Story number 2: Uncivil war
The Traxian were one of three nations that had merged to form the Weke Union, bringing unification and peace to their world. Dissenting voices from the three nations had by and large been negotiated with and agreed to either join, leave or accept some sort of compromise. One group had rejected all offers and instead claimed a series of uninhabited islands to isolate themselves from the unworthy. The rest of the world accepted this and moved on, leaving them to maintain their claimed purity of mind and body from the lesser peoples. Time continued its endless march.
The Weke Union was discovered by a Galactic Council probe and within thirty years gained admittance to the galactic community. A crystal that formed in the local system was found to be both beautiful and useful in optical arrays leading to a healthy series of trade agreements. Basic technology that allowed for research and social self-improvement was offered free as gifts from many friendly species. As per galactic law FTL and military application technologies were not to be supplied, however solutions to pollution and sub-light drive research were supported. Alien embassies were established, and the future was a bright and prosperous place. Until the spaceport exploded.
Once a minor group, tucked away from sight on their island home, the True Traxian, as they called themselves, had created vast cloning vats and expanded their numbers. The usually slow reproductive rate no longer held their population back, and with enough members to be a completely self-sustaining and stable society they had set about infiltrating the Weke Union. The Great Purity Plan was complicated by the arrival of the off-worlders, however this also created new opportunities.
The True Traxian had stolen a human drone stationed at the space port, stripped the most useful parts and spent a year getting the parts to work. An incinerator that created an invisible beam hot enough to melt steel and a shield that no weapon could breach. To their surprise they discovered the shield could absorb energy from weapons being fired at it to reinforce and harden the shield itself. A full third of their population was dedicated to replicating these devices by rote; the True Traxian didn’t actually understand how it worked.
With their new advantage over the Weke Union, True Traxian attacks broke out across the entire world, surging outwards from their self-imposed exile. The Weke Union was sent reeling in the
