething old, something new, something borrowed, something blue” but my dad pointed out to me that the rhyme continues with, β€œand a silver sixpence in her shoe” and found a historic silver sixpence for me to attach to my shoe. I’m also keeping my dress out of sight from my FiancΓ© until the day, and we’re spending the night before apart, so he doesn’t see me before the wedding.

Whether or not you believe in them (or agree with their origins), some of the superstitions and old-wives tales are fun to learn about and put into practice, so which ones are you embracing for your wedding?

Wedding Traditions and Superstitions

  1. Sukob
  2. Yung may isusuot dapat yung bride na "something old, something new, something borrowed"

What wedding/reception traditions and superstitions are you keeping and which are you ditching?

I'm in the early stages of planning but I've already picked a bunch of different things I'm not doing at all or changing. I won't be having any wording like "who gives the bride away" or anything similar, I won't be using the usual Here Comes The Bride to walk down the aisle, no Save The Dates instead I'm going make a social media post then send out invites once our venue is locked down, I'm wearing a black dress instead of white, no father daughter dance, no something borrowed something blue etc, no guest favors at the wedding, no unity ceremony, I will see my groom before the ceremony but not after I've put my dress on, and since I have pretty awful social anxiety I'm going to try to get away with not having any wedding showers or a bachelorette party and just ask guests to bring their gifts to the wedding itself. Should I consider keeping some of these traditions? What are you keeping or ditching and why? I'm always interested in seeing how people personalize their weddings.

Question About Polish Wedding Superstition

Is there a Polish superstition about being stood up at the altar three times in a row? If so, can someone tell me more about it? I'm trying to understand a family myth about two ancestors a few generations back, both from Poland. Supposedly, on two separate occasions, the bride had the a groom not appear at the wedding. Her parents arranged for a third man to migrate to the US from Poland to marry her and was somehow guaranteed not to stand her up. Apart from being terribly sad and hurtful, the story states that there were some sort of cultural consequences to the bride if she was jilted at the altar three times. However, the story is not specific about what the consequences were. All I know is they took some extreme measures to prevent the consequences of the third failed marriage attempt. Thank you in advance.

Random Thought: Are there any superstitions/old wives tales about starting your wedding shawl early?

I'm with the man I want and intend to marry. We've talked about getting married for years and have made a million future plans together. I'm looking at these super gorgeous, mega massive wedding ring shawls/veils and I want to make one for my eventual wedding. We just aren't engaged yet.

So - I was wondering if starting it this fall, giving myself ample time to work on it, (let's be honest, years), and taking it slow, would break any superstitions, old wives tales, or juju.

If so, when is the appropriate time to start one!? I feel like I'd never finish something this massive even with a year or so long engagement!

Thanks guys!

Death of a relative superstition in relation to wedding plans. Need advice.

I'm reposting this from my /r/weddingplanning post.

My fiance and I are both Chinese. My wedding is set next year. Unfortunately, my grandmother died (at 83 yrs. old). My relatives are telling me that I need to get married within 100 days, or after 1,000 days (3 years).

They are telling me that something bad will happen to my future children. My fiance and I don't really believe in any of this. We still want to get married next year, but we are so pressured. I told my relatives that it's okay with me to get all the bad luck (because I don't believe in luck anyway). They seem pissed.

Getting married within 100 days feels rushed. On the other hand, waiting 3 years, seems too long. Other people might die during that time, and if we follow the superstition, we may never get married. For me, it seems like the it's more bad luck if you actually follow the superstition.

Any one experience something similar? What was your result when you went against your relatives?

Me? Well we are seeing each other before the wedding (and walking down the aisle together). I also just learned that wearing a pearl necklace leads to tears in the relationship- welp I'm not changing my hand me down pearl necklace for something else.

I'm going to a Japanese wedding in a month. I was told that giving money in any amount that contained a four or was even *divisible* by four was considered bad luck. Has anyone else heard of this? I know about the four=death superstition, but divisible by four??

Sounds like "horsepucky" as my mom would say.. I don't think giving them $100 or $150 would be horribly offensive to their culture - but I thought I'd ask here just to make sure.

Did the whole "not seeing the wedding dress before the wedding day" superstition start with one brilliant Groom getting out of dress shopping?

Anyone who has planned a wedding, knows how many details there are to worry about. Taste testing, flowers, colors, venue, chair covers, endless tasks. But the one that could be the longest? Dress shopping. Sitting on uncomfortable chair all day, judging dresses.

But, thanks to the superstition, grooms legitimate excuse to get out of it. I don't think it's a superstition, just some brilliant guy long ago that told his bride to be that it's bad luck for the marriage.

Who Gives A Crap About Pagans Think! What Do We Jehovah’s Witnesses Think About Christmas?

It’s that time of year again. In fact, most Jehovah’s Witnesses have been busily cringing for a couple of months now. You can call us grinches or whatever, but the fact of the matter is that every time we go to the store, turn on the radio, or drive down the street... we’re pelted into submission until it’s all we can do to shut our eyes, stuff our ears, and hum song number 23 or whatever. It’s frick’n Christmas again and most of us Witnesses can’t bloody stand it. Good thing it’s almost over, right? I wouldn’t be surprised if others shared the sentiment, but I bet not all care for the same reasons. This thought leads down an interesting road.

Why do we steer so far clear of it we fail to even realize that our problem with Christmas isn’t Christmas itself... It’s us? I know that doesn’t make a lick of sense, but hear me out. We say, β€œChristmas is a pagan holiday, and so we’ll have nothing to do with it.” but we conveniently forget that everything, and I mean EVERYTHING, is a pagan something. People in the know say, β€œWell, we have to have a balanced life, and so we can’t avoid EVERYTHING.”

Why not, I ask? If we are to be no part of the world, and everything in this world has pagan origins, why not avoid it all? Is ignorance of the law excuse for breaking it?

So then… We ignore the things that are inconvenient because they make our lives easier. We’ll buy a Starbucks knowing full well the symbolism behind that company’s logo, or a drink Monster energy drink knowing that the Hebrew form of 666 is pasted right on the can. We’ll make excuses and allowances for the things that matter to us, because they matter to us and no one else cares. Why should they? God doesn’t care about a number on a can or a mythical creature, does he? What about all the other things? Chocolate for one: first domesticated and cultivated by man as part of a worship ceremony to false gods, employed by the same people that ripped beating hearts out of still living victims. They even used the Chocolate seeds as currency for sex in that culture. The wedding cake stems from a worship ritual of a Greek goddess. Until today, you probably never knew that building snowmen was once a pagan ritual used to bring pleasant weather from sky nymphs in Russia or used to scare away Christians by the barbarians of sax-age Germany. No one looks at a friendly snowman with his scarf and his carrot saying, β€œGod’s not gonna be happy about this”. Why not? Surely he knows what we used them for in the past. He

Do I have to wait the 12 weeks? Is that just superstition?
