A pair of interesting coins, each with an international history! Payment via PayPal F&F, add flat rate $7 for shipping in the US.
- 1903-B Straits Settlements Dollar, the more desirable year of a two-year type (1903-4) issued by Edward VII for use in the Straits Settlements (predominantly modern-day Malaysia). Crusty and original XF Details with a single well-struck chop in the center in the approximate shape of a '4'. One of the more difficult 20th century types to find with chopmarks, as the practice was in its twilight years, and the coin was not intended explicitly for circulation in China. The reverse design of this type is one of the most interesting of the British Empire trade pieces, in my opinion! SOLD.
- 1898-Mo Mexico Peso (1949 Restrike). In 1949, the Nationalist Government of China was in an unfortunate position; the Communist rebels that they had been fighting since the end of World War II had seized the upper hand in the Chinese Civil War, and they faced internal conflict as their armies were being paid in near-worthless paper currency. Across the Pacific, the United States posed a potential means of supporting the ideological battle: hard cash. The United States produced ~30m restrikes of the 1934 Junk Dollar, and later struck ~2m restrikes of the 1898-Mo Peso, and engaging the Mexico City mint to produce ~8m. While most of the Junk Dollars were delivered to the Nationalists via Hong Kong, the majority of the Peso restrikes came too late, as less than a quarter of the mintage was reported as delivered before the Kuomintang fled to Taiwan in late 1949, bringing many of these coins with them. Apparently, the entire San Francisco production run was melted, so all surviving examples originate from Mexico City. The restrikes are clearly differentiated from the original issues by the adjustment of the mintmark, as well as the bead count around the perimeter. UNC condition, with plenty of luster. No idea why such an interesting coin with geopolitical relevance isn't more appreciated! SOLD.
The Straits Settlements were established in 1826 by the British comprising Singapore, Penang and Malacca (plus some other random islands). They ended with the Japanese occupation in 1946.
What would life be like if the SS had existed till today, as an independent sovereign state?
Imagine! People could live, work and play freely between the three cities. Our population and domestic market would be significantly bigger. We might even be an even bigger economic powerhouse than today.
Of course, frictions with the Federated States of Malaya would probably have been much more pronounced...

Shipping is $4 tracked for up to 8 oz and at cost for any amount above within lower 48. For shipping to Alaska, Hawaii, APO, or US territories I will have to specifically determine the rate which will be at cost. I can ship anything less than $20 in value, less than 3 oz in weight, and not too bulky in a stamped envelope for $1.10, however there will be no tracking. I will ship outside the US, but the rate will have to be specifically determined. It looks like world wide shipping would start at $9 for Canada and $11 for all other countries if you want tracking. Due to USPS being a total shambles right now, I will not ship coins out of the country without tracking. Either way, once I give it to USPS, you are at their mercy. Shipping times may be delayed as I am only going to the post office twice a week with the state of affairs such as it is.
Payment
I accept Google Pay, Venmo, Zelle, Cashapp, and PPGS. I will not take PPFF as I do not wish to get my account suspended. If comments are not required, leave the comments section blank. If a comment is required (should only be Venmo), do not under any circumstances mention Cuba or Iran. Only comment with something really vague and not sale related. Buyer pays applicable fees on all payment methods. Note that the fees for Google Pay, Venmo, Zelle, and Cashapp are ZERO. Note that the fee for PPGS is +3% of order total +$0.30. I will no longer accept checks or money orders.
Other Notes
No trades at this time. I generally only ship on weekdays, so purchases on Friday through Sunday will ship out on Monday at the earliest. Additional pics available upon request for coins over $5. I donβt have the time to mess around taking more pictures of coins less than $5 in value. Please PM instead of using chats. I will answer if I see it, but I cannot guarantee that I will see if you post in a chat which may mean you miss out on a deal.
If you respond to your own message before I get a chance to respond myself, I will only see the first message. If you want to send messages stream of consciousness as you go through the sale, send them separately to ensure I get them all. Once we have a thread going after I can respond, we should be good. If you donβt do this, I wonβt see the subsequent messages which seems to annoy people even though I have no control over it.
Please no time wasters. I do not guarantee that I will answer PMs in the order received. I will answer them in w
... keep reading on reddit β‘Between 1530 and 1531 Charles V offered to the Fuggers all land in America south of Chincha, north of the Magellan Strait and west of the Tordesillas line, in exchange for his large outstanding debts with that banking family. The Fuggers didn't accept it and went for an extension of the silver mining monopoly in Spain instead.
One of the reasons why they didn't accept the offer, besides the astronomic cost of the whole enterprise, was because Charles didn't allow them to take German colonists to populate the lands. Southern German regions were dealing with lots of poverty due to the constant state of war they experienced by being on the border with the Swiss, the French and the Italian. So, Fuggers would have plenty of colonists around Augsburg to send there.
Here is the map of what Charles offered to the Fuggers. I highlighted the most strategic places to build cities and the areas with fertile land, or gold/silver/iron/coal abounding. A couple years later Spain took control of the Potosi mine, the largest silver mine in history, and that made the Spanish Empire rich.
So, what would have happened if the Fuggers, the richest banking family in Europe at the time, and some of the richest people to have ever lived in Earth, accepted to take that lease, and Charles authorized them to settle the land with German colonists (as he had authorized the Welser, the other German banking family of Augsburg, to do in Klein Venedig in 1528)?
By controlling Potosi they would surely make a huge profit, and by colonizing the land with German settlers, through Fuggers' idea of social-responsible business that generated, for instance, the Fuggerei, in Augsburg, in 1516, the first social-housing project for the needy, they would have a couple of successful settlements in the more fertile lands, and a couple of bustling trade and mining cities across their whole colony.
So, could we have had a successful German colony in South America? How would that special German colony (which would be established not under the monopoly of the crown, but with Fuggers' monopoly as per Charles proposal) transition during the Spanish colonial crisis and decadence in the 18th century? Would it be controlled by Prussia, Bavaria or one of the other German States? Would it be annexed by the British to protect it from French interests?
If that German-majority colony evolved to become a successful country and achieved independence (and didn't lose much
