A list of puns related to "Rhodes piano"
I had this theory and Geoff Barrow actually confirmed it when I asked him on Twitter. I wonder if I was the first person who noticed that (doubt it).
Iβm having a lot of trouble finding exactly what Iβm looking for and wanted to see if anyone had a recommendation. I need a desktop MIDI controller keyboard for writing music on my laptop, but want to be able to just walk over and play it without having to connect my laptop, boot it up, launch my DAW, etc.
I have limited space and only want a 49 or 61 key. I donβt want one of those cheap, bulky keyboards with built-in speakers, just sound I can output directly to external powered speakers AND a USB MIDI port.
It doesnβt seem that what Iβm looking for exists. Is there another way to achieve this for under $300?
So I bought a Roland FP-10 piano and a Behringer 3D FX2000 effects unit, and this is new ground for me, so expect some beginner mistakes here. Really, at the moment I just want to spice up the Rhodes sounds with some DSP - phaser, flanger, chorus, delay, etc.
I have a stereo 3.5mm to 6.25mm male-to-male lead to connect the Roland to the outside world. This is the one I bought.
If I connect the Roland piano straight to my Roland KC-350 amp using that cable, all is well.
However, if I introduce the FX2000 into the signal chain, something weird happens that has me scratching my head. Everything works fine if I use an acoustic piano sound on the Roland. But if I switch to the Rhodes sound ("Electric piano 1"), the sound becomes extremely quiet and I have to really push the volume controls to hear it. To the extent that I'm not willing to do that in case I forget and switch back to the acoustic piano and deafen the neighbourhood or damage speaker cones.
The cable I'm using to connect to the FX2000 to the KC-350 amp is a standard 6.25mm mono cable. (I suspect this might be the problem).
What on earth can be happening here? The FX2000 doesn't know or care what sound I select on the FP-10, so why would one sound be normal level and another be almost inaudible?
My thinking currently is in two areas: one, the fact that I'm not using balanced cables. RFI isn't really likely to be the issue here, but maybe the wiring of the signal path is affected somehow.
But what seems more likely to me is that I'm taking a stereo 6.25mm from the Behringer and using that as a mono input to the KC-350 amp. Perhaps I can get away with that for the acoustic piano sounds but not the Rhodes because of how they're generated in terms of the stereo spectrum? Like there's some kind of destructive interference between L and R on the Rhodes that's cancelling most of the sound?
How can I find out? If I have to buy another cable to connect the FX2000 to the KC-350, such as a stereo male to two mono males (the KC-350 has the usual "L/Mono" and "R" input jack sockets), where can I get these (they don't seem to be common), or should I be using something else?
I know I should really put the FX2000 into a mixer's send/return loop, but I don't have a mixer and I'm on a very restricted budget.
Thanks in advance for your help.
I've continued to add songs to a Spotify playlist I've been compiling for more than a year that features Brazilian songs with (Fender) Rhodes electric piano. I thought I would eventually run out of Brazilian Rhodes songs, but I keep finding more great tunes - in styles such as MPB, jazz, pop, funk, and electronic - and now there are more than 1,500 songs in the playlist that's become a labour of love. Please check out the playlist and let me know if you have any comments: https://open.spotify.com/playlist/0SA5cjKM1K3pR1jnW05nwu?si=b175990912774047

I'm mostly familiar with the Rhodes piano bass in a rock context (thanks to Ray Manzarek of the Doors) but I feel like it has the potential to be a funk monster with that nasty and crunchy sound it has... Are any of you aficionados aware of its use on funk records? The overwhelming majority of videos I can find are either Doors covers, or funk songs with a standard Rhodes piano.
I stumbled upon it once a while ago on Apple Music, but I canβt seem to remember the artist name or the album name. Iβm pretty sure that it was released by a duo.
^(Hey so so I heard down the great vine that its possible to emulate the Rhodes/ E piano from the Yamaha DX7 on the Korg minilogue XD (obviously I know it probably wont sound exactly the same) via an oscillator or something like that, was just wondering if anyone out there has done this and has a patch up for sale or has any tips on how it would possible. I have made other E piano and rhodes patches but nothing that sound close enough to that sound and its been bugging my soul.)
IΒ΄m looking for a (compact and budget friendly) "sound module" with good piano, rhodes, strings/cello and juno 106ish sounds. Is there a device, that covers all these sounds? I donΒ΄t want to use vst plugins or a tablet with touchscreen. But an all in one device would be awesome...
Thanks for your advice!
I've continued to add to this playlist that's obsessively focused on Brazilian songs with Rhodes electric piano, and now there are 1,000+ songs in genres such as MPB, jazz, and funk/soul by Elis Regina, Hermeto Pascoal, Maria BethΓ’nia, JoΓ£o Donato, and many other prominent and lesser-known artists. I will keep adding to the playlist, with tunes from 1968 to 2021, as I discover more tracks. Enjoy the music! https://open.spotify.com/playlist/0SA5cjKM1K3pR1jnW05nwu?si=120a658814194988
