Just about to take off from Vancouver, Washington to come visit your beautiful state to look for a house. Woohoo! Can't wait. This has been a year + in the making.
Hi everyone, Iβm from Italy and seven years ago I had the pleasure to spend several months in Wisconsin (Crawford County) as an high school exchange student. At first I was scared, having to move from a medium sized European city to an extremely tiny village, but I couldnβt be happier with what I experienced during my time there and I would like to share with you what I enjoyed the most about your state and what you should be proud of.
Wisconsinites are some of the most warm hearted people Iβve ever met, I immediately felt part of the small community and everyone was curious about me, always willing to include me and help me with anything, from basic cultural adjustments to major language problems and homesickness. I have so many wonderful memories of my host family reunions, of the different school and town events, where everyone simply acted like we have always been very close friends. As a pretty introverted person I have to admit that I almost never felt as much as relaxed and comfortable with people as I did during my time there.
Your landscapes are truly awesome. The soft hills in the Driftless Area reminded me of Tuscany, so perfectly smooth and decorated with a sophisticated mosaic of woods, farms, orchards and fields. The snow blanket during the winter made it even prettier on full moon nights, when everything was so clear that you didnβt need a flashlight to move around. And on dark nights I remember looking up at the sky and see an incredible amount of scattered tiny stars, that in most parts of Europe itβs something we can only dream of. Wildlife was everywhere, I remember how excited I was the first time I saw a deer, a bald eagle, a raccoon, the first time I heard coyotes, even the first time I experienced the smell of a skunk. Not that we donβt have wildlife in Italy but it just felt different. Also I still canβt believe Lake Michigan is a lake, it looks (and I think probably is) as wide as the Adriatic Sea, where I live on.
I am very glad I got to live in WI for even such a short amount of time and not a day goes by without thinking about some aspects of my life there that I am truly nostalgic about. You live in a beautiful state, please treat every part of it (people and environment) with the respect it deserves.
Some more random things I miss: gas prices, clothes prices, HS football games, cheese curds, Kwik Trip, Culverβs.
Some random things I donβt miss: the cold, tipping and Iβm sorry to say this but also some of your cheeses an
... keep reading on reddit β‘I've been to 2 weddings featuring a polka band, area events usually have polka at some point of the show, and my school had a polka band.
Edit: oh this has been wonderful! Such a mix of "It's alive and well over here!" and "What's a polka?". You've all given me so much more polka-like music to experience. Thank you!
