A list of puns related to "Terminal degree"
Having just received my 2020 Faculty Evaluation, my chair is stating that I now need to publish after having attained tenure & promotion and building a successful 30 year academic career with Creative Research.
A MFA is considered a final degree in my field. Our College of A&S considers creative research equal to publication. I have continued to produce Creative Research, written & been awarded grants, presented my research internationally, nationally, regionally and statewide often with related service activities.
It is my understanding that professors with PhDs have greater expectations from universities to publish as opposed to those who entered academia with a final MFA degree. Am I wrong? Has something changed? Or is this a standard upon which I can rely?
Is it possible that my chair can redirect my area of creative research to that of expectations to publish by documenting this on my faculty evaluation this year? Could he then use this as a tool of evaluation for me the following year(s) without possibly having met a standard that I donβt think actually applies to my situation?
My field of dance, specifically ballet, has very limited options as far as academic journals or other publications that are specific to ballet in academia and are of interest to me. This has precluded me from considering publication in the past.
In your opinion, should I bring this up to my chair in the 5 days I have to respond or wait it out for the next 7 years until I reach retirement knowing that I could receive unfavorable 5th Year Post Tenure Review before I do?
Please do respond if you should have any suggestions or thoughts about me walking back on this annual review and expressing what I believe to be true regarding required publication at this point in my academic career. Many thanks in advance!
Hi all,
I've recently been accepted into a master's in clinical psychology program out of California. I am Canadian and this program meets the requirements of registering as a psychologist in my province. However, to be registered anywhere else in Canada, you need a PhD. The university is not a research institution and, although I would be completing a thesis, it would be a lit review/ environmental scan.
I have two questions.. would that type of thesis bar me from applying to PhD programs? And secondly, are those terminal degrees ever worth it?
I know it is the most fiercely competitive school on the planet, and I know the odds are super low. But regardless of your major or field, do you have any advice for someone trying to get into MIT's engineering SM degree for grad school? I know lots of research, publications, and 3.8 or greater GPA is competitive, but what about contacting professors for placements in labs?

Did my bachelors in Chemistry in Germany and am looking to go to school in the US.
With a GPA just under 3.0 and not much research experience except for mandatory labs and my thesis, also the program being a 3 year bachelor degree, I am guessing getting into a competitive grad school could be quite difficult.
In order to improve my chances, I would like to complete a terminal Master's program first. There don't seem to be too many of these programs. So far I've found UC San Diego and University of Michigan. As both these schools are quite competitive, is it feasible to get into a MS program there (perhaps they are easier to get into than the respective PhD programs), or are there other alternatives you all would recommend (other programs, or other ways of improving my chances of getting into a PhD program)?
Thanks in advance, still quite confused by the sheer amount of different options.

Hi r/IOPsychology!
Hope you all are staying safe and healthy!
So at this point I am sure that I want to pursue a doctorate. However, my partner and I would vastly prefer the chance to live in one place for 2-3 years and then to a different place for another 2-3 years rather than staying in one location for 5-6 years.
Most of the I-O master's programs I have found are terminal degrees. Does anyone know of master's programs that end with a thesis and set you up for a PhD? I am looking for programs in the US and Europe. I have been living on the SIOP website, but they don't have a clear distinction for this that I can find.
I appreciate any help/advice! Thanks in advance.

Are there any rules of thumb for when to use the "Dr." title?
I've been a bit lost in the job market with just a BS in biology. I've only been able to find a few job openings for laboratory technicians in Georgia. What I see a lot of however is medical laboratory technician positions. But they all require an MLS and ASCP certification. Is it worth it to spend a year getting an MLS over a master's in molecular biology or microbiology? Which has more value, in the long run, looking for jobs? It seems like the pay might be better with an MLS but the work is also really repetitive and uninteresting as compared to a master's. What other terminal degrees or certifications would you recommend if I want to only work in a lab and not deal with patients or customers?
Thanks for your interest, guys. All items have sold!

