Hi to everyone! Today is Saint Lucy (Santa Lucia for me and the other 4 Italians who celebrate. Traditionally St. Lucy carrying her eyes in one hand brings gift or coal to kids. In Italy is celebrate only in part of the North East and in Sicily and Calabria (?). In Finland, Norway and Sweden is It still a thing or not?
I'm 22 and still recived some candies, not ashamed
The attention to detail found in Saints is phenomenal: Speaking of the Church's history research being so professional it's award winning, anyone into podcasts should check out The Saints podcast. It goes into a level of detail you just can't find anywhere else.
Today I want to mention one example from that podcast. You all know the story: Joseph and Martin translate 116 pages of the Book of Mormon. Martin wants to take them to reassure his wife. Something happens, the manuscript becomes lost, and next thing you know Lucy becomes the person "everyone loves to hate".
But here is a detail you won't find many other places: Lucy Harris had a hearing disability, and ASL was only starting to become a thing in New England in the 1800s. Thus in the early 1800s, there was not an established infrastructure to support translation. She could not hear what others were saying. She could not hear Joseph bear testimony. She could not hear the testimony of Emma that Joseph was so unschooled in religious matters that there is no way he could have pulled off such a translation unless it came from God.
We need to be more kind to people like Lucy: What if this was any of us? What if people came by and you could not hear their testimony. What if you lived in an age where, though your spouse has developed a way to communicate with you, you can't hear any of the very testimony that is so convincing. Now you see your farm is being mortgaged. I'm sure most of us would have had a very similar to what reaction Lucy did.
There is another reason to not be too hard on Lucy: the Lord prepared for this. I have heard Elder Holland say he can't imagine how we could be worse off for having the small plates instead. The Lord has a way of working things out. Let's always remember to be charitable to a past whose shoes we have never stepped it.
All saintsβ day is coming here in Germany, I am new here and I know that all shops will be closed at that day. So the question is, what can we do in that day? Or what does people normally do or go in this day? Any recommendation in Munich!
We just published chapter six of our Saints review/fact-check at www.ldsdiscussions.com/saints -- today's chapter focuses on Joseph getting the plates back, an introduction to Oliver Cowdery and his rod, muddying the use of his seer stone with the term "Urim and Thummim," and another character attack on Lucy Harris for questioning Joseph. Saints also sources Lucy Mack Smith 19 out of 33 citations, so you know Joseph is gonna look extra awesome in this chapter!
This chapter is interesting because they continue to pretend that the seer stone and Urim and Thummim are interchangeable even though our best sources for the translation show he only used the seer stone after losing the 116 pages, and they use Lucy Mack Smith constantly again to paint a perfect narrative of Joseph while turning Lucy Harris into the villain (19 out of 33 sources are Lucy Mack Smith). This chapter is semi-light because of the time spent on introducing Oliver, but it really works hard to muddy the water on the translation process while inoculating members about the seer stone.
Please check it out and if you like it, please come back daily as we will add a chapter each day. Also, if you have any sourced objections to the truth claims in Saints, please let us know so we can add as much helpful information as possible.
We don't want this to be super long so that those with questions will stick around and read it, but we also want to be thorough to really hit on each point where they are deflecting/hiding the truth. Any crowdsourced help is always appreciated! :)
Happy Second Saturday, everyone!
Hi everyone!
Join us at Saint Lucy after class next week for a drink to celebrate the end of the course. Itβll be nice to chat with you about all things JDM and maybe hear what youβre planning to do next year. π
Cheers,
Jason, Brooklyn & Ryan
Latter-day Saints hate binary questions.
Ask a "Yes' or "No" question and you'll see what I mean. LDS are kings of "Nuance" and absolutely hating binary qustions.
Try it. You'll like it.
Here is update on the situation in Sicily:https://youtu.be/rf3Nl-0Vn5g
Just wondering if anyone know if there's a website that does any type of side-by-side comparison of the original Lucy Mack Smith history against the rewritten one that Brigham Young ordered done? I've seen them for changes in the BoM, D&C, etc... but not on LMS' history.
Since Saints relies SO heavily on LMS' history I was wondering if any of the pivotal events cited are from changes or not...
And if anyone wants to check out our Saints fact-check review, we've been posting daily updates with each new chapter but you can find the first 7 chapters at www.ldsdiscussions.com/saints -- if you like it please spread the word to anyone it could help to hear the other side of the story that Saints "The Standard of Truth" declines to tell.
Thanks!
