Why British Empire bankrupted after WW2, yet USSR did not collapse or become third-rate power (and even grew into superpower), despite suffering much greater devastation and 27 million deaths?
Need help figuring out how geopolitics would be reshaped by the overnight collapse of superpowers
I am working on a setting where the USA and the Soviet Union in the middle of the 80s suddenly and without warning overnight died, hundreds of millions instantly dead with no apparent cause and large sections of the former nations becoming unarable wastelands with no apparent cause. The story will take place 150 years after the initial collapse of the world economy from the event in a sort of post-postapocalyptic cyberpunk world. However I am not entirely sure how the sudden overnight destruction of the world superpowers would impact some nations such as India and the Middle Eastern countries for example due to my complete lack of cultural and historical knowledge on those nations, I also do not know what would happen to most European nations, South American nations and the situation that would occur in the Pacific. As such I would like advice from people more knowledgeable than I am on how to best collect research and manage the politics of the reshaped world without potentially misrepresenting or failing to properly integrate large areas of the world

The empire - the NMLA have demonstrated a fundamental weakness in the empire attacking high level leadership and infiltrating intelligence networks very successfully, gaining support on a level rarely seen and with the empires reliance on slave labour it could prove to be a superpower wide rebellion given the right push

The Alliance - to survive as a superpower the alliance has taken to using aggressive territory expansion into thargoid occupied space as a means of generating revenue. Given the known history the thargoids seem like they are currently backed into a corner and ready for an all out war for survival (this is a big reach but not entely out of the realm of possibility)

While never shying away from the importance of private enterprise within the political structure of the federation itself we are starting to see the breakdown of the very core of democracy as it struggles against the powerful grip of near superpower corporate entities plus the orwellian transformation into a surveillance state which will naturally cause brakedown
