The psychological impact of constantly losing chickens to red-tailed hawks
We have had a red-tailed hawk kill 6 hens and one rooster in the last few months. The hawk isn’t very big, maybe the size of a small cat, and we can’t shoot it because it’s endangered and I also suspect it’s my dead friend reincarnated. I am not going to lie, I have shot the air near the hawk to scare it away, and afterward I had a nightmare the hawk came to get me but instead of having 2 claws, it had 4.
I like having free-range chickens. We never fail at locking them in the coop at night. But we don’t have them fenced in.
My concern with fencing them in and netting over the fencing is that the run will be disgusting and they won’t have a ton of grass for them to eat. Are there any other solutions? How do you deal with hawks? I am on a couple of acres in the Blue Ridge Mountains and have space but a very low budget.
