How were did Europe and the Americas communicate before the submarine cables were laid in the 50s?

I was talking to my grandma who said she was part of the submarine cable-laying effort in Venezuela (late 60s). I looked up those in the US and I found 1955 as a date. My mom says that there were calls that were made before then between continents, and my grandma says they were "aerial". I don't even know what that means, radio?

Could someone clarify what means of telecommunications existed before that time between the continents?