UPDATE So I wrote a letter of appeal explaining all the personal issues I went through and how I have ADHD and was not referred to the office which handles that and the Dean didnβt care.
She said thanks for sharing my issues, but my GPA isnβt a 3.0 so Iβm SOL. She suggested I email a professor about changing a grade, but I donβt really see that happening.
I guess now Iβm just left with what to do. Iβm 34. There is no other job path or choice it took me a while to get here, something I love and Iβm good at. I donβt know how to move forward as Iβve never been kicked out of school. However I need to get into another MSW program ASAP.
So I just finished my first semester of the online masters of social work program and it was rough. I lost two family members to COVID, one close college friend to suicide and struggle with mental health issues including anxiety and adhd. I turned in assignments late, I felt like I could never catch up because of the amount of reading. The quality of work that Iβve turned in has been good, and only had lower marks for being late.
I had a full on emotional breakdown the week before finals and completely shut down. Like my therapist wanted me to go to the hospital immediately. The thought of that terrified me, so I pulled myself out of my depression as much as I could and turned in and completed what I could. I spoke with my teachers, even telling them how overwhelmed I was and how I wanted to quit. All told me not to quit as I was chosen for that program, bright and they could see my potential to be an amazing social worker. Five days later, I get an email from the Associate Academic Affairs Dean saying that Iβm dismissed from the program, degree termination is effective today and I wonβt be able to retake any classes or continue in the program.
To say that I am taken aback and floored would be an understatement. I was told this was βdifficult news,β but this is my life. So you arenβt allowed to make mistakes in the program or if you do thatβs it? I guess I donβt know if and how to handle the situation, I truly just want to give up altogether.
In December I graduated with a BS in Computer Science and Engineering. I had a focus in AI and worked as a research assistant for one of my professors. I applied to a number of graduate programs to keep my options open, but have been working at a software company in the meantime (I have a 6 month contract so it would expire/be up for renewal just before the school year started).
Would it be better to continue working in the non-AI software industry, or would ending my contract in July to go to grad school be better given that I wouldn't be planning on getting my PhD? How much of a difference is there between BS+2 years industry experience, and a Master's with a specific focus in the field I want?
Here in the US, it's 12 years of grade school (5/6 - 17/18)
4 years of college or university (18 - 22) That gets you a 4 year degree or a Bachelors in the arts or science (a BA or a BA)
Then grad school is 2 years for your master's and then another 2 years for a PhD which is typically a terminal degree.
There are other post graduate degrees like JD or lawyers, MDs for doctors...ect.
To keep it short, I had good research experience in undergrad (one 1st author, 2 co-author papers, all in different fields with different labs) but only around 3.2 GPA, graduating last year. I could probably get into non-top programs, but I don't want to give up my goal of getting into the top ones like of MIT and Harvard and such until I have to (this became a life goal only towards the end of my undergrad career, and I didn't care about my grades much before then).
Would getting around a 4.0 GPA and more papers in a terminal Master's program help with getting into top 5 programs, or is it a waste of time and I should just accept my destiny of being doomed to a lower ranked program? People have said different things about this, and I am worrying because you have to send all of your college transcripts when you apply, not just that of your final degree. Even with an excellent MS GPA, schools might not want to take me because my shit uGPA would lower their admitted student GPA averages, which could in turn affect their rankings. For example, Harvard has an average admitted GPA of over 3.9, and accepting someone like me would bring that down quite a bit and tarnish their reputation.
I feel that I could do pretty well in an MS program, since I recently took as a non-degree student a graduate course related to a field I want to do research in, and did well in it.
As an aside, the field that I want to go into is the field in which I had my 1st author paper, with maybe some deviation. I think I'm pretty decent at it.
Lets assume you have a completely enclosed water slide with a 90-degree section at the top long enough for you to reach terminal velocity falling without touching the slide could you gradually curve the slide out at the bottom in such a way that you could touch down and survive?
I'm being overly simply with this question, so don't focus on that, I'm just trying to start a conversation (which might fail, and that is fine). I'm not trying to pass judgement.
I've been applying for jobs in English/Writing depts a lot lately. The message I'm getting from hiring committees is: if we can get a PhD for the price of an MFA, we're taking the PhD.
Due to the rise in MFA programs, we now have a PhD in Creative Writing. Granted, everyone goes into any higher education program with different expectations and no two MFAs or PhDs get the same education, still, I wonder if the MFA in CW is changing or, even, becoming unnecessary? Or maybe the idea of an MFA is just that it isn't a terminal degree anymore. If we have PhD, why not get an MA? Just throwing questions out there for debate.
Also, I have an MA and an MFA, but I'm not saying I have the answer to this question, or that there is an answer. Again, just looking for a conversation.
And I was very excited that I may make rent this month. Some of my best friends from school are working for Goldman Sachs, McKinsey, Various top law firms, etc. Others are more like me. Very crazy times.
That is all.
Thanks.
